It's hard to write about how much I love el Mercado. I've been coming here since I was a small child with my dad, who loved to take my sister and I out for tortas (delicious grilled sandwiches on french rolls) and chocomilks. This time, I travelled to San Miguel with my sister as an adult---a new experience that gave me new perspective on just how magical San Miguel is. We did a lot of things in our four days in SMA, but every day started with a trip to the mercado for a flavored atole---a completely new experience to us both. Holy MOLEY. How had I never had these before? The best atole stand is outside the market in an area covered with a roof where you will also see lots of women selling handmade gorditas, nopales, cheeses, and other assorted vegetables (the gorditas and nopales are always particularly delicious). Towards the back wall, you will find a bustling stand with about a dozen bright orange large thermoses. Try the galleta, the cascara, and the guayaba atoles---seriously, they are something special. Grab a half dozen of the delicious handmade tamales when you are there and you will be all set. If you're still hungry (impossible, really), go inside the market building and have some fresh juices or a chocomilk. This is a special, special place---don't miss it for fear of eating "street food". Every Mexican knows that this is actually the most delicious comfort food there is, so eat with confidence.

Everything you are interested in taking home from SMA - or eating while you are in SMA is here. The prices are great, you will even see locals shopping in the clothing and produce sections. You will see similar items all over town - but the prices here are really great. Several booth even have artisans at work - making the things they are selling.

This is "the place" to shop for just about anything - starting with fresh produce and other foods, moving briefly onto clothing, cowboy boots and small appliances, then into the main section with talavera pottery, toys, jewelry, bolsas, and other goodies. If you are bored, just take a long stroll through the mercado and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells.
