We stayed 2 nights in Thora Boloka, and it was magic!
Not too far off Polokwane and a nice 4x4 drive from Tzaneen, here you can experience the indigenous Magoebaskloof forest.
The birding is spectacular, with Paul, our guide, being extremely knowlegeable and impressively enthusiastic.
The forest is beautiful and a short walk to the largest Kiepersol in Africa.
Thora Boloka is a beautiful, rustic cabin, sleeping 6. As it shares 1 bathroom, this would be best for families.
Then, I have to mention Lisa - she is very likeable and forthcoming. I forgot a Knivemakers' Guild knive there, and it was no trouble at all for her to courier it to me.

Thanks, Lisa. You have a piece of paradise and we will be going back soon.

A return visit after a 4-year absence! At the river crossing we had a bird party which included Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher and Olive Bushshrike. We stayed three nights at one of the lovely Lodge Cabins and were welcomed by Grey Cuckooshrike and Yellow-streaked Greenbul. With assistance from David Letsoalo as bird guide we added more lifers such as Black-fronted Bushshrike, Scaly-throated Honeyguide, Cape Parrot, White-starred Robin, Orange Ground Thrush and Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk. His phenomenal skill to find the small Green Twinspot or spot the camouflaged Lemon Dove from a distance left us in awe, and the additional information he shared about the forest was a bonus. Kurisa Moya and David are highly recommended to find as many "Magoebaskloof" specials possible in a short time.

If you are going to stay at Kurisa Moya you probably are going there specifically to go birding, or to get as far away from the city as possible. It's remote, it's rustic, it's wonderful! Don't go expecting all the amenities--it has a comfy bed, a warm wood-burning stove, a bathroom, kitchen, porch, and solar-powered lighting. Everything you need for a cozy getaway.

We stayed one night and wish we would have done at least one more. We stayed in one of the cabins in the woods which was great because you felt like you had the entire mountain to yourself. I got cold at night, so we let the stove burn until we fell asleep--which kept things toasty. We had dinner prepared and brought to us by David--who also happens to be the excellent birding guide here--more on that later. The meal was amazing--home-cooked and one of the best things we ate in Africa. Breakfast was a boxed breakfast, which was also pretty good given where we were.

Now to the birding--again I would imagine most people that make it all the way out here are there for the birding. I booked a couple hours with David and he helped track down pretty much every bird I hoped to see. The feeders at the main house were great for seeing some of the specialty birds as well. If you want to see Narina Trogon and Knysna Turaco this is the place to go--not to mention all the other great birds!

If you're not a birder the tranquility is great--and you can check out the biggest cabbage tree in the world--pretty cool too!

Room Tip: Try to get one of the Cabins! Excellent!

The cottage where we stayed in Kurisa Moya provided for all our needs with the simplest and most natural of materials. Firewood was stacked next to our fireplace; the kitchen was perfectly stocked; the bed, mattress and blankets were wonderfully comfortable. Lisa and her staff cooked meals that night after night surpassed our expectations. One suggestion for visitors in the winter: bring thermal underwear, as nighttimes can get chilly!

Then there were the Birds: while sitting on the porch of our cottage drinking coffee one afternoon, a Narina Trogon flew to and perched on a branch right beside us - what more could a couple on a bird-watching holiday ask for?! In addition, we were taken out by David and Paul to see birds, and got brought to many local sights we otherwise would never have known to find, seeing beautiful lifers up close in phenomenal settings. Amongst these birds were: Bat Hawk, African Emerald Cuckoo, Cape Parrot, Orange Ground Thrush, Sabota's Lark.

Thank you, Lisa, for your dedication in making and sustaining this paradise for bird and nature lovers.

My wife and I spent a few days at Kurisa Moya during and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The accommodation is very comfortable and the cabins are very well equipped and the setting deep in the magnificent indigenous forest is very special. Birding is top class and we enjoyed two morning outings with David Letsoalo and despite challenging weather conditions we still enjoyed some great sightings!

Room Tip: Definitely one of the forest cabins!

First, one should realize that this is out of the way/off the beaten path and the roads to it can be a bit challenging. There is no outside electricity but there is some provided by solar energy which provides lighting. The second bed is up a rather steep ladder whose rungs were, unfortunately not all parallel to each other or the floor so a scamper down in the middle of the night to use the toilet might be an adventure. The kitchen is well appointed and the gas appliances work. We had dinner provided and they are a bit pricey but quite extensive and well prepared. It's also a bit of a walk to the chalets from the parking area but that leads to the blissful isolation. As noted in the title and by others, this is the place to stay for birders as birding is good on the grounds and guide David is superb. Lisa is a most accommodating hostess.

This is a very special place. The location and particularly the birding is world class. It has some of the best bird guides in the country. We were lucky to have Patrick who jumped started us into the wonders of South African birds and forest wildlife. In the remaining four weeks of our trip we did not find anyone that matched his high standards. Lisa gave us a big welcome and met all our needs. The setting of Kurisa Moya is unmatched. We recommend a stay there not just for serious birders, but for anyone who wants a relaxing and peaceful experience in a wonderful part of Africa.

Room Tip: Chose a chalet in the forest
