“Outdoor eating at its best”
Reviewed 9 August 2013

What a wonderful find! This restaurant is a real gem and well worth seeking out - situated in a wood, next to a lake which is part of a network of ancient peat bogs, it looks from a distance like a sort of snack-hut but do not be fooled! We enjoyed a really hearty home-cooked 3 course meal - the food was rustic and very simple, but obviously freshly prepared and really tasty. The main attraction of Des Tourbieres is being able to sit right by the lake and feed the coypu and ducks, and just generally enjoy the lovely surroundings.

It would be an ideal place to take children as the chance to see and feed the wild neighbours up close is something you don't find very often. The owners were really friendly and welcoming too, making the whole evening a really lovely experience. Booking recommended; we visited on a Sunday evening after being unable to get a table on the Saturday.

“A unique experience with excellent food”
Reviewed 2 July 2013

This is not a restaurant you find by accident but by many recommendations from those who have dined there. The restaurant is only open in the summer as the dining area is a wooden decking with a canvas roof overlooking a lake . A lot of the food is home made and is always freshly prepared and cooked. It is very informal dining but the service from the owners is first class and they will always stop for a chat no matter how many customers they have. Ex-pats who live nearby visit often as at 14 euros for 3 courses of excellent food with good, local wine also who wouldn't ? The local French are frequent visitors also. A real attraction is watching the Ragodin ( Coypu) swimming in the lake and coming to the lake edge by the decking to be fed bits of bread, which is encouraged by the owners. The Ragodin breed happily here and there were 8 youngsters this year. As another reviewer has written , " An experience not to be missed " .

“Enchanting and Picnicuesque, Good Value”
Reviewed 28 September 2012

We would never have gone here, but were forced to go here because the restaurant in nearby Villebois-Lavalette was fully booked. What good luck about such cooincidences. The place is a summer fresh-air experience. The tables are on a covered deck overlooking a little woodland lake, and there was even some odd-looking beaver in it. A great place to go if you have children or pets with you, as it is most extremely informal.

The meals were good quality for the money, with a small menu but enough to find something on. We were satisfied, even though expecting something more elegant earlier in the evening.

The staff, which appears just to be the hostess and the cook, were very friendly and took time for a small chat despite a full house.

“An experience not to be missed”

This place is not easy to find, but well worth it when you get there. Friendly staff, good rustic food and an astounding environment make this our favourite place to take our friends. Feeding the animals, is the after lunch entertainment which never fails to amuse. Walk around the paths to enjoy the peaceful scenery, but remember there is no 'indoors' to this restaurant so if it's cool dress accordingly. Enjoy!

“Unique..”
Reviewed 7 June 2011

In the middle of a birch wood, this is little more than a platform with balcony. It overlooks the river and a big attraction is to look at and feed the ragondin. The food is pretty good and the setting is amazing. It is a really unique dining experience with VERY friendly staff. You can expect a 3 course menu at 14 euros and a drinkable local wine at 8 euros a bottle. When you book ask for a table overlooking the river for the essential ragondin spotting, the staff even leave bread out for you to feed them. No need to get dressed up and a great fun way to dine. All very odd but in a lovely way.
