We had an amazing two-night stay at Chateau de la Roussie after coming across it on a French accommodation website, and recognising it as one of the settings from one of our favorite movies. The home is beautiful and the grounds are lovely, and we were welcome to wander aroud and explore. We stayed in a separate entrance bedroom on the ground floor of the house, which also has it's own ensuite (shower and toilet). However, there are is also self-contained accommodation in separate buildings on the property. Our room was very comfortable and clean. On one of the days we had our breakfast in the main dining room of the house which was quite an experience, given that this house is 800 years old.
The owner of the home is very friendly and welcoming, and was even able to accommodate us after our booking had not been properly confirmed, which we were unaware of prior to arriving. After a long drive from Paris to arrive at the accommodation, this was a great relief as we had never been to the area before and would not have know what to do.
You will also be provided with information about where to eat and what to see in the surrounding countryside, which we found amazing to drive through. There are lots of castles in the surrounding area. Nearby Sarlat is a beautiful medieval town with lots of lovely shops and places to eat. It's quite a tourist spot though, so would get quite busy at times. You can park just on the edge of the town and then walk around from there.
I would highly recommend Chateau de la Roussie as a base for visiting this amazing area of France. Two nights simply wasn't enough though.
