Sandos Finisterra Los Cabos
Ranked #25 of 71 Hotels in Cabo San Lucas
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 9 August 2014

Stayed at Sandos Finisterra from 26 Jul-2 Aug.
We went through Apple vacations but opted for a private transfer to resort used Cielto. They were right there for us with water and beer in the car. Would recommend them and use them again.

The one thing we may not do again is go in July. The humidity was a killer.

Made it through the airport quickly last flight to arrive.

Meet by the bellman and directed to the front desk(no champagne),The young lady working the desk was very friendly.
We were in building 5 room 5103.
Surprised how big the room was.
Loved that it looked over the Marina and the Dolphin Show.
The room was always cleaned by the time we went back to the room.
The room could use a little fix here and there.
The refrigerator was stocked but husband did not like the beer chose Tecate so never touched. They had Pepsi not my favorite but it was okay.
Did use the water in the cooler but wish that had bottles.
Like that it look over the Dolphin show was good free entertainment when we went up and to see the Dolphins practicing on their own
The view of the Marina was also an extra watching the boats go in and out and the people walking around.

Restaurants

Didn't expect the food to be as good as it was
Don Diegos ate here first night didn't expect the selection we had.Ate dinner here twice.
Ate breakfast here every morning service here is was hit or miss. But the buffet was huge. There was something for everyone here.
Did lunch once okay.

EMILIANO'S the Italian restaurant.Very nice restaurant ate here twice.
Husband had the Oso Bucco both times and said it was the best he had ever had.I had the stuffed chicken breast, first time delicious second time it smelled and tasted like fish so didn't eat it.
The appetizers and the Parmesan soup were very good.

Agave.
Ate lunch here just about everyday.Food was okay and like the buffet they also had set-up besides the the ala carte menu.
Did seem though that every meal something was not brought out.

Did the steak house here 2 nights. The maitre had suggested the T-bone it was okay but the next time we did the rib eye and it was great.

Tortuga
Had the opportunity to do lunch here one afternoon with the resort GM Paulino Emiliano. He is such a nice gentleman and really wants feed back on the good and bad of the resort.
Had the best hamburger here where is actually cooked how you want it.
Husband had mentioned how hot the pool area bathrooms were and Mr.Emiliano checked it out and said he would put an air conditioner in there. If anyone is going let us know if it happens.

The pool service around the pool was outstanding. After the first day Francisco knew exactly what we wanted.
The first time we headed to the pool was going to do the adult only(not really adult only) but a gentleman stopped us and said we would like the lower pool better and that is where we stayed for 7 days.
The adult pool was standing room only some days. With kids and adults using the bar as a diving board.
Loved our pool could place your chair right in the water. This time of year though water was like bathwater.

I don't think we encountered one staff person who was not friendly and helpful.
We got to meet Lorenia the web relations person. She was so nice which we could have said good bye to her.
Mimi the concierge again went out of her way to get s in contact with Apple Vacations.

The wait staff were great,Oscar in Ajave,Gilberto.

The entertainment staff especially Eric and his boss couldn't have been more friendly. Just about everyday Eric showed up with a jar full of something for us to guess the count.

We loved the Whaler Bar not just for drinks but because it was air conditioned. And really like the bartender there can't remember his name.
One thing I would like them to rethink is to keep this bar open till 1100 or midnight.10 is o early to close it.

Can not forget the CupCake. Husbands first stop at 7a and on our way back to the room. Loved the manager here.

The one person that stood out is the Gm Paulino Emilian. Had lunch with him and he wanted to know what could be better with the property.. Gave him a few ideas. Saw him walking the property a lot. Checking things out.

Leaving we were waiting for the Apple transfer which never showed up and the head bellman quickly got us a taxi.

Know I have forgotten a few things.

Had a great time better than I thought we would have. We are a no kids no bands couple but would go back in a heart beat.

My husband and I celebrated our 1st anniversary at Sandos Finnestera. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a glass of champagne and warm welcome. The staff were efficient and friendly. Great start!

Time Share Sales Pitch: After check out, we were taken by a concierge to his desk to talk about what deals he could offer us on activities while at the hotel if we attended a 90 minute "meeting" the following morning. We got discounted dolphin tickets and a free ATV tour for two and 40% off a spa treatment because we agreed to attend. Don't be fooled - no matter what you are told, this is a time share sales pitch and if you are not firm with everyone involved about how much time you are going to stay at the meeting before leaving, you could get stuck. We have done these timeshare meetings before, and knew we could be firm, so the hour and a half was worth the free stuff. And it was an opportunity to see other spots in the hotel.

Room: Our room (4208) faced the marina and was beautifully remodeled. It had two double beds and a pull our couch, very spacious living area, big shower, double sinks, nice hardware and flooring and wonderful patio overlooking the marina. We could also see the pool where they do dolphin shows every morning! Bonus!!

Grounds and Surrounding: The hotel has a night club, 3 pools (gorgeous) leading up to the sand where the beach starts, something like 3 restaurants, a cupcake/coffee cafe, entertainment (dance shows, beach parties, pool activities) to keep us interested in what was going on.

The marina is about a three minute walk down the hill and very easy to do. However, I didn't particularly enjoy the walk back up (but I'm a wimp in the heat and it's not a reason to not stay at Sandos by any means!). Tons of restaurants and shops all in and around the marina.

The main attractions of Cabo is the Arch and that can be reached by a short water taxi ride in just minutes from the marina. We didn't do a 'tour' - just wanted to see Lover's beach and the arch so ended up paying $10 each and because everything is in such close proximity, we saw it all by default - so don't pay extra if they try to sell you the pirate cave, sea lion den, lover's beach, the arch, etc as you'll see it whether you like it or not on the way to the arch! :) We did two activities that were booked through the hotel (dolphin show and ATVs) and were super happy with them both! Internet access is free and you don't need a code. Even at the pool there was usually a signal.

The pools were incredible. There are three great sized pools, one with their own style. The one closest to the hotel seemed to be filled with families, the second was more for partiers (has a swim up bar) and the third is relaxed and a good balance of fun and peace. It's also right by the beach, which is a high bonus. :) Servers walk around all day waiting to serve food and drink.

The beach isn't swimmer friendly - dangerous waves. But, it sure is beautiful!!!! And there are plenty of little huts with chairs underneath - some even with hammocks so you can enjoy the view and have some shade if you wish. We dipped our feet in and let a few waves knock us around, but stayed pretty aware of the water and it's dangers. Most of our water time was spent at the pool.

All-Inclusive: The package we got was all inclusive, which made this trip even better. It's totally worth it if you are going for a relaxing vacation. Literally everything at the hotel is free to you if you're all inclusive. Absolutely no stress. The incredible thing is that the hotel and service staff are not stingy on how much you can eat or drink of their wonderful food! It's literally all you can eat and drink, no questions asked if you have the all in bracelet. Food and drinks were not superb, but really good! And the service staff are friendly, accommodating, and efficient. We ate mostly at the buffet (Don Diego) which was open for breakfast and dinner and had our lunches at the pool (food from the restaurant at the pool).

This was by far, the best hotel I have ever experienced, and I've done a lot of traveling! Highly recommend Sandos Finnestera.

Room Tip: We were told that the rooms with a marina view were newly remodeled (ours was) and rooms on the beac...

When you enter, the lobby is basic and does not have the "wow" factor, but the best part is the friendly welcome by the Bell Boy and front desk staff. You are welcomed with a glass of champagne.. There is a beautiful waterfall feature across from the entrance to the resort. There are two decent gift shops in the lobby too.

There is a bridge between the old section and the new section so it’s easy to get to everything. There’s a giant stair case by the waterfall if you prefer to walk. The older section is where the main pool is with the infamous thatched roof and it’s on the beach. The newer section is on the marina side, but many rooms still have ocean views.

This resort is located directly across from the marina, which is the best part. We walked their every night. The only downside is that you have to walk down a steep hill to get there, so you have to be sober and in good shape. LOL

Sandos is a very unique resort and can’t really be easily compared to other all-inclusive resorts. I loved it, but it’s not typical. I loved the rocks, the views, the food, etc.

This hotel is great for families, friends, honeymooners, etc. It is not recommended for the handicapped or those with limited mobility.

There is free Wi-Fi throughout, but it was a little sketchy. Sometimes I could get on Hotmail or Facebook, but I couldn’t upload my photos. This was not a necessity.

No need to wear heels here because of the different levels.. You also don’t have to get as dressed up in the evening.

Restaurants – No restaurant reservations are needed, but if you are Royal Elite, they will make reservations for you. The buffet, Don Diego, is not as large as the RIU buffets. but they have great options and good quality food (especially the cream soups!). The décor is Mexican modern and the views of the marina are amazing. You can dine inside or out. It is air conditioned.

The buffet, the Italian, and the Cupcake Café are all located on the 7th floor of the new section.

There was never a wait at any of the restaurants although the hotel had a high occupancy rate.

Cupcake Café – Great spot to get a snack or hot/cold coffee drink or Smoothie. Besides a variety of cupcakes, they also have some other pastries as well as Panini’s and sandwiches.

Emiliano’s – Italian a la carte restaurant with a great bar. The Bartender here made great drinks. This restaurant is air conditioned. The service was good, but I preferred the Mexican/Steak House restaurant. They also serve a la carte breakfast at Emiliano’s, and you could have a lobster omelet if you wanted to.

Agave – Mexican restaurant that is open air by the adult pool. The menu had a huge variety and I loved the salad and Queso Fundido. (I already duplicated the salad since I've been home.) My steak was gigantic. The day after we ate here, they changed the menu to be Mexican and a Steak House. The menu looked great!

Tortuga Beach – For Royal Elite guests only, located at the beach. They serve a variety of Smoothies, which were better than the those at the Cupcake Café’ (they used real fruit). They serve the same breakfast menu as Emiliano’s, and for lunch, bagel sandwiches, pizza, and other small bites.

Room Service – I never saw so many people order room service before at any hotel. The majority of people were ordering room service daily. The Royal Elite guests have an upgraded room service menu.

Pools – The pools by the beach are part of the old section. They have the infamous swim-up palapa that they had when it was Finisterra. There’s an active pool and an adults pool. On the 7th floor, there is a smaller pool for the Royal Elite guests. We were Royal Elite, and practically had the pool to ourselves everyday. It overlooked the marina, was right outside our room, and you could watch the dolphin show from the pool. The water temps were perfect.

Entertainment – They have an outdoor stage that’s outdoors near the Cupcake Café overlooking the marina. It’s a very nice space and the show was your typical. On Friday nights, they have a “white” party like Sandals/Beaches. Everyone dresses in white and they have a fire show on the beach. It’s not to be missed! A show like that would cost a lot of money in Hawaii.

Spa – The spa was amazingly beautiful and built around a rock. They had a nice gym too.

Beaches – The beach is not swimmable, but the waves were amazing and the Dolphins were frolicking in front of the hotel one day. They also get Sea Lions. During the summer months, the water comes up pretty high. They are located next to Capella Pedregal, so you know it's a great location!

Rooms – The older rooms have terra cotta tiled floors and are spacious. They are nicely appointed with a large closet and standard bathroom (but they have a tub). The newer rooms are built into the rocks. We were in the newer section and were Royal Elite. Our room was Mexican Modern in design. The toilet and shower were separate and the double sinks were located in the bedroom to make it easier to get ready. There was a step down with a nice sitting area (with sleeper sofa). We had great ocean views from the balcony. They don’t provide bottles of water, but they have a mini water cooler with hot/cold water. The mini fridge had a variety of cans of pop, beer, sparkling water, etc. They carry Pepsi products. Our bathroom did not have a tub, but some of the Royal Elite rooms have a tub in the middle of the room.

Royal Elite - You have your own small pool overlooking the marina with a bar/washrooms. At the main pool, there are canopy beds to reserve for RE only. There’s a casual restaurant at the beach for RE members only. RE members get the upgraded rooms and the beach towels are provided in the room. There is also an upgraded room service menu for the RE guests.

Staff – The staff really makes this hotel what it is. I imagine that some have been there for a long time. Everyone remembers you and what you are doing. It’s really amazing. I even saw one Waiter at the buffet pick up a little boy’s plate after he was done with his choices, and carried it to the table for him. Special thanks to Alvaro (Bell Boy), Gina and Maria (Front Desk), Marcos (Waiter), Karla (Hostess), Janyss (Hostess), Rocio in Sales for the tour and kindness, and especially to Mr. Paulino for his hospitality. (I'm sure that I missed some of the staff because I'm bad with names, but everyone was very kind.)

*** BEST PLACE TO EAT IN LAS CABOS "MARIA CORONA" AMAZING... OTHERWISE: The experience at the airport was horrific. People hollering at you and pulling on you to listen to their spiel concerning a time share... We were looking for a certain driver and several people lied to us saying they were him. Had they not given me a description I would have been clueless. Once we got the right guy he was awesome. The resort is beautiful. The staff is very nice and helpful (if on a slim chance they understand what you are saying) However, the pools feel like bath water and were extremely dirty. We ate breakfast on the morning we were leaving I had eggs and bacon at the resort and have been sick ever since... That has been 5 days!!!! The location was great, short walk to the marina. We took a boat to Lovers Beach and the water was so choppy and bad undertows we were really afraid for our safety and the guy on the boat could have cared less.. Never once even tried to help us in or out of the boat. People are very aggressive about getting money from you. We travel a lot and will never go back to Los Cabos!

After a less than thrilling stay at Dreams Los Cabos we were moved to Sandos. From moment of arrival we were greeted by a very enthusiastic and delightful front desk clerk name Gina, who offered to go above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful 20th anniversary. Oliver kept us energized and was hands down the best entertainment staff person I have ever met. Mari Chuy rescued us when we locked ourselves on the balcony and did so with a great smile. Every employee we encountered seemed thrilled to be working at this resort and providing exceptional service. Food was fabulous. Pools were beautiful and this resort was alive with happy guests. The first guest we encountered at the resort said "welcome to happy" and happy we were. There was free wifi, icy cold beer, and the bartenders were top notch, a far cry from our stay at Dreams despite having a lower rating! This gem of a resort knows how to treat its guests and rescued what would otherwise have been a lackluster experience to this great vacation destination. We can't wait to go back!

The best part of this resort is its LOCATION!! It is a short walk to the marina and a lot of downtown activities. We had a blast taking a glass bottom boat ride and a tour on the PEZ GATO!!! The view of the arch was breath taking. We had a great time overall. The staff at the resort were friendly and went beyond out of their way to make us happy (Levi, salinas, Itzel, Jose Luis, Jorge ). As for negative, the checking in process is too long. We arrived at the resort at 2:15pm and then escorted to another table to receive an "0ver view of the resort and its activities" but it is really a long presentation to hear and schedule a breakfast to buy a timeshare. Olga spoke and pressured us for about an hour to go the next day to listen to this presentation. The timeshare presentation lasted 3 hours!!! We wanted to take a brochure to analyze it and make an informed decision but it is not allowed. They said it had to be bought on the spot. Of course, we didn't buy one in such time constraints. We did not let this first day deter us from having a Great time. Would we return to Sandos? Absolutely!!!!

We have been coming to this hotel for several years. Although I would like to try other hotels, our small group prefers this one since it is so close to the Marina. There is plenty of shopping that is close by as well as restaraunts. The dolphin pool is right across the street. They have recently been taken over by Sandos and it has been established as an “All Inclusive”. Although it’s a short walk to places, I would advise catching a cab to go back to the hotel since the climb back up the long driveway can be strenuous. The Finnestera used to have a shuttle that went up and down the driveway and I wish that Sando would bring it back. The food is pretty good and we always love the fish tacos for lunch and cappuccinos in the morning. The service was WONDERFUL at all times! Everyone that works on the property is very pleasant and the Activity Staff was a lot of fun! There are several pools to choose from and the one nearest the ocean was more quiet, the middle one is more for activities and the one closest to the hotel was where the children and families seemed to gather. I treated myself to one of their Spa Massages and my therapist, Ruth, was fantastic! They tell you to bring a bathing suit with you so that you can sit in the sauna or hydrotherapy pool before or after your massage. I would advise to take advantage of one or both of those features but, you should also bring your undergarments and a set of dry clothes with you as well to change into. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms were refurbished but they didn’t do anything with the bathrooms. They have plastic chairs on the balcony that really should be tossed and replaced with something nicer. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: The Ocen View rooms have a pretty view. The rooms at the far ends of each section are pretty noisy s...
