Just back from a 2 night stay in this beautiful castle. If you want a lovely relaxing break this is the place to go.A lovely warm welcome from very friendly staff, absolutely delicious food in the dining room,a very comfortable library to sit and relax in,facilities to bring along your pet dog, wonderful bedrooms with terrific beds (ours was a magnificent wooden boat shaped bed!), a red carpet on arrival with candles lighting either side of the entrance hall! A truly beautiful romantic place! Okay, mobile phones don't work and no tvs in the bedroom- what peace! Great to switch off and relax totally! Will definitely be back!

Anyone who is looking to stay in an identakit plush, luxurious hotel chain ...stop reading now!!

Because what you get at Kinnitty Castle is the real deal - a big generous slice of traditional old world Irish Hospitality - sadly somewhat of a dying art, to say the least.

Yes, everything isn't polished to an inch of its life, some of the old floors creak, some of the antique lamps are cracked and yes, someone has gouged out the glass eye of one of the (poor) magnificent deer whose mounted heads decorate the wall over the staircase.

...but this is genuine Ireland - authentic Irish charm, not like the show we might try to put on for American tourists, but honest to God Ireland, like it was before the country was taken over by Celtic Tigers, Non-English Speaking Hotel Staff and 200 euro Ugg boots for every tween and teenager.

We drove up the long impressive drive to the castle and were more than impressed by it as it stoood in icy spendour in the frosty fields of its grounds.

Pushing open the huge old wooden door we saw they had laid out the red carpet for us ...literally!

Ahead of us were a flight of stone steps, with red carpet and huge burning candles on stands either side - atmospheric or what!

We received a fantastically warm welcome and were ushered to our not room ... but suite! The de la Poer Suite.

The room was huge with a lovely pointed door and huge bathroom with rocking chair and free standing atique bath in the middle of the room.

We absolutely loved it!!!

For those chain hotel fans - yes it could have been a bit warmer, but it was a freezing night, no there was no tv but yes there was free wi-fi!

Our bathroom had a wonderful view to the great hall and the courtyard and we really enjoyed reading up on the history of the castle.

Location wise it is great for a short tour to Tullamore then back through Birr to see a bit of the surrounding countryside.

We had booked the castle as one of the amazing value breaks from woodieshotelbreaks.com so we had one dinner included as well - so really unbelievable value on top of a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Breakfast was really top rate, served in the hotel restaurant with plenty of choice and variety. The staff were all local so as well as providing excellent service, they also had handy tips about exploring the area.

Having your breakfast in your room was only about 3.50 euros so that was also a nice option to have.

The dungeon bar was a great place to have drink or snack and apparently a big favourite with the locals.

Dinner was a revelation as the set menus you get on a weekend deal can so often be very limited and sometimes more of a school dinner offereing than gourmet cuisine. Not so Kinnitty Castle!

We both had our socks blown off by the interesting menu and superb quality of the food. "He who must be obeyed" is a really tough task master when it comes to cooking - and very hard to please especially with traditional Irish cooking (as our tastes lean more towards ethnic/exotic cuisine) - but sure enough he sent him compliments to the chef - which I have never ever heard him do before!!!

So absolutely full marks for dinner - we have never enjoyed a hotel dinner so much ...ever!

We also asked for a tour (as mentioned on the website) before we left and got to see a few of the other wonderful rooms including the bridal suite with its amazing huge ornate bed and other rooms with the incredible "boat beds" and four posterbeds.
So when booking it is worth asking which rooms are available as all are unique and uniquely furnished.

For those looking for an atmospheric experience I would visit the castle all year round, but for those comfort seeking creatures who must realise an authentic castle may sometimes be a little draughty or dimly lit, I would suggest they visit in summer time!

Please don't be put off by previous bad reviews this hotel is a real gem and a slice of Irish history and hospitality treat yourself to a romantic weekend but remember it is a real castle not a Carlton Hotel, so pack an extra sweater and prepare for a unique experience with great food, old world charm and authentic Irish hospitality ... priceless!

Im sorry but i cant believe how many good reviews this hotel got!I stayed here for only 1 night(thank god)and never would i darken its door again. It was absolutly filthy, glasses were covered in marks, really bad musty smell and food was terrible. The staff did their best to help but id say most of them are only brought in occasionally and really werent trained properly.I know its an old castle but even old buildings can be kept clean, there was cobwebs all over our room.A good face lift on this hotel would go along way but since the bank owns it,i doubt this will happen!!!

I stayed a few nights at Kinnitty Castle over the christmas holidays and i would highly recommend it. The staff are excellent and very professional and they make it their duty to make sure all your needs are met. The food is brilliant and very enjoyable. The crack appears to be endless in the bar with traditional music proivded on most nights. When its time to recover there is nothing better than taking a walk through its guided walkway in the woodalnds. This is a great hotel to go if its with the significant other or even if its a friend's weekend away together. its very easy to forget yourself amd unwind in the unique setting of kinnity castle.
Highly enjoyed my stay can't wait to get back another time soon.

My girlfriend treated me to a weekend away in Kinnity Castle Hotel as a surprise. I hadnt a clue where we were going as this was my first time being in Kinnity. when we drove off the N7 and onto smaller country roads I felt I was in the middle of no where (def in the sticks) the mountains and views were memorable. as we turned into the driveway I was amazed at the castle and its grounds, we had lovely walks, again great scenery, great hospitality and the food also matched. the room we stayed in was huge, the traditional style of the rooms were cool. I guess very different to the standard and mod hotels that I have grown use to. Def a different weekend and would recommend to anyone.

On entering through the Gates, your eyes are drawn to the derilict Spa and broken gates. The Castle when you look up is in need of some refurbishment, however when you enter through the doors the atmosphere is as you would imagine, old world.I requested a change of room.Unfortunately the windows would not open,no fresh air, didnt bother requesting another room, just too tired to bother.Stafff are very helpfull and pleasant. We booked 2 rooms at the same time,my friends received a fantastic suite, front of house and we ended up in a room you wouldnt swing a cat in and no windows. When we had a slight issue and rang reception to discuss...we were told "I dont know really what i can do about it"....Uh Uh......In receiveship, remember, nobody cares about you or your issues. However the food was good, atmosphere was exellent and once again i cannot fault the staff, they did the best they could..On the Wine List, there was only one white wine? Tut Tut and at dinner on the first night, they served the veggies,20 minutes after serving the main course....staff operating in a panic mode.Dont blame them, once again,no one in charge.Having said all that,i was there to chill out and ignored the problems, but really you fat cats accountants that run the place, please bear in mind, that you still have a responsibility to your customers who are paying your fees, whilst you try and generate cash and sell the place. We deserve a little better and i think the staff are overworked and understaffed but lovely people. One girl,i noticed was there for the entire 2 days i spent there,no breaks...she looked tired but still managed a smile,as i left.Eugene Maher

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for taking the time to review your recent visit to Kinnitty Castle Hotel, we take your comments on board. Kinnitty Castle Hotel is not your standard modern hotel. We are full of unique character and Olde World Charm, with each and every bedroom having its own specific features. Upon check-in, it was unfortunate that the room allocated to you did not appeal. However I am aware that you were offered a number of alternative bedroom types which also did not fit your needs.

At Kinnitty Castle Hotel we strive to meet and exceed all of our guests' requirements and needs. However upon booking, your specific requirements were not communicated clearly to our reservation team. We would have been more than happy to advise you at this stage that the Castle may not have met your expectations with regard to its bedroom type and decor.

We take your points on board however due to the age and style of certain bedrooms, we may not be to everybody's taste.

Kind regards,

Gillian
