“Good value, nice staff”
Reviewed 16 July 2010

My family here for 3 days in July. The Christie Lodge has a good location near restaurants, the grocery store and shops in Avon. The rooms are smallish but have most everything one would need, including two TVs, fridge and microwave. Nothing fancy, but the price was great considering you are next to Vail. Internet was fine, and there was lots of "mall space" outside the room door for extra area, including chairs, ping pong. The staff was very accomodating and helpful in every way.

There is no A/C, so it got kind of warm in the room, but they had two fans that we used to draw in the cool air from outside.

Christie Lodge was amazing. I travelled with my 3 children (12,14 and 16) for a week of skiing at Vail and Beaver Creek. Amazing location, the three bedroom provided more than enough room, used the BBQ conviniently located for several meals, also ate at the Subway attached to the lodge. Staff was friendly, Hot tubs was relaxing, Ping Pong tournament that I organized was a lot of fun. Shuttle service to Beaver Creek was better than driving and no parking fees. Although the time share that I traded is 5 star, I think that I got good value for my trade and definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a place to stay for skiing Vail and Beaver Creek. Internet service was free and reliable, even for skype calls to home.

This is not the place to stay! Unless you are just a ski bum looking for a comfy place to sleep... or a family on a budget... I don't think you will be too happy here.

The design is very much like a prison. big long hallways with entrances to the units off of them. the so called "Bedroom" is really more like a large closet in the unit's entrance hallway -- with the front door on one side of the bed, and the wall on the other. there is no window that you can open in this "bedroom" because the room is off the main shared corridor.

the amount of water that comes out of the shower is but a little better than a trickle, thanks to the most miserly shower head i have ever seen. I had to go down to the front desk to ask for "new" blankets and pillows, as what was on the bed was so worn it looked like it was issued in WW2.

another thing that almost made me sick, was the SMELL from the Subway restaurant right under our unit that started every morning around 8 when they opened.

The few positive things that I can say are that the mattress was super comfortable (once I put the brand new bedding on it), and most of the staff was very nice. (The night manager on the other other hand should be written off.)

So if you are on a budget, and are not a sensitive city slicker like me, give it a go. But if you care at all about design and quality, you can do far better! Seriously, try next door at the modern and new Comfort Inn!

Cons: The accomodations were not acceptable, in my opinion. This is very much a budget hotel that is trying to pretend that it is something it's not. The online description says "completely renovated units...granite....etc". The carpeting, the furniture, the cabinets, the TV...have clearly not been renovated in recent history. The countertops are, indeed, granite; however, they are sitting on dated, beat-up looking cabinets. The bed is immediately inside the door, with the headboard up against the common hallway, with a window next to it. Most disappointing? The bed/mattress was so soft and uncomfortable that we barely slept, even after being worn out from the slopes. Note: If more than one couple stayed in this unit, one couple would be walking through the other's bedroom everytime they come/go. Also, the fireplace...you can only burn a firelog (one is included with the rental), which simply smoldered and flickered. No roaring fire in the fireplace here.
Pros: Location was great, with a very short drive (or shuttle ride) to Beaver Creek free skier parking. Service was acceptable. The unit was clean.
Bottom line? Fine if you are on spring break, seriously on a budget, etc.

Honestly i"m appalled at these reviews of one stars and such! These places obviously aren't AS nice but the room has granite counter tops, hot showers, clean beds, and everything a kitchen could have except an oven. You also don't have to pay for wi-fi unlike other hotels. There is a lot of stairs and such but again what your paying is so unbelievably low! Next time i come to Vail i'm coming back here!

My husband and i stayed here in early march 2010. Very convenient to activities and groceries, as we cooked in about one half our dinners. Staff very helpful. They will loan you a crockpot, electric kettle and anything else you want to make a meal. Bus picked us up righr outside the door to the gondola for downhill skiing or into Beaver Creek. Recommend it for any age, but we are both in our 70's. Canadians giving the review.

The Good:

This hotel is cheap, has a quick and free shuttle to/from the resort, on-site ski rentals, and the rooms are adequately sized for two adults (maybe two adults with one child). The "kitchen" has an old microwave and an electric skillet (square) about 10-inches on a side. The refrigerator is about the size of two dorm-room units put together. Plenty of dishes and cookware. The living room has a fireplace and a TV + DVD player. Bed was comfy, small TV in the bedroom. Bathroom has...plenty of towels.

The Bad:

The layout of the hotel and room are both idiotic. Much has been written on here about the numerous stairs, and the silly idea of having your bedroom next to the hallway. It's very noisy in the morning when everyone heads out to go skiing (usually between 7am and 8am...really, like an hour of noise). The bathroom is super-tiny, as is the bedroom, hallway, closets, cabinets, and kitchen...pretty much everything. The shower is very old and takes a good deal of warming up. The Wi-Fi is spotty and slow.

The UGLY:

First of all, the staff here is utterly apathetic. They don't care about anything except checking you in, and even that is done with a scowl. I don't blame them, really...they're the cheapest suites in the area and will never lack for business, no matter how many people they alienate. Still, it's just horrible to not even say "Thanks For Staying With Us," let alone "How Was Your Stay?" They just don't care about anything, really.

The noise is pretty ridiculous at times. I understand that it's a bunch of young people on a budget using this hotel as a base of operations for skiing. But it feels like a college dorm sometimes -- sooooo much shouting and banging around and "YO BRAH THE SLOPES WERE DANK TODAY!!!"

The place reeks of chlorine. 'Nuff said. Actually, I understand why they need all that chlorine when I look at the hot tub. Sick. If you use it, you're asking for an infection.

Summary:

This place is fine for anyone who intends to spend all day on the slopes, regardless of your income. A low-budget family should consider saving for another year and finding a cleaner, more modern building. Anyone who's just here for business or a couple of nights visiting the area, spend a little more and stay someplace nicer.
