We spoke long distance with the front desk at the time of reservation and was greeted by staff who seemingly understands English. What a surprise it was to find out when we got there the front desk staff were the only personnel at the hotel who could.
The rest of hotel staff does not speak English. There was virtually no help to guests who does not speak Spanish. We could not get any hotel service from our room after 10 p.m. because of the language barrier.
We requested for a quieter room at the time of booking. Unfortunately the hotel gave us the noisiest room in the place. The first two nights were pretty bad because our room was directly above the restaurant, the music from the restaurant was loud. The church bells started ringing at 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. After we changed to another room we finally got some sleep at night.
We were told that the hotel was fully booked but how strange to find we were the only people in the restaurant for breakfast for five out of six mornings. In the restaurant, the kitchen was not prepared to serve what was presented on the menu. The menu looks wonderful on paper but the kitchen just gave us whatever they have available at the time regardless of what we ordered, i.e. some kind of corn cake instead of toasts, diced packaged slice ham instead of bacon, saute mushroom and pimento (for breakfast?) instead of bacon, scrambled eggs was more like pulverized to powder, there were bacon one morning but it was raw mixed in with the eggs. There were no end to the breakfast follies, when we asked for our cafe lattes, each time is different because the espresso machine keeps breaking down. We could never really taste the espresso it was always so weak tasting that it was more like milk water. The hotel just did not care to make sure it won't happen again after the first, second, third time.........we were lucky we did not get sick from drinking their coffee concoctions.
We were in San Miguel de Allende purely to visit and sight see, there were so little help with information and directions, how to get from one point to another, etc., etc. we did not bother asking. Thank goodness we have our own navigational equipment with us.
We did not try have dinner at the hotel restaurant because nobody were there most of the time and it was not inviting.
After swimming in the hotel pool, two days after we returned to California, my wife ended up with ears and eyes infections. There is something unclean lurking in the pool.
We feel that American guests are not important to this hotel.
