On our way to the Kruger National Park we stayed for one night in the Glenshiel Hotel. The hotel is beautiful, very friendly staff, nice rooms, and splendid food for a very good price. Absolutely worth staying for a night.

Tranquil setting to get away from the hussle of the city.great views from the dining area and the room looked into the central garden.the room had a fireplace which we made great use of.The tavern inn bar was fun with the whole bar to ourselves on the night.room was slightly dated but lent itself to the Countryside grandeur of the hotel.

We did a trip on a motorcycle so when we arrived we were exhausted, we were met by Joe and Bongani, they were friendly and polite and so accommodating. We were shown to our room which was lovely and big ,with lovely fresh soft bed linen , I do however think the towels need upgrading and bigger towels would also be great. The food was very good however the starter portions were a bit small, ie three mussels?? or two skinny spring rolls, but if you asked for more they were so accommodating. Bongani and Joe were incredible they were the only two staff on duty to serve a fully booked long weekend and they were flawless, On Saturday morning we did not go for breakfast, we are not big breakfast eaters, after the kitchen had closed Bongani came to the room with menus and said that breakfast is important and we should have some, a first ever that someone cared you had breakfast, his service was impecable,It was like we had gone to see good old friends for the weekend and were treated so incredibly well . Than you to Joe and Bongani for such wonderful customer experience.

My husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in this lovely spot. we booked one of the executive suites and had a lovely late afternoon glass of champagne in front of the cosy log fire. Service was excellent. Lovely little touches... petals on the dinner table, chocolate mints in the shape of a heart when we went back to the room after our meal... We both really enjoyed it. Loved the rambling greenery and the slightly old world feel. Would definitely go back.

My wife 'kidnapped' me for my birthday and took me to this prestigious hotel for some quiet relaxation and spoiling.... and it was absolutely brilliant!! The rave reviews are all true! Great food, great service, great view, stunning gardens, warm atmosphere, cosy fireplace, the whole deal was perfect!! My wife even organized champaign and a fruit/chocolate basket for the room.

All the time I was thinking what a positive review I will be able to write after such a great stay. And then we booked out...

In the last 30 minutes of our stay, whilst we at breakfast, someone entered our room, with a key, and stole much of our fruit and chocolates!! (photo) This single event soured our whole special experience and became the single most outstanding memory of our idyllic and perfect birthday getaway. Naturally the front desk was extremely apologetic and offered to replace the fruit and chocolate, but that would not have helped our dampened spirits!! I was just glad we had already put our valuables in the car...!!

The Glenshiel Hotel presents itself as a 'country lodge' and that's exactly what it is: a large, rambling farmhouse-style main building with rooms arranged in a courtyard around the back.

There aren't very many rooms but they are absolutely huge: a suite, rather than a room is what we had (#4). I suppose it is expensive in the context of South African hotels but for us as UK travellers it was about the same as we'd pay for an ordinary room in England - you get so much more for your money in SA.

On the day we arrived there was no electricity at all. This wasn't the hotel's fault - the whole region was out - and this lasted until about four the next morning. To the hotel's credit they gave us dinner for free - they have a generator, but it isn't powerful enough to run the whole place - and provided lots of candles on big candlestick in the rooms, which actually seemed very appropriate (and they'd obviously done this before).

The food and service was very good indeed. There didn't seem to be be very many staff on duty at all, but whenever we wanted a drink, or some help, someone popped up at a moment's notice. Maybe they're just trained to be invisible until you need them (in which case they're very good it it!)

The countryside around is very popular with South Africans visiting the forests in the region with its attendant rivers and dams - spectacular trout fishing is one of the area's attractions.

We were there for a family wedding so I probably won't have reason to return but if I ever do, I will definitely stay at the Glenshiel Hotel again.

We stayed at the Glenshiel in October for our anniversary weekend. Hotel OK. Definitely no longer 4star, maybe many years ago. Rooms large and clean, however all the rooms smelled like smoke because of the fire places in the rooms. However we were there during a summer month and it still had that smell. The food was totally average. The kitchen constantly had our orders incorrect especially with breakfast. The hotel also has minimum staff. The person running the reception is also your waiter etc. During dinner we had to ask for some soft music in the dining room (something small but its finer details that counts). We felt like we paid alot for a "not that great stay".
