“Beyond our expectations”
Reviewed 19 January 2014

Seven days and a delightful experience. Extraordinary staff and excellent restaurant. We had a great suite which was very spacious and comfortable. Probably need to choose rooms carefully, as the hotel is spread out among a few buildings on a busy, narrow, street.
This hotel compares, on a small scale, with some of the Oberoi hotels we've stayed at in India.

Room Tip: Probably don't want to be on the street. Beware of the church bells in the early morning.

Four nights in January gave us a restful location for city explorations, walks and dining at great places within walking distance. (wear solid walking shoes, streets are cobblestone)
Staff is so helpful and just delightful people. Pool is beautiful, breakfast is first class, we ate dinners out.

Room Tip: Main house rooms are quiet as a tomb and still close to dining room and concierge.

We just came back from our stay in San Miguel and enjoyed it extensively. The hotel is in a very central location and the service is of a very high quality. Upon arrival we were told that we had been given an upgrade. Although we did benefit from a larger and more luxurious room, we were stuck in a dark room in the main house. When we got to see some of the rooms in the other properties, we felt it could have been better. It was nice to have a proper turn-down service and the room was always impeccable. The only trouble we did have was that somebody had left the bedroom alarm clock with an alarm on for 6 am. That is something that should not happen.

Room Tip: Don't take the deluxe rooms in the main house. Not as pretty as the rest.

We traveled to San Miguel de Allende from Christmas through New Years. We experienced a rare cold snap, where the rain and chilly air kept up inside- but that was a pleasure with our cozy fireplaces and warm beds! We had a jr suite (#413) and let me tell you - it was comfortable and wonderful. Gustavo Rodriquez, our butler and right hand man, really made us feel like a member of his family. He watched out for my family of 8, knew always had a smile on his face and was insanely efficient. Nothing was ever to much to ask of him, and he was always thoughtful. Guillermo was our waiter and was very patient with our many endless needs. The best part of this hotel would probably be the complimentary fire places in the rooms - there is nothing quite like falling asleep to a crackling fire.

My husband and I just got back from a week long stay in San Miguel de Allende. The town itself was quaint, but during working hours it is full of traffic and exhaust. A week was more than enough time. Unless you're signing up for special courses (yoga, cooking, Spanish lessons, etc.) or volunteering, 3-4 days is ideal.

With regard to Casa de Sierra Nevada, we were disappointed by this "luxury" hotel. As the website states, the hotel consists of 6 colonial mansions. However, most of the pictures you see are from the one renovated mansion (Casa Limon - building with pool) located directly across from Casa Principal (hotel lobby, dining room, and bar). The other 5 mansions are scattered within a "two block" radius, the furthest being Casa de Parque (approx. 0.3 miles away by Parque Juarez). Unless you pay more to guarantee a room in Casa Limon, you run the risk of dampening your luxury experience.

For over $400/night, my husband and I were placed in two different rooms during our week long stay at Casa de Sierra Nevada. Our first room (486), was located in the building just west of Casa Limon. It had its own stairwell that lead to a nice sized privated patio. However, the room itself was small, dark, and smelled like it hadn't been inhabited for years. The only natural light we really got was from a tiny window in the bathroom. On the first night we checked in, I noticed that there were dead ants in the tub. For some strange reason, the bathroom took up more space than the bedroom. It had two sinks and provided the only real seating we had, which was an old dingy looking chaise. The bedroom was so dark that I had to call down for another lamp. After two nights, we were transferred to room 355 because the water heater for our room completely broke down.

Room 355 was definitely an upgrade from the tomb that we were in, however it also had its fair share of issues. Room 355 is located in Casa Principal (lobby, dining room, bar, etc.), directly above the kitchen. While kitchen noise didn't seem to be much of a problem, the construction next door made it very difficult for us to rest and relax in our room. On Christmas Eve, the construction began at 7:30 a.m. The room itself is slightly brighter than Room 486. It had more windows and a great view of the Parroquia. The room was a decent size. There was actually somewhere to sit and relax. The room was big enough to fit a sofa chair, bench at the foot of the bed, and a small table with two chairs. The bathroom was normal sized, no tub and only one sink. The patio outside was less private and overlooked a rental car lot on one side.

Overall, the service at Casa de Sierra Nevada was decent. The people were hospitable. Gustavo is as pleasant as everyone says in their reviews. However, we didn't feel like anyone went particularly out of their way to help us. For example, we asked the front desk to make reservations at a restaurant for us one night. When we arrived, the restaurant had no note of our reservations. We mentioned it to the same woman at the front desk afterwards, she didn't really seem to care.

A final note on San Miguel and Casa de Sierra Nevada, the ringing bells are everywhere...at least if you're staying in a building on Hospicio Street. The bells go off every 15 minutes all night long. The hotel does not provide you with ear plugs. Please take this into consideration if you're a light sleeper.

Room Tip: For over $400/night, my husband and I were placed in two different rooms during our week long stay a...

We didn't stay here but found ourselves coming back repeatedly for a margarita at the cozy bar. Not the cheapest in town but very well made and interesting flavors such as tamarind, hibiscus, and one made from cactus fruit. Excellent service as well.
