this is unique little getaway. if you want something charming, this is a great place. it is a great launching point to see many ruins. and also a great place to head down to hang out at the beach. the zebra club is a great place to hang out if you want to go down to the beach.

We were tucked away at La Selva Mariposa for 2 wonderful days! Room was comfortable, with great attention to detail. As you look up from the master bedroom there are 2 glass skylights perfectly placed so light gently shines in. The Master Suite has a seperate living room, 3 sinks, refrigerator and plenty of space and room to relax! There are private pools and hammocks for relaxing and plenty of trails to explore!

Louie was very helpful in suggesting local activities that were awesome!
Fresh fruit and full breakfast were amazing!!

We travel to this region frequently and will stay no where else!!

You will not be disappointed when you choose to stay here! WOW!!

My wife and I spent 8 days here for our honeymoon, and loved it. We stayed in suite 4, which had its own building and private pool and air conditioning. La Selva Mariposa is definitely a great place to spend with your spouse / family. Moe and Lou have built a very natural, peaceful getaway that still has all the modern comforts. They are very friendly, caring hosts - if you have any troubles while you are there they do whatever they can to help out. The best meals you will eat are the ones they can prepare for you (by request). This place has a great ambiance and some of our most enjoyable days spent were the ones where we did not go out anywhere and just laid by the pools (bring at least a couple of books you like to read!). LSM has a big advantage over the beach resorts in my opinion - more private grounds with great jungle scenery (without any discomforts), no sand getting everywhere, no crowds or strangers nearby, it does have stable electricity, and for us it was nice to have American hosts since our Spanish skills were very rusty. We did not miss staying on the beach - we spent plenty of time on the beach and were glad to be able to come home to somewhere different.

Things to watch out for:
You will need a rental car if you stay here (we liked having a rental car in general). There will be a couple of bugs that will get into your room, and you need bug spray on when you leave the rooms - but that goes with everywhere near Tulum. The rooms are very clean, modern, and well furnished. There is wireless internet but it is not super reliable (we didn't need it). There is hot water for the shower but it isn't easy to control the exact temperature of the water. There are 3 very friendly dogs owned by the hosts, one that will paw you unless you pet her - Molly :-). A very good breakfast is served outdoors under a palapa in the morning, and if other guests of the B&B are eating at the same time you may get to enjoy their company (we really liked this). You can either buy groceries and cook your own dinner on the grill, or drive to a restaurant for dinners. This place is about a 15 minute drive inland from Tulum without much on the highway. If any of these things sound outlandish to you then maybe a bigger resort might be better. But for us, my wife kept grinning and thanking me so much for picking the perfect place for our honeymoon. Thanks Moe and Lou!

La Selva Mariposa was designed and built by the owners and hosts, Lou and Mari (aka Moe). They are originally from Colorado but thanks to their adventurous spirits, love of people, artistry, and excellent cooking, the traveler to the Riviera Maya can get out of the noise and hustle of the beach scene and relax in the luxury of this jungle paradise. My husband, his sister and her husband and I went and stayed 4 nights. If only it could have been longer! La Selva Mariposa isn't just a name either -- there are thousands of butterflies in this part Tulum, yellow and green ones fluttering about everywhere. Our room featured a king size comfy bed, an outdoor shower, and a swimming pool right outside our door. All the rooms feature local art, traditional stone work, and all the comforts of home. One room is air conditioned, but we found ourselves totally comfortable in our rooms with our fans and our palapa ceilings. The grounds are beautiful with walking trails that take you past mango, lime, papaya trees and pineapple bushes. "Scarecrows" dressed in old Banana Republic shirts greet you amusingly along the trails. You awake in the morning to birds singing and the waterfalls cascading and you never want to leave the property. La Selva Mariposa is located a couple of miles outside of downtown Tulum. We had no trouble using local taxis for transportation, but most people had their own cars. Mari and Lou can tell you the best beach clubs to hang out at, the best restaurants to try, and where to buy the Mayan clay that comes with your bathroom spa so you can give yourself daily facials while you swing in your hammock. Do read Mari's book about how they made this all happen. We will return again and again.

My husband and I stayed at La Selva Mariposa for three days of our honeymoon, and we had an excellent experience. We were nervous about traveling to Mexico amid all the bad media, but we were so happy we decided to go. We felt entirely safe and healthy during our whole trip (except for one mild case of turista my husband got in Isla Mujeres). When we arrived at La Selva Mariposa the rain was pouring, but both Moe and Lou were there with umbrellas to help us with our luggage. Their hospitality was indeed excellent throughout our stay. As others have already noted, the breakfasts were delicious and their recommendations were spot on. We had a great time visiting the Coba ruins even though it was raining, and Moe's recommendations for Tulum beach clubs and dinner at Cesiak in the S'ian Khan biosphere made our trip quite memorable. I would recommend renting a car in order to get around easily in this area. You will not be disappointed if you stay at La Selva Mariposa!

My husband and I stayed at La Selva Mariposa a week ago. This was our second trip to this magical hideaway in the jungle. As always, Moe and Lou were the consumate hosts, feeding us wonderful breakfasts and a wealth of knowledge about the area. There is no need to worry about travel in this area. We have been to Tulum many times and the atomosphere is as peaceful as ever. Please don't allow the hysteria that seems to be pervading the media to stop you from enjoying this idyllic hideaway.
Not only will you be missing the sunshine, the song of the birds and the incredible beaches, but a chance to see a true Mayan community close to La Selva Mariposa.

After five nights at one of the resorts on the beach in Tulum, my husband and I spent two nights in room #2 of La Selva Mariposa as part of our honeymoon. It was, by far, one of the most thoughtfully designed and well-run b&b's we've been to (and we live in New England....the land of b&b's!). The hosts are gracious, the meals are bountiful and tasty, the rooms are delightfully designed and well-kept, and oh, the grounds! It is truly a hidden paradise, with meandering paths, lush jungle greenery and cool pools with waterfalls that Lou, one of the two owners, carved right out of the resident coral and limestone.

It's a 15 minute ride to the beaches of Tulum, a 10 minute ride to downtown Tulum (where you can find ATMs and restaurants), and a 20 minute ride to the ruins of Coba. Great location. Can't wait to return or send friends...
