“An oasis of calm in the French countryside”
Reviewed 24 November 2015 for a stay in September 2015

After a very pleasant overnight stay in Cognac we drove on to Lesignac Durand and to the 'French Cottage on the Charente Lake'. Lake? Yes, but not quite as it was a short time ago. Due to water shortages the upper part of the lake is now at a very much lower level than previously. However the lower part still remains full enough for liesure and watersport activities.
Very little of the longere type house can be seen from the road. You enter by a very short driveway and bear left and the full vista of the house opens before you. From right to left the end section of the house was under renovation. The next sections are storage sections then the owner's accommodation then the rental cottage and then another storage section. We understand that when the right hand end is completed that the owners will move to the end section so that both rental sections will be together.
Jim and Anna Dent were fully engrossed in the building work on our arrival but the welcome was totally warm and genuine. After the welcome Anna showed us around the cottage. It was spotlessly clean, well provisioned and we were touched by Anna's welcome pack of bread, butter, milk, jam and several bottles of wine. A very kind gesture.

Stepping outside through the double kitchen door revealed a very pleasant patio area with direct access to the above ground pool. We took a moment to listen to the surrounding noise, only there was none except the birds and Anna's chickens when they came to visit
It would be very difficult to find a more friendly and knowledgeable couple on the surrounding area and despite them both working very hard with the renovations they always had time for a chat and to tell us about the work they had done to the property.

The cottage furnishings were simple, comfortable and perfect for the surroundings. The bed was very comfortable and it was very enjoyable watching the sun rise through the trees first thing in the morning. As a return for their welcome it was only fitting that we should ask if there was anything that we could get for them on our trips out. We were more than happy to do so when something was needed. The nearest town is Chabanais with a good range of shops and a 'Super U' hypermarket on the outskirts. There is a small outdoor fresh food market held every Thursday close to the bridge which spans the Vienne River. Other towns within easy reach (by car) are Rochechouart,Confolens and St Junien with its nearby neighbour the Martyr Village of Oradour-sur-Glane.

Anna almost apologised for the cooler weather. It was still 23-25 degrees and very pleasant for sunbathing. The pool had cooled a little too but was still very acceptable for the slightly more hardy. With the still-warm days came the cooler nights. The large wood-burner was a joy to use with trips as required to the log store at the left hand end of the house.

All in all a wonderful holiday with perfect hosts and accommodation in a wonderful location. This was rounded off by an enjoyable drive through the French countryside back to St Malo, deliberately staying off the motorways. We send out thanks in full measure to Anna and Jim for such a wonderful holiday and wish them all the very best for the next stage of the house development.

“Relaxing, refreshing get-away in a beautiful area with friendly, welcoming hosts”
Reviewed 20 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Anna and Jim provided a wonderful welcome and ongoing support during our two week stay here. The Gite is spacious, comfortable and in a beautiful spot. The weather was glorious, the garden large and the pool very refreshing during the hot weather.
Anna and Jim provided a lot of advice regarding restaurants, local trips, 'vide grenier', etc., and we're very accommodating in dealing with our needs when our son, daughter-in-law and grandson arrived to stay.
I would happily recommend this Gite for anyone looking for a 'get-away' place to stay in a beautiful area of France.

“Utterly relaxed”
Reviewed 8 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

If you really want to get away from it all then Pine Cottages is for you. In the middle of France and driving distance from Limoges and Angouleme these cottages are embedded in the heart of rural France. The property is in access of Charente lake which is peaceful where you can enjoy walking, cycling and boating. The lake has two beaches which do have some facilities. The nearest town of Cabañas has a range of shops and a supermarket as you would expect in a rural commune of this type. The area of Lesignac-Durand is on the trail that Richard the Lion Heart took and this is signposted throughout. Exploring the trail you are very likely come across some of the most exquisite chapels and ancient church's, which by the way are always open. Truly beautiful. If you do want to explore further afield or you don't cycle then a car is essential. The gite is wonderful and includes English television if that's your thing. The pool is great to cool off in and just relax and the cats and chickens are entertaining in themselves. If you don't want to miss your days be sure to set your alarm as there is nothing to wake you up. Lastly Jim and Anna have a wealth of knowledge about the area and what is and isn't open within this area of France and are sure to give you a warm welcome.

“Glorious Gallic Retreat!”
Reviewed 4 May 2015 for a stay in April 2015

From the moment we arrived, our hosts, Anna and Jim, did their utmost to ensure we had a wonderful holiday. Their local knowledge was invaluable in informing our itinerary and their tips on everything from bike tracks to food shopping and identifying local wildlife was priceless.

The area of Lesignac-Durand/Charente is truly one of France's hidden gems; covered in tiny villages, which themselves often feature beautiful medieval buildings, and picturesque water-courses. The roads were very quiet and to hear to two cars in quick succession was very rare from our Pine Cottages base, and we must have heard just 4 throughout our entire stay.

By car you can get to the likes of Lesignac and Chabinais in around 10 minutes; from here you can buy food, fill up on petrol and quickly hop onto the N141 where it will then take you around 30 minutes to get to Limoges (home of one of the most beautiful cathedrals we've seen) and Angouleme (with its fine historical quarter).

Rochechouart is a fantastic town; the crater was an interesting, if unexpected discovery and the Hotel France was an unmissable eatery. Again, very close to Pine Cottages, given it was around a 15 minute car journey.

Anyway, we're certainly going to return, there is just so much to the region, to explore and discover and with Anna and Jim's excellent hosting skills (as well as that superb log fire) and excellent location, roll on our next visit!

“sunshine, good views, wildlife and sunsets”
Reviewed 22 December 2014 for a stay in September 2014

We flew to Limoges which is a very small and pleasant airport and picked up a hire car. The gite is only about half an hours easy drive away. We spent a very enjoyable week visiting many places of interest whilst staying on Lac de Lavaud. The gite was very comfortable and well equiped (especially with the Sky tv channels), It was great to cycle around the lanes on the bicycles that were free to use.
Anna and Jim made us very welcome and were to happy to advise on places to visit, places to shop and places to eat,
it was great and we will be back.
We would recommend that any visitors take or hire a car as there is much to see and do.

“Relaxing and tranquil with close access to many interesting places to visit”
Reviewed 22 December 2014 for a stay in September 2014

We spent a long weekend at Jim and Anna's. They are a very welcoming couple who are happy to advise on places to visit and are available if you need them. We spent our time walking by the lake, cycling around the lanes and swimmimg in the pool. Good restaurants within the local area meant that we ate well and we felt very relaxed after our weekend.
