“Misleading website!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2010

We stayed here some months ago, and have been meaning to write a review for a while now.

I found the website led me to a false sense of high expectation with this hotel. I was disappointed. The hotel is in need of some love, but the owners are very accommodating. It really depends on what you want from your stay. For me not having paper thin Walls so you can hear the neighbours going to the loo at 3am is high on the priority list.

Nothing really wrong, friendly and great breakfast, but room felt like a boarding house. Cheap carpets. Grey Lino bathroom. Tiny tv with poor reception. Cost double what it should have in my opinion.

BULSTONE, Owner at The Bulstone Hotel, responded to this review, 28 July 2010
We are told that we offer good value for money all our accomodation is in 2 bedroom suites with full bathroom. Hotel facilities are as stated on web sites and we have just had our AA inspection and have an increased score especially for food. What is expected to be offered for breakfast other than choices of cereal, fruit, juice, yogurt, full english breakfast....
the bathrooms have non slipfloors especially designed to prevent accidents and to be hygenic unlike in a private home where carpets do tend to be the norm. Carpets in the hotel are good quality in the main Axminster and are upgraded as necessary, we are waiting the delivery of anew stair carpet.
I feel that the complainant had booked the wrong place we are very rural and does not appeal to those who prefer town life. No mention has been made of the fact that we accomodated a late arrival .

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2010

I had to go to Devon on business for one night and decided to take the family to make it a mini-holiday. We wanted to find a hotel that would make a stay with our two children (aged 3 and a half and 16 months) as comfortable as possible - we didn't really want to have them sleeping in our room and therefore have to all go to bed at 7pm!

The Bulstone looked ideal as the suites comprised two bedrooms and a bathroom in a self-contained unit, and offered children's tea at 5 and grown-ups' dinner at 8 - a treat for us to eat together as a couple! The hotel lived up to all our expectations and even exceeded them in some areas.

We had a friendly welcome from Judith, and our children immediately legged it to the playroom, where they loved the slides, playhouse, dolls, trains and many other toys. (I think the bigger slide and the playhouse are destined for the garden in the warmer weather but our two made the most of them being indoors!).

We had mentioned when we booked that we were all vegetarian, and were really touched that when we arrived, Judith presented a whole menu just for us, with 4 veggie choices for the grown-ups and 2 for the children - more than you get in most restaurants!

Our rooms were all clean and comfortably furnished, with bunk-beds and a cot in the children's room. It was brilliant being self-contained within a suite yet having a separate room from the children.

The children's tea was a relaxed meal. We were impressed that Judith provided everything from bibs to plastic bowls, spoons and beakers - nothing had been left out. The main meal was served, and a selection of desserts and drinks was provided for us to choose from afterwards. The children enjoyed watching the fish in the aquarium while they ate!

Another benefit is that the playroom is located next to the dining room, with windows between, so we could play until tea was ready.

The children were exhausted after an afternoon at Bicton Park (highly recommended) before we arrived at the hotel, so they went to sleep easily and we looked forward to our grown-up dinner!

A baby-listening service is provided, which allowed us to enjoy our meal without worrying about the children. The food itself was excellent. We both have big appetites, and we weren't disappointed in terms of either quality or quantity! Kevin and Judith clearly take pride in their cooking, and this was much appreciated.

A guests' kitchen is also provided, complete with fridge, freezer, clingfilm and most other things you need to make a picnic lunch or provide for small children.

The service was faultless. Kevin and Judith were very welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. They went out of their way to ensure that our stay with them was enjoyable, and Kevin provided useful advice about travelling to my meeting the following day.

We would definitely return to this hotel and would not hesitate to recommend it to other families with young children. Our 3 year-old cried when we left and asked why we couldn't live there! We were very impressed at the little details which made it so child-friendly, such as the guest kitchen and non-slip mats in the bathroom. Thanks Judith and Kevin for a lovely stay, we will be back!

With 7 of us in the party, including two young children - we booked the Bulstone's Christmas package, staying a total of 5 nights. The owners, Judith and Kevin, could not do enough to ensure we had a memorable stay. The hotel is very homely and comfortable and Judith's cooking is both interesting and varied. The only criticsm, if you can call it that, is we all put on weight as a result of our stay!!

The hotel really is unpretentious and geared to young children with an excellent playroom and outside facilities. The children's food is also freshly prepared and healthy.

Strongly recommend this hotel for families with young children who want a really relaxing holiday.

My main motivation for posting a negative review is my fear that some family might book this for their main holiday of the year, spending loads of money (it's not cheap - £110 a night) only to be very disappointed.

The outside of the building is very grubby and inside feels a bit tatty and unloved. We wanted somewhere child friendly and although the kids liked having toys to play with, I have to say the playroom was grubby and dingy and the toys had a bric a brac/car boot sale feel. I even found a slug making it's way across the playroom floor, having earlier seen tiny pre-crawling babies mouthing the carpet - yuk!

When you've got kids it is really good to have a 'suite' with two separate bedrooms, so this was the hotel's real plus point. The decor of the room was fine - 2 star standard - and the bed linen nice. TV with freeview another good thing so the kids could watch cBeebies. HOWEVER the bathroom was really not clean. Grubby, gritty surfaces on the bath and sink, and I found at least eight hairs in the bath and on the towels. I definitely did not want to walk in there with bare feet.

Breakfast was a basic selection, and what we had was fine, but we didn't want to risk any of the cooked food as we worried a little about hygiene.

We've never met hoteliers like the owners of Bulstone. I'm sure they're nice people but they just didn't seem very friendly or open, and came across as a bit abrasive. This hotel is such a missed opportunity. The position is good, near various attractions, and the concept - family suites, a playroom, a kitchen to do your own baby milk, etc. - is one that we and other families are always looking for. It would take a lot of money to lift it from its current state, but it could be great. I don't mind hotels of a basic standard but I cannot bear to stay somewhere dirty, especially with young children. Thank goodness we were only staying one night.

BULSTONE, Owner at The Bulstone Hotel, responded to this review, 27 August 2011
A late response to this review but it needs to be on line and viewed The Hotel is constantly being updated inside and out . in the last 6 months in excess of £ 4000 . 00 If the guest had complained at once issues especially bathrooms are dealt with immediately . Breakfast offers cereal fruit yogurt croissants as well as cooked breakfast comments on hygiene wrong we hold a 5 star hygiene certificate and all our food is cooked to order. The AA are happy with our levels of service and when guests are only with us for 1 night it is difficult to become aquainted especially at breakfast when everyone is wanting to chat about their day. We do clean daily and guests must bear in mind they are not the only ones present. The playroom is well used and new toys are constantly being bought, but parents seem not to care and toys are destroyed or damaged within days or sometimes even hours .

On arrival the hotel does look run downand is a rated at two star qulaity, rooms are disapointing. Granny and I stood looking worriedly at each other in the car park whilst the men braved first encounter.

What makes it so family friendly though is the baby monitoring, large play room and early childrens tea (and high tea for adults). The children enjoyed being surrounded by different children of different agas on a daily basis.

If you can get past to tired setting without being too snooty you will be rewarded with excellent adult meals and happy children. They also made a big effort to feed the children well and made special trips to fishmongers etc.

We stayed for five nights and ate too much daily - but hey we were on holiday.

The proprieters are as you find them, individuals, no flannel and enthusiastic about food. How boring life would be if we were all the same.

This is a wonderful hotel which in my opinion is ideal for families as it specialises in having families with children. This takes the presure off you worrying about your child crying and disrupting people who are also in the hotel as everyone else also has children. So you don't have to worry if the child is slightly noisy. The food for both the childrens tea and the adults dinner is lovely. The food is freshly prepared every day and the menu changes daily (and included duck, fish pie and rack of lamb) but the list is endless. The wine list has also been carefully chosen and contains a good range of world wines including a couple of nice English whites.
The toy room and the garden enable the children to play and explore in a safe environment and to interact with any other children staying at the hotel. This of course also means that the kids have somewhere to play whatever the British weather throws at us.
This is not a stuffy 4 or 5 star hotel where children are not allowed to be seen or heard. It is a small family run hotel where the owners will endeavour to ensure that your stay is as good as it can be.
