This hotel, right on the water - with the jungle behind - is a hidden gem! I loved my time here! The staff is outstanding. They were so accommodating to our group, whether we had dietary considerations, or needed to use the bar area for our small group working during our yoga training. They were attentive, pleasant, and kind!
The rooms are great, too. You are in a jungle cabana, so expect to make friends with tiny lizards, crabs, and mosquitoes at some point. The rooms were clean and beautifully decorated.
While I did not get to sleep in the rooms here (they are full, so I stayed next door), I heard from my students that sleep was comfortable on the beds, with the sounds of the water at the shore to lull you to sleep.
And the food! La Luna has a restaurant, Las Estrellas, that is delightful!! Jacob is your cook, and he is so sincere in his desire to fix a fantastic meal. And he never disappointed! He was willing to cook items not on the menu (note: I visited during the "off season"), and even prepared a decadent French inspired meal one night for dinner.
You will love it at La Luna.

A relaxed casual ambience exist's here enticing one to never want to leave during your entire stay. However La Luna makes a great base to enjoy the nearby sights and activities.. Cars are not neccessary, cabs are readily available. The entire staff greet you like an old friend, yet your privacy is always respected. The grounds are clean, well groomed and feel secure. The beach in front of La Luna is the best strand of sand for a mile in each direction. Inn keeper Jacob Willemsen uses a confident guiding hand to ensure that the excellent efficient service is transparent to all guest's. Jacob is also the Chef and oversee's the excellent on sight restaurant Las Estrellas (see seperate review) We loved Cabanas La Luna and already have our reservations made for next year.

My wife and i just got home from la luna, and have already booked our next trip back. it is absolutely perfect. from the minute you get there, everyone is friendly, accomodating, and puts you right at ease. whatever you need, they are there to help. Reuben greeted us, helped us get settled, and was always right there when you needed him. jacob, the manager, has an easy way about him that makes you feel completely comfortable. Kuamy is always happy, and is just the man.
we stayed in robinson crusoe, which is the smallest cabana, but its perfect for 2 and very cozy. having breakfast on your front deck as the sun rises over the caribbean is a perfect way to start each day. the french toast is amazing, and the coffee strong, to go with fresh squeezed orange juice - you dont remember how good this is until you taste it!!
the restaurant on site has great food, strong drinks, and a perfect, relaxing atmosphere.. you can sit on the deck, look out over the ocean, and wonder why you dont just move to tulum!
we spent most of our time relaxing on the beach out front, and every now and then being lured in by the brilliant turqoise ocean. tulum's beach is perfect for walking, day or night, and there are plenty of places to stop in to eat and have some drinks. in the afternoon, you have to try casa violetta's wood oven pizza - it is simply the best on earth! (make sure you get there before 4pm). its about a mile south of la luna.
at night, we spent a lot of time about a mile north on the beach at zamas and luna maya listening to live music. they always have a band playing, and if you can catch lou and the blues, you are in for a treat! big willy the waiter at zamas is the best waiter around, and always good for entertainment!
there is plenty to do in tulum if you are into adventure. the ruins are cool, and we spent some time there on our last trip. this trip, we pretty much just wanted to relax, and cabanas la luna is absolutely the perfect place for this. we liked having the option of walking to see some live music or go for dinner up and down the beach, but in the end, it was always best to come home to la luna.
the beach is clean, and the area felt completely safe. there are friendly dogs running around on the beach, which makes you feel right at home. the people at la luna, and mostly everyone we met, were fantastic - friendly, funny, and helpful. Our rental car battery died, and Kuamy brought some jumper cables from home and helped me get it running again. its like having a buddy to help you out.
In the end, if you are looking for a nice, relaxing, laid back vacation in paradise, this is your place!!
We are heading back at the end of this year, and simply cant wait!
*a couple notes:
1. we rented a car. this was pretty great, so we could easily run to the supermarket and get food, beers, or whatever you want. we walked to most of the places on the beach, but to drive into town it was good to have a little car. the driving was simple enough, as there is pretty much 1 straight road from cancun airport to tulum. the rental car is cheap, but our rental insurance was like $15/day, and they dont mention that until you get there..
2. things close down fairly early, but there is still plenty of fun to be found at night.
3. if you are a stiff, high-maintenance person, tulum might not be the place for you. this isnt cancun, or an all-inclusive resort. i packed a couple pairs of shorts, flip flops, and a 6-pack of white t-shirts, and that was all i needed.
4. there is a HSBC bank in town with an ATM and it gives you the option of american or mexican money. its easier to pay for things with pesos if you can, just so you dont have to do all that math while your brain is trying to shut down. take out some mexican currency, and you will be fine. its like $3 to take out money, so no big deal.
5. book your trip to la luna, and start counting down the days!!!

Having just returned from 6 days at La Luna, I'm here to report it is 100% as magical as the reviews say it is. While we'd hoped to stay in a beachfront cabana, only the Jungle Penthouse was available and it ended up being perfect for my husband, me and our two teenage kids. It was spacious, private and the sunset views never ceased to amaze us. We loved waking up to a breakfast of great coffee and fresh fruit served on a deck overlooking the Caribbean and then reading on the beach beds. The nights we ate at Las Estrellas, La Luna's restaurant, were like being in an intimate club with cool music, wonderful Mexican/Moroccan food and fun people to talk to. Jakob, the property's friendly manager/chef is really gifted at making everyone feel welcome and he was also a great source of info about local restaurants. A shout out also to Rueben who took great care of us every day. I can't imagine there is a better experience to be had in Tulum.

We've just recently returned from a week stay at Cabanas La Luna. Our group rented out the whole property for my daughters wedding and we could not of asked for a better location. Our week stay went by far too fast. Staff took care of all our needs, we did not need to worry or do a thing on the wedding day. The whole property was stunning, and the beach was wide, the sand as soft as butter. We stayed in Villa Zanzibar, which is only a very short walk to the beach. You could still hear the surf at night from the villa, even though it is set back from the water. The rooms were comfortable, the little kitchen adequate, and the pool was a beautiful spot to sit and relax. All the guests were happy with their cabanas and many are planning a return trip. This is a very intimate resort and a wonderful setting for a small wedding, with staff taking very good care of all the details, something that could not of been duplicated at an all-inclusive resort.

We spent just over a week at La Luna with our children and their families. We stayed in the Villa Zanzibar, so comfortable, with a kitchen and living room, outdoors but with a thatched roof, and it's own pool. Housekeeping was impeccable. Spent our time walking the beach, dipping in and out of the wonderfully warm waters and waves while the younger generation surfed with boogie boards.

Service was warm, friendly and efficient.

Loved the restaurant where food was fresh and elegant without being fussy. In fact, the food was allowed to speak for itself as should be the case - seafood, fruit and vegetables simply and beautifully presented by the chef/manager Jacob and his excellent staff.
We ate out in a couple of different restaurants along the beach, but always came back to Las Estrellas, the La Luna restaurant which we enjoyed more than any other. Not just the food, but the tropical cocktails such as pina colada and margarita were the best we had anywhere on our trip; excellent selection of beer as well.

This is a small oasis of pure delight and we will certainly return to enjoy another family holiday which was such a success.

My friend and I spent 7 nights here and we loved it. The staff was amazing...so friendly and accommodating and especially good at making tasty beverages! Our room was nice and private. We loved our view and being able to listen to the waves all night long. Breakfast was light and perfect. Our other meals were good too. The cabanas seem more private than other hotels but have incredible beach access. You barely heard anyone else! You can also easily walk to the other hotels/restaurants in the area or catch a cab. The staff was really helpful when it came to planning our excursions too. Our only complaint was the loud guard dogs. They frequently woke us up in the middle of the night with their barking and/or whimpering. However, if given the choice I wouldn't let this deter us from coming back!
