We have eaten here a few times after discovering it at the beginning of the year. The food has always been good. The service is excellent and the ambiance great.

“Lovely pub.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2014 via mobile

We went for dinner here last month. The food was great, typical pub grub, nothing fancy but good home cooked food, plenty of it and very good value. Will be returning to try their sunday lunch very soon.

“Excellent vegetarian option”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 December 2013

We visited in Late July. The food was excellent. We all had the vegetarian burger, in most places this would mean a dried out bean burger but we were brave and went with it. So glad we did, a moist delicious mozzarella based burger, served with a small preserving jar of chutney, a side salad and beautiful chips. We also had onion rings which were the best any of us have ever tasted. The presentation on a board with everything laid out was lovely too. The ice cream for pud was good. Would highly recommend.

“Great flying visit on the way to the ferry”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 November 2013

We used to stop at the Sun Inn, Rake - to have an evening meal before taking the ferry to France but found it boarded up. The Flying Bull was open and the lass running the bar gave us a warm welcome. That said, we were 30 mins before the 6.00 pm threshold for serving food. On the basis of the warm welcome and the lovely log fire we decided to have a glass of wine - good quality but a little pricey (probably not for the local clientele!). A good range of food, including specials, was on offer and whilst deciding whether to eat the chef came on duty (joint owner we believe) with a sort of reluctant air about serving food close to the 6.00 pm envelope. This reluctance nearly made us go elsewhere, especially when we asked for a jacket potato - with the response that they are normally served at lunchtime and may not be available. We were just reaching for the car keys when it was confirmed that the JP's were in stock - so we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt - and were glad we did!

We ordered faggots and mash (much more glamorous than it sounds) and crayfish salad with JP. Both were excellent - good price and portions. The JP was almost as good as our Mum's - which are outstanding. Service was cheerful, attentive and engaging. We soon found out that the joint owners had two Vizslas (Hungarian Gun Dogs) - and we have one at our home in France - called Jazz. The two dogs were brought down to the bar/restaurant after our plates were cleared and they were delightful.

We did not stay overnight in the B&B but if the attention to detail in the bar, restaurant and toilets is anything to go by, the B&B facilities will be great.

If we pass this way again we will definitely stop again, certainly for a meal, the ambiance and the Vizslas!
