“Best Kept Secret!”
Reviewed 23 September 2011

I recently had the pleasure to visit the charming town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and stay at the Casa de Sierra Nevada (an Orient Express hotel). The minute you set foot in the hotel, you feel as if you're being transported back into old, colonial, elegant Mexico. The rooms are located in a series of old mansions, and each room is unique and elegantly decorated. They each have traditional Mexican decor with the comforts of modern times (including plasma screen televisions, etc). Rooms overlook quaint courtyards or cobblestone streets and the sound of church bells will lull you to sleep at night! Beyond the sleeping rooms, guests can also experience the phenomenal restaurants that are on site, indulge in the amazing spa or relax by the swimming pool which is set in the most beautiful garden you've seen. And... if you're still looking for "more", the hotel also has a cooking school that offers daily classes. Everything from taking a trip to the local market to buy fresh produce to learning how to create typical Mexican meals with the Executive Chef is possible! I honestly do not have enough positive things to say about this hotel. If you are looking for a unique, relaxing and magical getaway- I highly suggest visiting the enchanting town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and experiencing this hidden gem of a hotel! I can't wait to go back!!

Having visited San Miguel on several occasions and fallen completely in love with the city, my (now) wife and I could think of no better location for our wedding at the end of July. Our choice of the Casa de Sierra Nevada for the ceremony and reception was a no-brainer. My wife, her kids and I had stayed at the hotel on three previous occasions and had always had the best of experiences. The rooms, the grounds, the restaurants, and, in particular, the staff, had always been first-rate. We were anticipating a wonderful wedding, and the hotel did not disappoint. We started things off the day before the wedding with a private dinner for family and close friends at the hotel's Casa del Parque restaurant. The dinner was preceded by a raucous callejoneada--complete with burros, mariachis, and multiple cups of wine and tequila--which meandered its way from the hotel to El Jardin and La Parroquia before arriving about an hour later at the restaurant. The setting of the Casa del Parque is idyllic--open-air on one side, looking out onto a lovely Spanish-style courtyard with stately trees and beautifully-maintained grounds. The traditional Mexican menu was a big hit with everyone, and the staff did an exemplary job of making sure our glasses were always full. The small band arranged by the hotel was excellent. It proved to be a perfectly relaxing and enjoyable afternoon and evening--just what was needed to calm any pre-wedding jitters. For our wedding the following afternoon, we opted for a small civil ceremony on the terrace of the hotel's Casa Palma. The view of San Miguel is breathtaking from that vantage point, and the terrace was the perfect size for our 50-person party. The weather, despite looking threatening earlier in the afternoon, was ideal and the ceremony went off without a hitch. Our champagne and cake brindis was complemented nicely by the wonderful jazz trio recommended by the hotel. My bride and I were in heaven. The ensuing wedding reception, however, proved to be the piece de resistance. We elected to have the reception outdoors, by the pool between the Casa Limon and the Casa Palma. As July is the rainy season in San Miguel, the hotel erected a giant awning that covered the entire area around the pool. There was just the right amount of space for 10 tables seating 10 people each, a small dance floor, a stage for the band, and a bar off to one side. Because the pool area is replete with trees and flowering bushes, we needed very little in the way of floral arrangements. The reception's four-course meal was, as expected, magnificent. The amuse bouche, shrimp appetizers, steak and salmon main courses and desserts were all perfectly prepared and delicious. Saludos to the hotel's executive chef! Little did we know, but the best was yet to come. We had left the details of the after-dinner party entirely to Martha, the hotel's wedding planner, and weren't sure exactly what to expect. We were shocked (but pleasantly so) by the grandiosity and splendor of the night's festivities. The band and accompanying dancers gave an amazing performance--providing a good mix of contemporary and traditional music, with songs in English as well as Spanish--and somehow managed to hang in there for six hours with a minimum of breaks. Totally unexpected were the mojigangas, clowns on stilts, a small fireworks display, crazy party favors and props, the little cart used to parade the newlyweds around the dance floor, the person in the bull suit (a particular favorite of my wife, who loved playing the matadora), etc. It was a wonderfully zany celebration! Topping off the evening was a tornaboda at 1:00 a.m. featuring light servings of soup, tacos and an exquisite dessert. Everyone left the party tired, satiated and very happy. My friends and family, some of whom had never been to Mexico, were extremely complimentary of the hotel's beautifully designed and decorated rooms, the gorgeous grounds, the incredible food and drink, and the wonderful staff (as well as of San Miguel, in general). My wife and I are particularly grateful to Martha for planning the wedding of our dreams. Thanks again to everybody at the Casa de Sierra Nevada for giving us a truly remarkable and unforgettable wedding.

What a wonderful hotel. I was fortunate to have stayed at Casa De Sierra Nevada for two nights this summer. Only a few blocks from the center of the charming colonial town of San Miguel de Allende, the hotel is made up of several mansions within a block of one another. Each accomodation is unique and all are updated with the most modern amenities. What makes the property special is friendly and talented staff and management. Excellent restaurant, cozy bar, spa, cooking school and the most beautiful gardens and swimming pool help make the hotel special.

The hotel lobby has vanished, now there is a small corner office, with no name , the size of the tiny grocery store opposite. Could be an office of any small business , certainly not the entrance of a luxurious hotel. If Orient-Express was once equivalent to quality and luxury it certainly isn't the case here where check-in and check-out are handled by a young bellboy and you are show the room by security. The rooms and hotel are neglected, the furniture is all a mish mash of cheap, ummatched furniture bought perhaps at an out of business auction? What happened ? I have stayed here in the past and it was lovely. It is now run-down, short staffed and uncared for. Stayed only 1 night, could not get out of there soon enough!! Sad

While I expected the old world charm at LaJa Spa, I was not expecting a complimentary foot massage prior to my massage. A wonderful, surprising, relaxing warm up to a healthy massage. Gracias.

We stayed in the Horse stables. Wonderful Talavera tile bathroom. Pleasant outlook with views of the church. Lovely pool. Dedicated staff. The concierge arranged a tour of the church out of town with a the hotels informative guide, Jesus, and our trip with coyote canyon and could not have been more helpful. We enjoyed the Culinary package. The market trip was a highlight of our stay and the cooking class was fun, particularly cooking the cactus!
