“Thee BEST place to stay in Tulum!!!”
Reviewed 20 July 2009

If you are looking for a friendly, laid back place to stay while vacationing in Tulum, then the Teetotum Hotel is for you!

Let me count the ways:
1. Hospitality - Unlike staying at a resort where you are just another guest, at Teetotum its almost like you are family! There are only 4 rooms and everyone working there from the owner to the employees treat you like one of their friends. Richard the owner couldn't be more friendly and was always more than willing to offer up suggestions on places to go and see and great at telling stories. After a few days it became really easy to just lounge around and chit chat over some drinks.

2. Location, location, location - I can't emphasize this enough. If you are looking for a trip mixing time relaxing on the beach, to visiting town, to checking out ruins then there is no other place to stay than Teetotum! It is situated between the beach and town and both are simple to get to. Another great thing that the hotel offers is free bike usage. My wife and I took advantage of this almost the entire time we were there. On bike, the beach is just about 2 miles straight down the road and it makes for a quick 15 minute ride. We would get to the beach, lock the bikes and enjoy the ocean and sun, plus we were able to check out several different beach locations this way. In addition, the town of Tulum is literally right around the corner. Within town are some great local restaurants (Don Cafeto & the fantastic gelato place come to mind) and plenty of shops for anyone wishing to pick up some souvenirs. Another great advantage to Teetotum is its location to the Supermarket. Just a block away is a large local supermarket which came in super handy for stocking up on bottled water and snacks for an inexpensive price. Also, up the block from the hotel is a car rental place. We didn't initially rent a car, but when we got there we decided we wanted to venture out and the car rental place nearby made it really easy (approx $37 a day for a small car). This was great because not too far from Tulum are the ruins of Coba (about 30 min away) and Chichen Itza (about 2 hrs). If you are up for the drive it is well worth it! Both are easy to get to and on Richard's suggestion on the way to Chichen Itza we stopped in a old colonial town called Vallidolid for a terrific lunch at a place called Hotel El Meson del Marques (Thanks, Richard!)...In addition there are the Ruins right in Tulum which are super close and plenty of cenotes (underwater caves) to check out. We spent a day at Hidden Worlds and snorkeled in the cenotes as well as some cool zip lining and repelling down into the caves! So like I said, Teetoum is a great jumping off point for all activities in the area.

3. The Hotel Itself - Like I mentioned earlier the hotel is made up only 4 large rooms, with a king sized bed, iPod docking station, mini fridge (great for chilling bottled water from the supermarket. And beer of course!) and a safe. The rooms are simple and nice and offer what I consider an important feature: The air conditioner! Comes in handy on those hot hot days at the beach and its one thing the cabanas and hotels on the beaches don't offer and its really nice to have. The hotel has a great lounge area with a hammock and dipping pool which was nice just to relax in and have a drink. Food was delicious (especially the french toast stuffed with carmelized bananas with sweet farmer's cheese!) and the chef was a nice gal from the States. (Hey V!)
Another fun feature of the hotel is movie night on Fri, Sat, and Sun. After a long active day it was fun to have the option to just relax on the rooftop under the stars and catch a flick. (Even if that flick was Twilight!). The best part about Teetotum was that it really felt more like you were staying over a friend's house than some big resort. We got to meet new people, make new friends and have a great adventure in Tulum and we couldn't have done it without Teetotum Hotel!

Thanks!

I surprised my husband with a trip to Tulum to celebrate our anniversary...after lots of research (since we had not been to Tulum before), I decided on Teetotum, and we both could not have been happier. Tulum itself is a laid-back, no frills kind of place...so if you are looking for shi-shi 5-star resorts and restaurants, go elsewhere, but if you are looking for some of the most beautiful beaches, friendly people, great food, go to Tulum, and stay at Teetotum. The hotel is an intimate 4-room place that feels almost like an upscale/larger b&b, but with extremely friendly service, awesome food and a funky, but relaxed vibe. From the first email exchange I had with Richard to the moment we left, we had nothing but great service...you are made to feel like they are sharing their home with you. Richard was extremely helpful through booking, to answering the multiple questions I had, to welcoming us by name as soon as we arrived. The hotel is located on the road to the beach and right by town, so it was a perfect location for us. It gave us the flexibility to wake up and head wherever we wanted to each day. The decor in the room is done in a minimalist way, but we like that, and have a comfy bed, iPod docking station, safe, mini-fridge, and separate sink/shower area. I cannot say enough good things about Teetotum. While my husband and I travel a lot and usually do not go to the same place more than once, we definitely plan to come back to Tulum and stay at Teetotum. The restaurant had great food (and we are pretty particular when it comes to dining)...be sure to try their huevos rancheros and banana stuffed french toast for breakfast. Their prices are more than fair for both the accommodations and food/drinks. The music selection at Teetotum was perfect – always chill. They will also set up in-room spa services. Teetotum set up a massage, and although I cannot remember her name, the masseuse was very skilled, professional and friendly. Oh, and they have AC, which is a rare find in Tulum and a nice thing to have when you get back from the beach and need to relax for a while in your room.

Teetotum, thanks for making our trip that much more memorable! We cannot say enough good things about Teetotum and Tulum...wish we were still there!

My wife and I and another couple stayed at the Teetotum hotel for three nights this June. The hotel is located about 5 minutes by car from the beach. After the staff explained to us that all of the beach hotels allow day access, it was very easy to spend as much time as you like at the beach but return to air conditioning and electricity in the evening. A special treat was watching recent and classic movies at night while dining on the roof. It’s a short walk to the many restaurants on the main drag in Tulum. The accommodations were spacious – great for drying off snorkeling and fishing gear after a day on the water – and there was even an Ipod dock in the room. The beds were great. The young staff were extremely gracious and always cheerful and did a great job answering all of our questions. The place seems oriented towards younger travelers but they did a great job making a group of 50-60 year olds feel very welcome. The food was great at the restaurant – especially the baked goods (the chocolate cake and cupcakes were exceptional). A tasty and filling continental breakfast is included with the room. We were driving a rental car around the Yucatan and the hotel’s location just off Hwy 307 made it easy to find. There was parking for 3-4 vehicles.

This is a hidden gem just off of interstate 307 on the road to Coba whick is just minutes from the beatiful beaches of Tulum and the Mayan Ruins of the same name. In total 90 minutes from the Cancun Airport and 45 minutes from Playa Del Carmen.

Here are my top ten reasons for staying at this small trendy boutique hotel.

09. Yoga and spa therapies available
08. Movie nights on the roof top lounge
07. Free wifi and ipod docking stations in your room
06. Swimming pool
05. King size beds

03. Great food and margaritas
02. Great price and friendly staff

My husband and I just returned from Mexico and Belize. Teetotum and Tulum was our first stop! It is a great location between the beach and town. We did not rent a car, but easily walked to town for dinner and shopping every night. It is also on the road to the beach so for a few dollars or about 30 pesos you can take a taxi to the most beautiful beaches. Teetotum itself is a small boutique hotel with great service......everyone is friendly and helpful. It has great spaces to hang out in and relax with a cold drink and your friends- new ones or old! The plunge pool is great to cool off and relax in and the food is awesome! We had a great breakfast everyday. We had the best night of the whole vacation watching a movie on the roof! In fact we are inspired to create our own outdoor movie area! Richard is great and gave us lots of information on the area. We also left behind my husband's dive log (oops!) and he recognized the value and returned it to us. This is a great place for couples or singles to go and explore the area! It is a good location to see more than just the beach.......the town is wonderful. Go to Tulum and stay at Teetotum. You will meet great people and have time to relax!

My husband and I visited Teetotum Hotel this past May during the swine flu scare craziness and loved it! By the way, there is NO swine flu in Quintana Roo, you must go there NOW! There are great deals to be had, and the lovely people of Tulum need your business! We met Teresa, the Irish lady who helps run the place and had a lovely few beers talking to her. The food, excellent. The location PERFECT; you get the best of both worlds as it is located right between the pueblo and the beach. They also rent bicycles, so you can explore the area on your own. I really enjoyed that they show very interesting, avant garde movies in the little courtyard there. It's a truly hip place, without trying to be. Minimalist, kind, sweet; all of that. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to visit Tulum aka the most wonderful place in the world...

Its simple chic. Very comfortable, super clean rooms with king size beds and ac. The staff was friendly and the locals that hang out there gave us some great tips on what to do while we were there.

Unfortunately the ruins were closed because of the flu scare. We decided to go down to Tulum when we heard about all the people canceling their trips. This was a great time actually to be there. We got a great rate at Teetotum which was fantastic!

This was my second visit to Tulum and my husband's first. He's already said that it won't be his last. And we'll be back at Teetotum.

I'm happy to report that neither me or my husband got any illness while there.
