“Please get a potato peeler and stop cutting corners”
Reviewed 28 February 2014

Just stopped in for a pint and lunch as we have done on many occasions before. Good beers, nice atmosphere and usually quite good food, spoiled this time by the provision of horrible frozen, extruded mashed-potato-style chips. Has the Masons not hear of a potato peeler??? Lazy cheffing.

We had Room 1, it was very clean. However, it was a very cold night and extremely windy and as old, single glass windows was very very noisy and the draft made the room cold and the curtains move, so wasn't a good sleep. The evening meal was very nice, although they have made the most of there being nowhere else to eat nearby by having very high prices. Atmosphere in pub was very nice though, with a lovely fire. Breakfast was the worst I have had in a B&B, it had obviously been warmed up as was dry, hard and chewy and I couldn't eat it. So I am sorry but for this reason I wouldn't stay there again, but if in area would pop in for a drink.

We spent last weekend here - we are frequent visitors. The weather was lousy but it did not matter. The bar is as cosy as ever, with the fire roaring away all day and the staff were uniformly friendly. Food very good as always. We had to have a small room but as it was a bargain winter price, we have no complaints. Room number was 28: small but this did not matter. It had all the usual amenities, a good shower, even a very small bath. Excellent breakfast. Very dog friendly!

Room Tip: The cottage rooms are bigger and smarter and you can sit outside on your private patio enjoying the...

My wife and I booked in for a three night stay at the Masons Arms and stayed in room 9 which was amazing in everything it had to offer including the best power shower we have ever experienced. The staff, the breakfast, the meals in the evening and a wonderful friendly atmosphere in the bar made this mini-break a very welcome tonic for us after suffering a recent family loss. A definite 10 out of 10 from us.

Room Tip: Room 9 was fantastic, it was the end of January and as you would expect it was cold, wet and windy o...

I booked the Masons Arms as a suprise Christmas present for my wife because I spent a milestone birthday there 4 years ago and it was a first class experience with a very friendly landlord. Like all these things if your break goes well you give a high rating and even if you stay doesn't go so well you may still offer a high rating if your complaint is is handled correctly. We booked a Superior room but were suprised to find that the room and particularly the bathroom ( which was in need of a refurb) was not cleaned to a very high standard. I took this up with the receptionist and the room was re-cleaned, again not to a very high standard. I was told that the housekeeper had recently left but no excuse. We were offered a small discount and after a further complaint they gave us 1 of the 2 nights free. The manager who I understand was available did not once come to us and apologise which would have made all the difference. On a positive note the staff were very friendly and the food and beer was very good

Stayed for 2 nights in January 2014. Really lovely place to stay. Made to feel welcome and had a comfortable room with a Super King bed as I requested a big bed as my husband is over 1.91 metres tall.
Had a delicious meal on the Friday and enjoyed the breakfasts as it kept you going all day until the evening.
We were able to do our walk from Beer and back to our place of stay. Picked the right day to do this as on the Sunday it was windy and raining.
Would love to return again in the year. I'm sure we will
We stayed in room 24 and our friends were in the Cottages in room 6.
Thank you to the staff for great service.

We have just come back from a 2 night stay at The Masons Arms in Branscombe, we were hunting my ancestors!
We satnav'ed from Essex to this ShangriLa type haven called Branscombe and there was our ideal picture postcard pub/hotel in the middle on the village. We stayed in one of the converted cottages on the other side of the car park and were impressed with the decor and quietness. Food was excellent (fish and chips were superb!) and the moules et frites were classic. Staff made a huge difference by being responsive and on the ball, service we very good and the public area had a huge fire. Ale was good and our MALBAC was yummy!. Location in the valley is good with a 20 minute walk to the pebble beach. Like McArthur "we will return" Compliments to the chef also!

Room Tip: We chose a cottage away from the pub (they are Grade2 listed)
