“Absolutely unbelievable... Incredible place to get away”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2010

We really wanted to get away to a unique place that was a true change from the all-inclusive and we struck gold with this place. Jacob, the manager, was great from the start. He also has created an excellent menu in the La Estrella restaurant, which was far beyond our expectations. Every meal we had was excellent. The staff was also very good. They treated us like VIPs the whole time we were there. Also, the beach beds were great as well as breakfast on our patio each morning. They also helped us plan some different day activities which also were great parts of our trip.
The guacamole, nachos, and steak arragherra were all incredible at the restaurant.
We also enjoyed the privacy. There are only 8 cabanas, which even with a near full occupancy, you could be as private as you want. You could visit with other guests, or take your meals at your room.
Great place to stay. Great place for a romantic couple getaway with a great staff to make your trip fantastic.

We spent 8 days at La Luna for our honeymoon and had the vacation of a life time. There are a lot of cabanas by the ocean but La Luna certainly stands out above the rest for its service, decor, value, and amenities. In fact after we came back I spoke to a lot of my friends who have been to Tulum and they unanimously agreed after seeing our pictures that La Luna is where they would stay next time.

The staff are a huge reason this place is so special. Jabob the manager and head chef took such great care of us and really made us feel like part of the La Luna family if even for a short time. Rueben did a fantastic job on telling us what activities to do and Kwame's service and positive attitude are second to none. Also a big thanks to Gonzalo and to Jose for making the BEST drinks.

Breakfast was served every morning - coffee, toast and fresh fruit and OJ - right on our porch overlooking the ocean. It was so nice to have the new restaurant for lunch - we had the nachos, and ceviche with ginger almost every day. Amazing. And their dinner is super romantic with fresh fantastic ingredients.

The cabanas are colorful with everything you could ask for, all the fresh water you need, a bug net, a big porch with a table and hammock for evening reading and afternoon naps, and a hot shower and sink (the water is slightly salienated, it comes from underground cenotes) but they do have an outdoor fresh shower that is refreshing also. We stayed in Robinson Crusoe which was perfect for two people with shelves and had enough room to put our big suitcases on the floor easily. We also got the honeymoon basket upon arrival with champagne. A real treat. The beach is like nothing you have ever seen, white sand and aqua marine water. La Luna provides big umbrellas and comfortable reclining beach chairs. The lay out of the cabanas are far enough apart to give you some privacy but definitely create a close atmosphere and we made many good friends. In fact we spent a lot of time at the jungle suite with friends we made from Europe. A great suite and great people! And went salsa dancing at La Zebra on Sunday (they give you lessons) with some new friends who were staying at Christopher Columbus. We also took a lot night time strolls on the beach. So many stars! You can even see the milky way. And we saw baby turtles being born on the beach on many nights, they are endangered and we helped them into the ocean. Really special.

We recommend renting a car as it made it very easy to see all of the sites but having said that cabs are fairly inexpensive and plentiful. Our best trip was to the Tulum Ruins and then a guided snorkel tour of the reef about 10 minutes into the ocean. So many fish!

For other restaurants we stayed mostly on the hotel trip and besides many meals at La Luna we also highly recommend Posada Margharita - amazing fresh pasta!

We are already trying to figure out when we can go back and bring some of our couple friends. If you are looking for fun, relaxation, escape, and a staff that will make you feel like family this is the place to stay. And if you know you are going to Tulum and want the experience of staying on the beach look no further than Cabanas La Luna.

We just came back from three night in La Luna. We stayed in the Jungle Penthouse and loved it! Cannot say enough about how amazing the location was. I will never forget how I felt sitting on the patio having breakfast with the most amazing scenery that I have seen in a long, long time! All the units are unique and the layouts are superb with a balance of function and magic. Wonderful design is not uncommon, but it's rare when it makes you actually FEEL better. There is one to cater to every possible need (ie./ couples, families, larger groups etc) The jungle penthouse allowed for lying in bed and watching a sunset over the jungle tops (and solar panels, love the ecochic!) The only downside is you can't always choose your fellow guests and their nocturnal habits did not mirror ours, no fault of La Luna though! We felt really welcome and cared for, thank you Jacob, Ruben and all the other wonderful staff! We loved it!

La luna, where to start?.............

I actually didn't want to write this review as I would love to keep la luna a secret from preying tourists and keep it all for myself, but that wouldn't be fair to the owners & staff who want to keep business booming.

La luna is what I imagine Heaven to look like. After a bit of a nightmare journey from the UK, via NY (due to the ash cloud) we were tired and feeling grubby. Upon arrival at La luna, everything was instantly forgotten. This is seriously the most beautiful place I have ever seen!

Driving along the Beach road in Tulum, I knew we had picked the perfect place for our holiday. Everything was so quaint and almost magical. This is the sort of place you see in brochures- and don't think actually exists.

We had ordered the honeymoon package for our arrival (although not on honeymoon) and the champagne and selection of the most delicious fruits added that perfect sparkle to our arrival.

We stayed in Robinson Crusoe cabana, and it exceeded our expectations. It actually felt larger than it looks in the pictures. I had been a little worried about security but the door has a secure lock (with key) and there is no open mesh. Besides, there was a lovely security guard who patrolled the grounds every night. We experience no problems with safety or security at all. It seems there is very little crime in Tulum at all. We were leaving valuables lying on the beach no problem and even left our cabana open alot of the time. As the beach is so private and quiet, strangers would quickly be noticed anyway. There is also a very secure safe, nailed to the floor under the bed, which is free off charge.

The Staff at La luna are so friendly and helpful- yet not over-attentive when you want privacy. Once they notice you are up, they bring over complimentary breakfast every morning of fresh fruit juice, coffee and toast/ or fresh fruit. There is also a menu from which you can order hot breakfast. These were deliocious, but very filling and very reasonable in price.

The restaurant food, prepared by their dutch chef is of 5 star quality. We were happy to just let him surprise us each night- I'm a slightly fussy eater, but loved everything he prepared. The nopal (cactus) enchilada, goats cheese salad & almond tart were our personal favourites. (n.b. mezzanine is also a great restaurant to try- thai mexican fusion). To be honest, all the food we ate in Tulum was wonderful- the standards are very high in general. Although we did suffer a little after eating from the taco shack at the side of the road (probably best avoided unless you have a cast iron stomach). We did find that in general we suffered with bad tummys from the food in mexico. Upon our return I looked this up and found out that it is common in mexico (like delhi belly). I think there are antibiotics or something you can take before you go to strengthen your stomach. All fresh, unpeeled, washed food and seafood is affected unfortunately. I wouldn't let it put you off though. We still ate the food as it was so delicious and wouldn't hesitate to go back- just take the necessary precautions before hand.

Our cabana, although actually the cheapest had the perfect spot in the grounds. We felt we had the best view and were perfectly located, right next to reception and the restaurant, directly on the beach- but not affected by noise or people walking past. Having said this, the complex is very small and you would have no problems being based in any of the accomodations.

Having walked right the way along the beach, and had a good look at all the various other accomodations- I would not stay anywhere other than la luna! Whilst they were all lovely, la luna was by far the best- and we felt very smug! There was a guy from New Zealand who spent a couple of days in the neighbouring cabana, but had to move on after as there was no more availability and he kept telling us how gutted he was that he was not still at la luna.

Everything about la luna was perfectly magical. We never even noticed the stars on the beach to begin with- but you can see the entire milky way! I have never seen a sky like it! It was like something from a film.

We did get 3 days of a tropical storm whilst we were there, which was apparently very unusual for the time of year. The first day was great fun, to cosy up inside a bar and watch the rain bouncing off the floor and we used the time to go for a massage at Ana y Jose (highly recommended). We also used a rainy day to visit the coba ruins & it's local cenotes (the best cenotes you can visit- they are inside underground caves and there are no mosquitos like you get at grande cenote (whilst also worth a visit)). We were definately better off using a wet day for visiting coba as it was a lot cooler than it would have been. We were thrilled though, to see the sun return for our last few days.

The last few days had to be the most magical overall; we hired the bikes from la luna (only $5 a day) and cycled up to the Tulum ruins which was a great way to do it, stopping off at a couple of beach bars along the way. We of course returned for another massage and drank from a coconut we found on the beach (guame kindly cut it open and made us a rum cocktail inside).

The staff there are great- ask Ruben for local advice on things to do. Guame, our waiter was so friendly and keen for a chat whenever we wanted. Everyone was great!

Finally, on our last night- I turned to my partner and said the only thing I feel is missing from our perfect holiday is that we didn't get to see a sea turtle. Sure enough, at about 2 in the morning the security card knocked on our door saying "Tortuga, tortuga amigos" (we had previously asked him to wake us if he saw any turtles). We rushed to the beach in our pyjamas. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. She was magnificent and bigger even than I had expected. We all watched as she layed her eyes and made the journey back to the sea. We were transfixed for well over an hour. What an amazing end to the best holiday I've ever experienced!!

I would love to return to la luna someday- it truly is a oncein a lifetime experience not to be missed!

We stayed in christopher columbus..which has an awesome view. the beach is so good you dont need a pool. The start of our week was perfect, the ocean was super clear and clean and calm. you could see everything, down to the perfect white sand. lots of sunshine and light breezes. Night time was hot, but not that bad...the ocean is close enough to cool it all down, and we brought a little fan to help move some air around(def. suggested if you consider going). The food is awesome. the guacamole rocks. the drinks are good and strong. we ate the continental breakfast every day and it was always fresh and always enough. you can tell that la luna is the best place on the stretch of beach. you can grab a bike and take a ride down to the biosphere. its a little bit of a ride but its fun and there are places to stop for lunch along the way. The ruins are in the other direction..but def. take a cab and a bathing suite because you are going to want to get in the water!

in the middle of our trip we ate at another hotel restaurant, La Zebra and got super sick! it took a whole day out of our vacation...but Rubin at la luna was really helpful..he suggested some tea, and got us something lighter to eat off the lunch menu even though it was dinner time since our stomachs where not quite ready for too much food yet.

the staff is super helpful and never seem to be bothered by any requests. La luna is seriously your best choice

I am another happy La Luna bride as I recently (early September) got married there. We had 40 guests and our family and friends rented out the whole place.

Rooms: Simply, but tastefully decorated individual cabanas or suites that all have something unique and interesting about them. Many of them sort of remind you of something you would see in Disneyland. It's hard to describe...they are rustic, quaint, and chic all at the same time. Each room has a large multi-gallon jug with drinking water – a very important amenity in Mexico. We stayed at Villa Zanzibar with my family, and loved it. It did get hot, but they had 2 fans in the rooms and the refreshing giant pool to make up for it. It was the perfect place for guests to meet and hang out during our stay. We have some fun stories as a result of trying to finish up all the tequila and vodka by the pool.

Food: Jacob, the onsite manager and chef, has really created a tasty menu. I consider myself a foodie, and I found every meal we ate at La Luna to be delicious! My husband said the cactus enchiladas here were the best meal he had during our entire 2 week trip. Our wedding guests all had something different that was their favorite and you know how wedding food can be.

Service: When we were checking out, Quamie (sp?) said "La Luna is your home." It really does feel that way after you stay there. It feels like you are staying with close family. They searched high and low for a guest’s lost (expensive) camera, and eventually found it. Jacob traveled to town to go get us ice for our welcome party when he could have just told us they ran out and we needed to get it ourselves. Quamie always made the drinks to our liking and they were tasty! I really cannot say enough about the staff here. They are truly what makes this place special.

Wedding: The wedding went absolutely perfect thanks to our coordinator (Gwen and Marion at www.destinationweddingstulum.com) and the staff at La Luna. It was really great having a coordinator, as they did give the space a really nice and classy touch on top of all the other coordinating and vendor recommendations Gwen did. Jacob said it perfectly when it came to our stay and the wedding: "What's good for you, is good for me." These are people who really know how to run a business that is customer-oriented. We did a scouting trip and probably checked out half the hotels in Tulum for our wedding. La Luna has very reasonable rates, and was the only place that would not charge extra for reasonable requests (e.g. site fees, beach-cleaning fees, late night reception snacks, etc.).
Sometimes they even laugh when you offer to pay...like duh...you are our guests, of course that is included. It really shows how much La Luna considers their guests to be more like close friends and family.

I really cannot rave enough about how great La Luna is – from their beautiful rooms and amazing food to the best customer service I have ever received in my life. We will be back MANY times because La Luna now does feel like a second home.

Eugene and Natalie
*If there are other brides out there who have wedding questions about Tulum, feel free to email me at gnat182@gmail.com as I check that more than the PMs here.

Positives. The location is great and the beach in front of the hotel is beautiful. The staff are very nice and seemed willing to please. The food was very good. Problems. Given the high rating, we expected more. The placed seemed run down. It wasn't very clean and was in poor repair. Among other issues, there appeared to be a long history of bugs squashed on walls, the toilet seat was broken, there were holes in the window and roof screens, the mosquito netting did not enclose the bed (and also had holes in it), the drapes were stained, the drape rod fell every time it was moved, the palapas roof had a hole in it, and paint was peeling from the walls. While the location is great, we expected better repair for $200/night (low season).

Dear Jagador,

Thank you for your honest review. We take what our guests say very seriously and it is these reviews that help us improve our hotel. We have currently closed our hotel for a few weeks to do some maintenance and will be re-opening on October 5th, 2010. We will be painting, repairing, replacing and updating a lot of the features in the cabanas. I apologize that we were not up to your standard when you were here, however we hope these improvements will better the hotel for guests to come.
