“Luxury all the way in Cabo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2011

Montecristo is a collection of luxury villas on the hill high above the Pueblo Bonito Sunset and Pacifica resorts. I believe they are all two story, three bedroom units with sleeper sofas upstairs and down. The finishes are all top notch and each has its own mini-infinity edge swimming pool plus a hot tub. Room service is available from the Sunset Beach Resort. Spa treatments at these resorts are available but are very expensive even by American resort standards.

Daily maid service, gated entry and great views of the Pacific made this truly a memorable week in paradise. They offer shuttle service (every 20 minutes) down to the resorts where you can use their facilities and once an hour to their sister resort in Cabo (we didn't use that as we had a car). The facilities at Monte Cristo are limited to a gym, a very pleasant pool area and a sports bar.

I had read somewhere that golf was available at these resorts. It is not as the course construction in behind schedule (hey, it is Mexico) and the course is now scheduled to open in 2013 as an 18 hole layout, not the 36 as originally planned. There are two phases to Montecristo, the newer phase is lower on the hill, making it closer to the resorts but also providing a less dramatic view. Any of these units will create a vacation that you will remember for ever.

We just returned from a week in Villa 31 and had a wonderful time! The villas are beautiful and well thought out and having our own pool as well as access to the other PB properties was amazing.

They've recently opened a new clubhouse with a seamless check in area, sports bar, pool, and great fitness center. Our other villa stays we're at Esperanza and Wailea Beach Villas, both of which run over $2500/nt, so we did our best not to compare Monte Cristo to these properties as we found the villa online for $1800/wk. As expected, the details fell short of these properties (linens, bbq, kitchen appointments, etc.) but it was still very nice and we would definitely return.

We rented a car for the week which is the only way to go. You can rent a nice car for about $150/wk online which I'm not sure would cover even the airport transfers, so not only was it a great convenience but also saved us quite a bit of money over the course of the week and eliminated the hassle of the golf carts.

Our only complaint about the MC would be the roach problem... I realize that we're in the tropics and finding a dead roach or two during your stay is to be expected, but we found over a dozen dead in our villa including 6 one day! I talked to management and they seemed shocked but apparently did nothing as the problem persisted and they offered us nothing for our trouble. By the end of the trip I would get up and scour the house and clear the dead bodies before my wife ventured out of the bed. Again, details that would have been addressed at other properties.

All in all, a wonderful property and a great value.

Room Tip: Scour the internet for deals as vacancy is high!

We have stayed at 6 resorts in Cabo (Las Ventanas, Sunset Beach, The Pacifica, the Melia, The Blanco, and Montecristo)

The villas at Montecristo are Exceptional. They are spacious with private pools and breathtaking views of the Pacific. You will enjoy the constant breeze. Housekeeping does a great job keeping it clean, especially given the size of the villas.

Getting around is a bit tough, as it is set up on a mountainside. I often walked to Pacifica for spa services or to the other pools at Sunset Beach, because I didn't want to wait for a cart. They arranged for us to be picked up from the airport in two large Suburbans. They have an Avis on the property, so we rented a Suburban for the day to go to Todos Santos.

I recommend taking the day to use the zip lines. Montecristo will set up activities for you.

Just returned from our first stay at MonteCristo. We have owned at Sunset for several years and have loved it, and just upgraded to MonteCristo Phase 2. We brought along another family, for a total of 4 adults and 4 children, and there was plenty of room. The weather was picture -perfect, though the nights were chillier on the mountain than below at Sunset. We had an awesome time, and our only complaint was that there was construction going on below, so if we stayed at home during the day, it was noisy. Since we had 8-11 yr olds, we spent most of the time at the pools at Sunset, anda few days at Rose and Blanco, so the noise wasn't a huge issue, but if we had opted to stay in the home the whole time, we would have asked to be moved (which they were willing to do). We never had a problem getting 8 chairs at the pools, except for the main pool which fills up pretty quickly. We also found that having a car was almost a necessity, and more cost effective than a taxi. Best value for food was at Walmart which was a short drive downtown, and saved us a bundle since in previous years we ate out every night. We have already booked our trip for next year--can't wait!

We had a great time in Cabo. Monticristo did not have our reservation and blamed it on Registry Collection who said it was Monticristo's fault - they tend to be a little "flexible" in their responses. The villa was great, although it needed some updated (as compared to Monticristo II). We took a friend with us and she really enjoyed the downstairs to herself.
Unfortunatly, we left our swimsuits in the dryer and called back the same day we checked out. I've called a few times and sent emails but no luck.

We would definitely go back!!

In my opinion, Montecristo is a mixed bag. Montecristo is a collection of villas that are part of a large development by Pueblo Bonito. The main buildings are Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, which is a large village of timeshare condos. Montecristo Phase I villas are high up on the hill, making them remote but giving them excellent views. Montecristo Phase II is a bit lower.

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach: this is a nice looking development with many pool areas, several restaurants, and a spa, all of which are accessible to the residents of Montecristo. Food in the restaurants is good and surprisingly reasonably-priced. Service is universally slow in the restaurants. The pool areas are attractive, but they can be crowded and expect little to no service. The major positive is that the pools are nice and warm. This property is built-up on a hill, so they have lots of gas-powered golf carts zipping people around the property. The smell of gas fumes in the air gets old.

Immediately upon check-in you will be hounded to take the time share tour. The employees get points if they are able to sign you up for the tour, so expect constant badgering, especially when in the main resort. We did the tour so that we could familiarize ourselves with the property and to get the $200 in food credits and $100 in spa credits. The tour, which included breakfast, took about 2 hours. All I have to say is that the timeshares here are dramatically over-priced. Units can be bought for much less on the secondary market. If you do consider buying, I suggest doing your homework first because many other companies offer a much better value. I also understand that development has come to a halt. They have been talking about the construction of golf courses for years, but nothing has happened. They have also been talking about a market in the compound for years, but apparently that has stalled, too.

The property is located just west of Cabo San Lucas. The location is very nice. Instead of paying a lot of money for airport transportation and local cabs, I highly recommend that you simply rent a car. We were glad that we did.

Montecristo's units are located on the hill, so you will either need to wait for the shuttle or drive your own car to get anywhere. We are big walkers, but walking this mountain was just not in the cards. Having to drive to everything gets old. The trade off is that the view from the villas is incredible.

I was disappointed upon check-in. Check-in is located in what looks like a converted villa...not a welcoming reception area. The people were ok...not rude, nor overly helpful.

The villa itself is very nice. The major perks are the private infinity pool (very warm water!), jacuzzi, grill, computer located in the room, and free internet. The units have a washer and dryer, but you need your own detergent. The beds are not very comfortable. They are rather lumpy. The showers are good. The kitchen is nice and more than adequate. Daily housekeeping service is provided. Overall, the villa is excellent.

What lacks at Montecristo is the service. It is affiliated with what I would classify a 3-4 star property. Service at Montecristo is no better. Call to ask for something and you'll be lucky to get an answer or even a call back.

We had villa #20, attached to which is a staff area and bathroom. So, while sitting by the pool you will hear the employees talking, laughing and making noise...not relaxing!

So, who should travel here? If you tend to be easy-going, you will absolutely love the villa and may not notice the poor service. If you are accustomed to high-end service, you will definitely be disappointed.

I give this property 5 stars for the view and for the amenities provided by the villa, 2 stars for the service, 1 star for having to deal with the shuttles, 1 star for being harassed by the time share folks, and three stars for the neighboring property. On balance, I give it a 3.

Other thoughts: the beach is beautiful, but you cannot swim in the water at Sunset Beach due to dangerous conditions. You can swim in the beach at Pueblo Bonito's other properties in Cabo (Rose and Cabo San Lucas), both of which are older properties. You are able to sign meals at these properties to your room.

There is a Costco is Cabo, so that is a good option if you'd like to stock up on food to cook yourself.

My family comes here every year and stays for 15 days. It's absolutely beautiful. They're HUGE homes built high in the mountains with a fabulous view of the Pacific Ocean. It comes complete with 2 levels, 3-4 bedrooms, huge baths with walk-in closets and, gourmet kitchen, our door grill and large private pool. Maid service and twice per day and the pool boy comes by daily to clean/service the pool and jacuzzi. 2+ car garages, desktop computer with free internet connection and endless amenities. It feels so much like home we keep coming back. The kids and adults love the peace and quiet of being on this side and heading into Medano Beach or downtown to jetski, parasail, other beach activities and nightlife. Great for large groups as the houses can easily accommodate 8 to 2 people easily. You must try this place if you're ever in Cabo and want to have a remarkable and unique place to stay. Can't go wrong.
