“Honeymoon”
Reviewed 3 April 2013

I have been meaning to write this review for a very long time. My wife and I went to Tulum in the spring of 2011 for our honeymoon. We loved staying at Teetotum. The staff was so friendly and gave us plenty of advice on things to do and see in the area. We enjoyed the fact that we were close to the town but could also get to the beach easily. Our room was clean, comfortable and the water for the shower was never cold! There are only four rooms here so it was quiet and very peaceful, we had the whole place to ourselves for most of our stay. We found ourselves hanging out at the hotel more then we planned just because we enjoyed the atmosphere, food and company at Teetotum so much. Thank you Richard and staff!! We will definitely be back, can't wait!

sean and steph hello!
thank you for your kind review of our hotel. it was a pleasure to have met you and especially cool to have been in the bar when you casually discovered your old grade school chum drinking beside you in the bar. since we have become Facebook friends it gives us great pleasure to see all the cool stuff you do with harleys and your killer chevy wagon.
so have your baby, get back into the swing of things and pay us another visit
we have just purchased an ewer, more fancy espresso machine, so you wife has a job teaching us all her tricks when you guys return!
we love you!

Teetotum was an inviting, relaxed place that had a lot of heart! (Something that we didn't get in other locations.) We loved the staff who where so helpful, kind and gracious w our lack of spanish. The food was amazing. Really the best food we had while in Mexico. We lived on Banana french toast and delicious greek salads and homemade bread! The rooms where just as nice as they looked online and Richard was nice enough to bring a small bed even for my son. They offered us lots of friendly advice when we needed it too. We played chess and made some art in the lovely cafe and courtyard and even had a chance to catch up online. I really appreciated the overall vibe of Teetotum. It was an oasis!

hola friend,
thank you so much for your kind review. we don't often have the opportunity to have young people stay with us and your son was a stone groove. we really appreciated that he enjoyed dali, our pooch and the fat cats, too.
so when you have time, please return to magical tulum and visit with us again as we love returning guests- it's like having a friend come visit.
stay well and we hope to see you soon in safe and sunny tulum.
we love you!

Staff was very nice! Ana was a doll, and Dali was so sweet! Nice spacious rooms, rooftop lounge, great food and drinks at the hotel (American prices), and a hammock and other comfy seats throughout the hotel. It's all open, you can always feel a breeze from outside! Loved that. They have bikes too, so you can totally ride to town. We actually rode a few miles to a cenote :)

The only negative thing was that on our 2nd night (we stayed 3 nights), the electricity went out due to strong winds (it was August). Without electricity it is HOT, even at 12 am. There was not any staff on grounds to contact and let them know this had happened... not one person! We didn't get electricity back til about 10 or 11 the next morning. The owner did not try to compensate us, or didn't really seem to be apologetic. But he is a super sweet man, and I know I am a very sensitive person! Overall I would definitely stay again!

hola amigos,
thank you for your positive review of our humble hotel. we really appreciate it when our guests take the time to review us, especially when its so kind.
may we take the time to apologize about the loss of power for one of the nights you were staying with us. one of the benefits, usually, of being so near town is that we are on the "grid" and our electricity is provided (expensively, but provided, nevertheless) by the municipality. however, that being said, at times, particularly in the deepest part of the summer, brown outs can occur and all we can do is wait it out and hope that the service returns quickly. please forgive for not explaining that to you in a more satisfying manner.
hopefully you will return to magical tulum and stay with us again. we hope so!
we love you!

Richard was very helpful and responsive with emails. After our arrival, he accommodated our requests very well: moved the beds to a second-floor room, and lowered the bike seats for us. He provided free bottled water to guests in the fridge. I like the room decor, and his friendly dog Dalia (right?). Location was not in walking distance to beach, but in biking distance. Also, it is close to Tulum downtown, and you may bike to the Tulum ruins if you like. I just wish the shower water could be stronger. Sometimes I still hear animals later at night, but this is not a big problem for me.

After returning from a week-long stay at the Teetotum in Tulum, I can very easily and happily give it five stars! It was my first visit to Tulum, but I knew instantly that this is the place I will continue to stay at when I return.

Everything at the Teetotum is comfy and inviting - including the airy cafe/restaurant/bar, rooftop lounge, open areas and especially the room. It was like being home, if home were paradise. We had a first floor room which was serene and super clean! The bed was wonderful and the towels were plush. There's a good amount of A/C if you desire it and the water was hot and plentiful. They have nice bath amenities and there's always cold bottled water in the fridge. The way that the place flows from the front gate back to the rooms is really lovely. It is such a great place to relax and get into the peaceful vibe of Tulum. Or if you need an internet fix, there's free Wi-Fi to be had.

We ended up having all of our breakfasts (which included heavenly fresh squeezed OJ along with delicious coffee!) and almost all of our other meals at the Teetotum as well. It's a great place to kick back, enjoy a drink and converse with fellow travelers. The atmosphere is very laid back and casual, as a beach vacation should be in my opinion. The location could not be more ideal. It is an easy walk into town, or a bike ride/walk to the beach. Perfect!

Most important of all, the place truly is filled with kindness. Richard and the entire staff are all incredibly nice and welcoming, as were Dali and the kitties. It's so nice to connect with people who make you feel at home in a foreign land. You will be so thankful that you chose the Teetotum! Do not hesitate to book a room at this treasure and enjoy every minute of it.

hola kim,
wow!! thank you so much for your extremely positive review. sometimes the place and our guest just click immediately and when it happens, its just a joy to behold. obviously, we try to please our guests the best we can and our design and sense of hospitality can be appreciated or not. our business model is super simple. be nice, be caring, really caring and try to do whatever you can to make the guest feel happy and welcome. we all just need to remember what we want and hope for on our own holiday. luckily, the perfect storm of appreciation occasionally occurs and it happened in our case with you!
so come back, because we really love you!
hope to see you within the year! fail sends friendly woofs of joy!

My husband and I stayed here for a week and we loved it. Teetotum Hotel is ideally located on the road to the beach making it easy to explore both worlds. We made good use of the bikes, falling into a pattern of riding them to the beach every morning, cruising around that area until about happy hour then heading back to Teetotum to chill and think about dinner. The food at Teetotum is great, we ate dinner there the first night and just about every day for breakfast. The huevos rancheros are awesome and so is the french toast. We didn't eat at Teetotum every night just because there are so many awesome restaurants to try in the pueblo. I'm so glad we asked Richard for some insight in the restaurant department because every one of his suggestions were spot on and we might not have found them on our own. Thank you Richard!

The atmosphere at Teetotum is so relaxed which was perfect for us. It's obvious that everyone working there genuinely loves what they do, which made us feel right at home. Nothing here is forced; from the decor, to the food, to the music they play, everything just falls together in the nicest possible way.

Our room was a good size, the bed very comfortable, the a/c worked great -- we didn't use it all the time though because at night it cools down enough so it isn't really necessary. Also it was well cleaned every single day and they left us bottles of water and a couple of cokes each day. A nice touch! We were very happy with the cleanliness, which was more than we're used to when traveling to Central and South America.

Overall if you are looking for a place to stay and can't decide between the pueblo and the beach, this is the spot. It's quiet at night and if you enjoy bike riding a car won't be necessary and you will have easy access to both locations. Also you will get great advice from Richard or any of the staff on what to do, where to eat, etc. On our last morning we were headed to Playa Del Carmen and Richard suggested a noodle bar there that was terrific! The man knows what is up! Thanks everyone, we hope to come back next year with friends :) Jon sends Dali a high five.
