“Wonderful hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014 via mobile

Upon arriving I seen the construction going on & had NO clue! I got really nervous & thought I'd made a huge mistake. When we got to our room & seen the rest of the resort my worries were then put to rest! Staff was super hospitable & very friendly. We never heard any of the construction noise going on until we were either leaving the resort or returning. During our stay it never bothered us. The restaurant La Roca was ok. The menu changes daily & it is pretty expensive to eat there, especially for a family of five! And just for being okay dishes, we decided by our 3rd day it was time to eat elsewhere outside the hotel for dinner. As for everything thing else, we were very happy with our stay at the Grand Solmar.

My wife and I spent a week at the Grand Solmar Land's End in July 2014. We absolutely loved this vacation. Compared to the several Caribbean islands and places on Mexico's Atlantic coast that we have previously vacationed, this was far better. The property is amazing with spectacular vistas of the Pacific ocean and the Land's End rock formations. The rooms are spacious, clean, and well appointed - our room, which was the smallest available, was over 700 square feet with a king bed and a murphy pull out. The service was outstanding indeed probably as good or better than any we've seen before - Gerardo at the Bar Brisas and Eben at the lobby bar were particularly great. The food is good but not outstanding, better than your typical all-inclusive (e.g. Secrets) but certainly there are better places in down-town Cabo, but for breakfast and lunch at the pool it's a good option. The rooms have at minimum a kitchenette (range top, microwave, refrigerator) so cooking is an option . We choose the all-inclusive option which included all meals and drinks - note alcohol is included but not top-shelf alcohol so for example Absolut and Don Julio were included but Grey Goose and Patron were not. The paperwork for the all-inclusive is less than clear so ask if what you're ordering is included. The plan is worth the cost if you're going to have several (>=4) drinks a day and at least eat breakfast and lunch at the hotel. Be aware there is construction on going, but for our visit at least, it wasn't an issue. The only negative I can say about the property is that they will try to get you to sign up for a time share tour when you arrive but this is easily ignored. Overall, we loved it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the construction.

Dear Amasino

Thank you for loving the place in general, our rooms, the service, the location, Eben from the bar
and Gerardo are particular pleased with your comments, Thank you for mentioning them.
Our Chef HEctor is always looking for new ideas and at the moment he is improving the dinning options, so good becomes oustanding. Thank you for your mention on this. I am a believer that the meal plan option is wirth it for guest that want to stay at the resort and just relax. The alcohol that we use at the resort is really good as you mention and of great quality. Also our front staff have the list of what is included so you can choose if you want to be part of it. The timeshare meeting is optional, and i am very pleased that you also consider that the construction did not spoil anything of your vacation. As i mention before is just at the entrance of the hotel and hard to hear.

Thank you again!

After spending one week at the Playa Grande we moved to the Grand Solmar. The atmosphere is different from the sister resort but totally terrific. The check in staff were great in trying to get us into our room and offer us ways to "use up the time' in comfort.
The pacific is so lovely just to watch. Dining outside at La Roca is enchanting. The food is grand and the view outstanding. The staff was terrific.
We stayed in a one bedroom which was kept so clean and organized by the housekeeping staff each day of our visit. I love being able to make breakfast in the room so when I realized the toaster didn't work they went immediately go get me another one. Everything went smoothly.
The construction didn't get in our way at all. They have the parts being worked upon behind plywood walls in hopes that they don't disrupt the feeling of your vacation and enjoyment. I was impressed at the extra attention given to maintain the atmosphere of the resort in spite of the construction.
We enjoy the walk to the marina and downtown although in the middle of the day it was hot.
One thing I wanted to mention but not affect the rating is the bad food experience at the Don Luis restaurant on the property. It seemed that the desire to make things lovely was more important than being sure that the taste of the foods were great. We attended a Grill Night there. It was on the advertisements as being at the La Roca but when we went down we were directed to the Don Luis. One of our party had to send their dish back because it had been burnt. I had ordered the same item but mine was correctly prepared. Another had shrimp but they had been overcooked also.
I am looking forward to returning to the Grand Solmar when the construction is complete. I can't imagine it getting better!

I was extremely surprised when I arrived at the Grand Solmar. I have a timeshare and exchanged it for this resort since my husband wanted to go to Cabo. My experiences with timeshares is that most resort/hotels you stay at are mediocre. This place was absolutely beautiful with a great location. You had the view of the Pacific Ocean and the rocks throughout the resort. The resort was run like a hotel, with maid service everyday sometimes twice a day. We stayed in a one Bedroom which was very roomy with 2 baths overlooking the sunset pool and the ocean. It was a fantastic view! Everyone that worked there were very friendly, professional and helpful. Beware though of the timeshare sales people. They will try to get you the first day you are there but if you say no thanks they won't bother you again. Housekeeping is fantastic and the 6 pools are incredible. So relaxing and the sound of the crashing waves was so peaceful. The place is located very close to the Marina (10 minute walk) where you can find restaurants and shops. Overall I highly recommend Grand Solmar at Land's end. The pictures on its website on pretty dead on. You won't be disappointed.

At the end of the Baja Peninsula, a treasure that is well appointed, excellent service from the entire staff, but especially Roberto( Front VIP Desk), Freddy, Carlos and Cesar at the Pool Bar, Yasmin and Claudia at the La Roca and Manny at the front Greeter. These folks embody the apex of excellence.

Relaxing, fun, enjoyable, good food and recreation.

Take a taxi from the Airport $16 each one way. Get the ticket at the Taxi Window, after you pass through customs.

The all inclusive for the $99 a day covers everything from start to finish.

The town is within easy walking distance from the hotel. Great food at Alexander's and a few others. Plan about $30 a plate, but all fresh! Other watering holes are readily available and the service is fine and safe.

Plan a trip and you will be amazed

Room Tip: Have a room overlooking the pool, not the mountains. It has a greater breeze

We can't not say enough about the wonderful service we received from everyone, how we are made to feel special and like family.Want to especially acknowledge Sergio, who took care of us at the pool,Luis and Roberto at the La Roca,Dianna who kept our rooms in perfect condition and
Ebon at lobby bar who is the greatest! Although the two people I want to also make mention, actually work at the Play Grande, but our vacation would never be complete without Vilma and Victor in the lobby bar,the nicest people you'll ever meet. Also the food was excellant.Never had a bad meal in 2 weeks.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

To be honest, I wasn't very excited about going to Cabo San Lucas for summer vacation this year. My husband and I had visited years ago, and I had just never really wanted to return. However, due to various circumstances, I ended up booking a last minute timeshare exchange through Interval International to the Grand Solmar at Land's End. Much to our surprise, both the resort and the town completely exceeded our expectations. By the end of the very first day, my husband was already planning next year's vacation at the Grand Solmar.

However, that said, there are three deal breakers that potential visitors should be aware of:

1) There is ongoing construction of a new tower which will not be finished until at least August 2015. Work begins at least by 7-8 am and continues--except for a lunch break in the afternoon--well into the evening.

2) Cabo is known for "timeshare sharks." It was like this twenty years ago, and it is like this today. You will typically see them hanging out at the airport and at the marina. To be clear, the Grand Solmar is a timeshare resort, so you will be invited to attend a timeshare meeting when you arrive. I think you can get a meal and certain activity vouchers if you agree to attend. On the first day of our trip, my husband and I politely declined, and we were not bothered again.

3) The resort is located on the Pacific Ocean which is full of rip tides and strong currents. If you are looking for a resort where you can walk directly on to the beach to go for a swim, this really is not the place for you. However, keep in mind that the many infinity pools--which blur the line between pool, ocean, and sky--can easily make you forget about swimming in the sea.

With those three caveats aside, the rest of this review will consider those features which made the Grand Solmar a truly surprising vacation.

Location:
The Grand Solmar is tucked into the very tip of the Baja peninsula on Solmar Beach, with a craggy mountain to the east and the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean to the west. It is past the western edge of the Cabo San Lucas marina, up and over a rather steep hill. The resort gets the breezes off the Pacific, so it is much cooler than the marina, especially in June. The pounding surf--while not good for swimming--is perfect for lulling you to sleep each night. And the beach itself, although hard on the feet, is great for early morning/evening walks.

Layout:
The resort is roughly shaped like a capital letter "L", with a long series of buildings against the mountain and a shorter but taller building jutting out toward the beach. The point where the two lines of buildings converge is roughly where the new construction is taking place. This is also near the main entrance to the resort and the central Family Pool with the La Roca restaurant and main pool bar nearby. Thus, construction noise is audible throughout much of the central part of the resort during the day. However, if you are sensitive to this kind of sound, the Adult Pool and the Sunset Pool are located at the opposite ends of the property with intervening buildings to block out the work noise.

Grounds:
The Grand Solmar has a minimalist, modern look due to its use of white textured stone and raked desert landscaping. I don't think the online photos truly convey the luxuriousness and zen-like tranquility of the property. It's very calm, at least in June, and it's a nice retreat from the craziness of Cabo proper. One thing to note: because the resort uses artificial grass around the pool areas in order to conserve water, be sure to wear sandals in the middle of the day when the turf heats up.

Rooms:
Our II exchange was for a studio suite overlooking the construction area, but after our arrival we decided to upgrade to a one bedroom suite further away from the work zone. The suite was quite spacious with a full kitchen, dining area, living room, master bedroom, and two full bathrooms (very desirable when traveling with two teenagers). The kitchen is fully stocked with new appliances and granite counter tops; however, it lacks an oven and a dishwasher. No matter since we used it only to prepare small meals. Also, housekeeping will bring you a bag of ice since there is no ice making capabilities in the fridge.

The dining area has a large round table with heavy chairs, an armoire for clothes, and a pull-down murphy bed. Although my college-aged son did not comment on the quality of the bed itself, he did grumble a bit about having to sleep "in the kitchen."

In front of the large sliding door leading out to a spacious balcony, there is a small living room with a sofa, two chairs, and a flat screen tv. The large master bedroom is off of the living room with sliding barn doors separating the two rooms. While the doors are beautiful, they aren't completely sound proof--when I went to bed early, I could hear my kids watching movies late into the night.

Housekeeping/Laundry:
Unlike Marriott Vacation Villas, the Grand Solmar provides daily housekeeping services for no extra fee (other than tip!). In this sense, the resort is run more like a hotel. Also, each building has its own small room for self-laundry. But since the resort provides towel service at the pool areas, there's no need to wash towels each night like at some timeshare properties.

Dining:
Because there are so many decent restaurants in Cabo (such as Mi Casa, Koi Sushi, the Office, Mango Deck, Edith's), we opted not to participate in the all-inclusive package. That said, however, when we did order food and drinks by the pool it was rather pricy, even with the Happy Hour two-for-one drinks. Consequently, I think the all-inclusive package is actually a good deal if you are spending most of your time relaxing at the resort. We ate one night at La Roca, when the chef prepared a three-course meal from the tuna we had caught on our fishing excursion. The dinner was delicious but, as others have noted, the service was slow. Still, it's a treat to linger at a table listening to the surf crash on the beach and watching the sun set behind the mountains.

Service:
No matter how beautiful, a resort is only so good as its personnel. Usually we vacation at self-service Marriott properties, so I don't have a very high standard in this area. However, we thought the Grand Solmar was exceptional. If we called with a problem, they were quick to solve the issue. Day in and day out, it was obvious that the staff at the Grand Solmar was working tirelessly to ensure we had a fantastic vacation experience. To be sure, nothing is ever perfect, but the Grand Solmar gets pretty close.

Transportation:
The resort coordinates shuttle service to and from the airport for what seems like a reasonable fee. Taxis seemed to be waiting down the hill for a quick call to come up to the taxi stand and pick up guests. We rented a car through Cactus because we liked the freedom of driving to distant tourist spots such as Todos Santos and Chileno Beach. One thing though, you must be very careful when driving in town because jay-walking is quite acceptable in Cabo. And a final problem was that parking downtown or near the marina seemed virtually impossible, especially at night.

Walking:
Can you walk to the marina from the Grand Solmar? Yes, you can. The employees do it all of the time. But, be aware that it can be very hot in the middle of the day, at least in June. One of the things which convinced me to book the Grand Solmar was its seeming proximity to the marina; however, you must walk/shuttle down the hill past the construction zone to the sister resort, the Playa Grande, then ascend and descend a short steep hill. It's not a flat walk as I had assumed. At the bottom of this hill, you are at the western edge of the marina. To get to most of the restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shopping, etc., you must walk around the marina another 10 to 20 minutes depending on your destination. This is quite doable, especially if you like walking anyways. The walk along the marina is flat, well-lit, and feels safe even at 11 o'clock at night. However, if you have small children or, as in my case, a whiny teenage daughter, you might be better served with a taxi.

One Mistake:
One mistake I made was not bringing enough cash or traveler's checks to Cabo. The resort has a cashless system, and most tourist shops and restaurants accept credit cards; however, we burned through the cash we brought pretty quickly due to local restaurants, deep sea fishing, and water activities, not to mention the many well-earned tips. While pesos and USD are both acceptable, we just didn't plan enough. Before the end of the week we were forced to go to Banamex for more cash.

Final Thoughts:
I once read in a guidebook that some people are disappointed when they visit Cabo because it lacks a kind of Mexican authenticity. To me, that's like saying Las Vegas isn't the authentic southwest or that Fisherman's Wharf isn't the real SF. No, Cabo San Lucas is definitely a tourist town, but it's fun to experience the craziness of Cabo before heading back to the luxurious tranquility of the Grand Solmar. We were surprised by how much we enjoyed our vacation and are looking forward to returning sometime soon.

Dear TulipL0ver

We are delighted that we exceed your expectations. And is great to hear that after just one day your husband was already planning next year vacation. I believe your suggestions are very accurate, adn as you mention for us is always important to inform our guest of what is going on. At the momento the construction área is not by the pools, just at the entrance doing what will become the lobby of the resort and an amazing bar área. We hope they will finish the construction mid 2015. But as many guest mention, they hardly notice this as it is far from the restaurant, bar and many of our suites.

That you loved our location, layout, the grounds (we are in the process to change some of our pics on our website), the room in general, our housekeeping services, your dining experience (we will take notes on what you are mentioning about the service), that i am delighted you loved what our Chef prepare for you. I also recommend the meal plan package, as you will notice we have this option in case our guest feel we have high prices, that i can assured you we are in the media with the competition.

I agree with you in your message: No matter how beautiful, a resort is only so good as its personnel. That you mention that our service was exceptional is priceless to us.

Thank you for mentioning that we are a cash free resort (but we accept credit cards, or you can charge to your room), also no smoking at the pool áreas and romos is allowed.

I am sure a lot of people will find very interesting and helpful your comments in general.

Thank you again for sharing your experience. We will be waiting for you for your next vacation.

Sincerely,
