When coming to Litang bear in mind that this is not a very touristic area. The hostels are very simple, roads are scary and bumping and sometimes it is difficult to find mini-vans to get out of town. But these are exactly what make the area still preserved. The landscape is amazing and the Tibetan village around the monastery is astonishing. I agree that single rooms are too expensive here , but dorms in Tibetan style in Potala inn is the best option. I had great time there and meeting Medok was a high point. She is really sweet! But if you are looking for comfort, then you better go to places like Shangri-la.

Room Tip: There are two dorms, make sure you take the Tibetan stylle where you can have more privacy. It is a...

There are too many petty criticisms of this guest house. Medok, the manager is a wonderful and unique Tibetan lady. After spending a year in the UK learning English she chose to return to her home town to help her people. Please remember that you are visiting the Tibetan province of Kham, now Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in western Sichuan. You can not expect Western standards but the Potala does its best to at least provide western bathrooms on the third floor. They are not responsible for the town drains! The views of the Tibetan mountains compensate for any minor problems. Medok helps all she can to give you a glimpse into Tibetan culture and isn't that why you are there?

Room Tip: The third floor has the best views and western toilets.

I think that you only have 3 places in town to stay at and if I'm right this lady owns two of them. She is very nice and very helpful in anything you need. She was able to book other rooms at hotels in other towns as we left. So here are the good and bad....the rooms are large with twin beds a TV a few tables and a bathroom. The not so good was the bathroom was a little nasty and the toilet leaked on the floor and so the bathroom was always wet. The good news is I do not spend a lot of time in the bathroom. The Internet works on the 2nd floor where they have a bar and tables. People spent time in that room but the bar and tea room were never open. You can get warm beer from her at the desk. It said they have food but I never saw anyone eat or order food.
They did set up horseback riding for us but you might be better off just visiting the nomads and have lunch. They only have two horses and the owner just walks you in a field so you don't really ride anyplace. But we did love the family and it was a fun day for us. If you do go to the nomads you might like to take gifts for them or the kids. The clothing was in need of replacing and maybe tea or candy.
Sorry back to the hostel, it is very close to the bus and a few feet from town. Only the owner speaks English.

Room Tip: Again if you have a hard time walking or stairs are a problem stay downstairs.

I had read poor reviews on here of this place but they were the only ones who answered phone so I decided to risk it. The staff were uninterested to the point of rudeness, the toilets were pretty horrible and there wasn't a shower, a stern notice warns of the consequence of 2nd floor guests venturing to the 3rd floor bathroom. And the bar never seemed open. On the plus side she did get me a motorbike for the day.

The owner is a wonderful tibetan girl. She is lovely, pretty, and can give you good informations in English.
The dorms are alright, nothing special.
But the big problem is the bathrooms. Toilets are incredibly stinky and dirty!

A single under ¥260? No. Electricity? No. Water to shower? No. Water to drink? No. Help getting a cab? No. Wifi/Interweb of any kind? No. A dorm room without used condoms on the floor? Nope. Maybe Medok speaks English but the only word I heard her say was no.

The Lonely Planet does recommend it and it's an okay place to stay given where you are- people reviewing this place saying the English is bad and the wifi doesn't work... what do you expect? If you're traveling to Litang you should come here knowing it's not a big city but in fact a very out of the way Tibetan town- just take a look around. There is one woman at this guesthouse who speaks extremely good English, and another one who speaks more than enough to get by and help guests out. The others don't speak any but if you have a question the two who do are always nearby to help out. The wifi didn't work when I was there although it was because of the Dalai Lama's birthday and the celebrations going on for it so I can't comment much more on that. The big downsides here for me were that the dorms (10 people rooms) were not so comfy- bright light outside the window, metal bunk bed frames (and while I was there it was full of noisy Chinese tourists getting up early to see the sky burial on both days- crumpling plastic bags at 5am made it annoying!). The bathrooms are also a downside- the toilets are fine (squat toilets) but the shower for the dorm (all the way down the long hallway) was just in the main part of the bathroom by the sink and had a small curtain separating it from the rest of the bathroom- dirty floors and a dripping ceiling made for a not-so-nice experience although it did have hot water which was a bonus.

All in all- I wouldn't stay again although it was an okay place to stay. I've heard that the Peace Guesthouse (the other one recommended by Lonely Planet) is a nicer, and cheaper, place to stay.

Room Tip: Split with some friends and stay in a private 3 or 4 bed room, make sure you're on the 3rd floor...
