“Let down at the end of our Simpson Crossing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

We planned to celebrate having crossed the Simpson from Birdsville. Planned on sitting back in the Bar and enjoying a few ales. The reception provided by the owner and his partner was less than enthusiastic. The meals were nice but you had to pre order and make sure you were back in the Bar by 6.30....which we did. Meals didn't arrive until 7.30 so not sure why you had to be there so early. There were signs everywhere telling you what "NOT" to do. Their loss really, we ended up having our own cold ales instead of investing in their bar. There was a gentleman working there with a long grey beard, he was most helpful in getting information about road conditions and made us feel welcome, couldn't say the same for the owners. I wouldn't bother going out of our way to Mount Dare when we next travel up that way.

Unfortunately i had broken down and was awaiting a tow back to alice springs but for the 4 days i was there the staff couldn't have been more helpfull. the pub itself was clean and served good meals and plenty of drinks. stayed in cabin which was tidy. showers were hot if you got there early and toilets clean. when you are in this environment you can't expect 5 star service and facilities. this pub is the final stop before crossing the simpson desert so it is just a fuel and overnight stop prior to just crossing the desert or coming off it.

Room Tip: sleep in your own tent

We stayed in the campground during our month long desert camping trip. This is an isolated position but very important especially for people setting out to cross the Simpson. The camp ground was dusty and showing signs of recent wet conditions. The shower/toilet facilities were as you would expect in a position so far from a major town. They needed some attention. The hotel provided basi meals that were fine for where we were. The fesh bread cooked on site was a treat after camping on the road some days.It is the type of place you expect in the outback. It could be better but if you dont like the place you should not be in the area.Well done Mt Dare we need places like yours.

Mount Dare is seriously remote. The nearest town is Oodnadatta (not really a town) and the corner milk bar is Alice Springs about 350km away, most over very rugged tracks. We were therefore not expecting anything very flash.

We were very pleasantly surprised by a friendly, high quality bush pub with excellent hearty food and good wines and beers.

Breakfast was hearty and we were able to source all supplies for our trip.

As we expected in such a remote location, the supplies were not cheap but accommodation was very reasonably priced.

We were offered varied accommodation options and took a two bedroom/ensuite cabin, similar to those often found in mine sites. This was comfortable, clean and fitted with firm, warm beds.

The staff and owner were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in planning the next legs of our trip. As we were travelling in an SUV with restricted road clearance, we found their guidance very helpful. A warning that the road from Mount Dare to Dalhousie Springs is extremely rocky and higher clearance vehicles would be preferable.

A definite must visit if travelling off the beaten track

We stayed in a room in the old house. There were only shared bathroom and toilet facilities that was in need of some maintenance. The pub and meals were good. She tries her best and the steak was great. Fuel is available. The room was not bad but the bathroom was not good.

Room Tip: You have to take what you get, there are not many options.

If you are realistic, don't go seeking five star accommodation in the outback. But if you need a hot shower after days of camping - this is the place. The showers offer plentiful hot water and the toilets are clean. Fuel is available, but be prepared to get in line if you turn up during winter school holidays. Food is bush pub style or take away; most people are grateful to find such a place after days of isolation in the bush.

Room Tip: Camp here rather than Dalhousie - camping grounds are better and Mount Dare has hot showers.

We were very disappointed with this pub, there was no atmosphere what so ever, the staff (including the owner) were not interested in talking to us even though we were sitting at the bar and there was virtually no one else there. The menu for dinner consisted of three choices and you had to pre-order (not sure why)....also the pub closes at 9pm...If you are looking for an outback pub experience then this is NOT the place to go.
