“Great views!!!”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We had a timeshare at this resort for 4 years. It is private (takes 3 elevators to get up there). Infinity pools with a view of the ocean and the marina. It is exclusive and there aren't too many kids. Very comfortable rooms and great service. Highly recommend!!!

Let me start by saying Playa Grande is a beautiful resort with all the amenities anyone could ask for!! Great staff: Concierges: Aldo and Noe, Bellman: Alejandro, Pool Waiters: Luis and Juan, Lobby Bar: Leonardo, Victor, Brigantine waitress: Zaira. The Mexican Fiesta and Beach Party should NOT be missed!! Also our cleaning ladies Carmelita and Olydia were great!

We arrived on 4/20 for what was supposed to be a week of peace and quiet in a penthouse suite(room 2451) as confirmed by RCI- on the Playa Grande side of the hotel. The room we were given- room 3345 on the Ridge- was beautiful and spacious on the inside, but loud and noisy outside on the patio(s) and the street below.
We asked multiple times to be moved, but we were told nothing "comparable" was available- we even offered to "downgrade" to get to the Playa- and still nothing. I don't want to bash such a beautiful resort, but I believe no effort was made by the front desk personnel to accommodate our modest request. Other than that- Our Trip Was Awesome!!

Room Tip: Avoid the lower buildings of the Ridge section- unless you enjoy street noise and don't plan on...

Stayed at the Ridge in a 1 bedroom in December 2013 with some girl friends.

The hotel is part of the Playa Grande resort, and there is no separate check-in desk for the Ridge, so we had to be dropped off at the Playa Grande main entrance. During check-in, before they would give us cards for beach towels, we had to listen to a sales pitch for time shares. They weren't so aggressive about it like I had heard from people about other hotels; Just said no thank you, and got the cards to pick up towels at the pool.

To get to the Ridge part of the resort was really confusing and far. The porter took us up the elevator, had to load our luggage in a golf cart to get to the other side of the resort, then had to take a set of elevators down to get to our room. The upside is that the Ridge is closer to the marina area and has a separate entrance only accessible to people staying at the Ridge.

The room itself was spacious and clean. There was a bedroom with an attached bath, a secondary bathroom with shower in the living room, and 2 fold out beds in the living area (1 double and 1 single bed). Didn't use the kitchen at all, but it was nice having a refrigerator for snacks and cold drinks. There was also a balcony that had a view of the marina, but it was right next to the parking lot. The room had breakfast included at the main restaurant next to the pool. Wifi, however, was not included, and had to pay extra to connect up to 3 devices.

We had a wonderful time at this resort. It was very clean and one of the nicer resorts I have stayed in (I travel a lot for business). The Ridge is the spot at this resort. Raciel, Flavio, Juan, Teo, Luis, Ismael and Jose at the Ridge Bar and Restaurant made the trip extra special. We found ourselves staying by the pools and bar more than we went into town... there was no reason to leave. If you see any of bartenders at the Ridge pool bar sporting a Seahawks hat, you know where they got them!

Room Tip: Stay at The Ridge.

We originally booked a room at The Ridge because of the location and the pools. However, since we were there for our anniversary, they upgraded us to a room in the Playa Grande part of the hotel down by the beach. But the best part was that they let us keep our access to The Ridge elevators. This was great because the pools at The Ridge are much better, and if you are walking to town it’s a lot shorter to cut through The Ridge than walk all the way around. It worked out perfectly for us, because I think our room by the beach would have been better than one in The Ridge. I’ve heard that noise is a problem at The Ridge because of the bus turnaround in front of the hotel, which always seemed very busy.

Or upgraded room was in the Playa Grande building that faces the ocean, and it was awesome. It was a two-room suite, so our son had a sofa bed in the living room, and we had a private bedroom. There was also a kitchen, but we didn’t use that at all. We also didn’t do the full all-inclusive food deal because we wanted to enjoy most of our meals at the countless good restaurants in town. We did pay for the all-inclusive breakfast, which was fine but we got tired of it after a few days. But overall that worked out fine, since we were always at the hotel first thing in the morning.

We bought tickets for the Mexican Fiesta night, and we enjoyed that. The Asian night looked good, but we didn’t do that.

The all-inclusive meals would only make sense if you wanted to spend all your time at the resort. That’s a perfectly valid type of vacation, but if that’s what you want to do then you’ve probably better off staying somewhere cheaper that is farther from town.

We tipped the maid every day, and she made towel animals, like you get on a cruise ship. There was a safe in the room which was big enough for a laptop.

The pools over at Playa Grande were also fine, and we swam there with our son. But the adult-only pool at the Ridge was much, much better.

Keep in mind that you can’t swim in the beach that is in front of Playa Grande (due to the high surf and currents), so if you really want to do a lot of beach recreation, you should stay across the bay by Medano beach. We mostly wanted to shop in town and swim in the pools, so this wasn’t an issue for us. However, we did take a water taxi over to Medano beach one day. That was fun. We were glad we went early. That beach gets pretty busy and wild later in the day. There is plenty of competition for a water taxi, so be sure you get a good deal. Also, expect the boat vendors to upsell you to include a snorkel trip, etc. We did a short snorkel, which was fine, but we didn’t see much.

Here are a couple of other tips:

The Ridge’s shortcut gate to town is awesome, but keep in mind that it doesn’t open until noon, for some odd reason, and it closes at midnight. Outside of those hours, you need to walk all the way around the long driveway. Note that it’s a pretty long walk from the beach side of Playa Grande to get out of the hotel.

Massages were the best deal in town! I got a couple of those for only $20/hour. You can’t beat that!!

The pedal-bike taxis were a good way to get around. The regular vehicle taxis were very expensive.

There’s an ATM at the bottom of the driveway by the bus turnaround. Note that many of the ATM’s in town only give Dollars.

Here’s an great video I found on youtube which shows the awesome Ridge pools and bar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ww-8UViCrXw&feature=youtube_gdata

Regarding money, when we were shopping in town we found that prices varied a lot depending on the currency. Some vendors wanted Dollars, and their prices were cheaper if we paid in Dollars. Other vendors clearly wanted Pesos, and the prices were a lot cheaper if we paid in Peso. In general, we found that the first price they quote you will tell you which currency they want. So, ask the price to determine the currency, and then negotiate down from there in that currency.

Overall, most vendors wanted Dollars, and they rarely had very much change. So, bring lots of one-Dollar and five-Dollar bills! Some vendors (like the jet ski rental at Medano beach) only accepted Dollars, and some stores like the “OXXO” convenience store across from the hotel (like a 7-11) only took Pesos.

When you are walking around town, the fishing and tour vendors will constantly approach you to sell their trips. If you want them to leave you alone, immediately tell them it’s your last day. We did that every day, and it works great. By the end of the week, a couple of the regular vendors started to recognize us, and they noticed that every day we told them it was our last day. They were amused, but they got the hint.

If you like to gamble, you’ll notice a big casino sign at the far end of the harbor. We went there, but didn’t like it. They had a complicated voucher money system, and the minimum bets were pretty high (i.e. so it was expensive to play there). There’s another casino in town called PlayWin, and that was a much easier, closer, and cheaper place to gamble. The casino only takes Pesos.

Some of our favorite restaurants were Lorenzillo’s, D’right Joint, La Galeria, Captain Tony’s, and the awesome steak nachos at the little Cabo Blue outdoor bar in the center of town.

Ocean view, marina view, whale sightings, adult area, family area with water slide, pool side food and beverage service, infinity edge pool, and plenty of shaded lounging options makes this resort a unique and perfect vacation home. Great staff including the always smiling Juan. Also go see Maria and Paula on the PG concierge team to get really taken care of.

I have to say that this is a vacation that we look forward to every year. We get to see great friends and get treated like royalty by the waiters at the pool. Juan Fernando, Teo, Flavio, and Violeta are just a few of the great employees that they have there. They allways take great care of us...and they remember are names every year. I do have a few problems with some things as a timeshare owner, but I will talk directly to The Ridge for those things. They have nothing to do with the employees who are always GREAT!

Room Tip: Buildings down below are not very good. Cold and dark. Always try for buildings A or C for the bes...
