Trying to decide between Cabo or Cancun-RIU Palace

Hotels
Both have nice facilities with Cancun being enclosed and Cabo all open aired. Cancun has more of a musty smell with all the humidity. Same type of decor, with the rooms exactly the same. Both have the deadly bathtubs and the slippery tile/marble floors. Furnishings are both outdated but very nice. Both have a safe with a old style type key that you have to carry around with you. Both have the same liquor and drinks that are always kept well stocked. Both have non potable water,so brushing your teeth with bottle water the same. Elevators at Cancun and lots of walking at Cabo, I don't think Cabo would be very enjoyable for anyone with any type of handicap. Exact same shows and food choices, both very good.

Beachs
Cancun has a swimable beach and beautiful white powdery sand. Cabo is not swimable and has grainy type of goldish sand. Cancun is the clear winner. However, Lands End rocks are beautiful and cruise ships always in front of the hotel in Cabo. Both have different type of beauty.

Resorts
Cabo and Cancun both have sister properties next to the hotel where you can use their facilities but they cannot. Sante Fe in Cabo and Riu Cancun in Cancun. They both have the rowdier crowds but can be lots of fun. Pay the extra and stay in the Palace were you can have the best of both worlds. Sante Fe in Cabo has a ton of walking to get anywhere with a lot of the rooms having no view, Riu Cancun rooms all have a good ocean view. Both Palaces are very very nice !

Pools
Both have a quite pool and a activity/party pool. Cabo's pools are bigger, as well as the resort. Cancun has a swim-up bar in the activity pool but Cabo has swim up seperate pools with tables/chairs in the pool. So, needless to say, the two swim-up bar pools can get kinda dirty towards the end of the day. Bathrooms are a long way away for both hotels, crazy. Cancun has a pool area bar were you can actualy sit by the pool. Cabo has the same type but do not have any chairs at the bar. Pools at both resorts are stunning infinity pools. Lots of available chairs at both resorts with prime seats going early in the morning. Tip the pool guy at both resorts when you first get there and they will reserve the prime spot for you.

Food
Read all the other reviews-very good value for the money !

Airport
Go directly outside----period,do not stop for anything. They may tell you they are your transportation company, but they're not.

Weather
Cancun can have some rainy days, Cabo hardly ever rains. Cabo is like a desert and Cancun is like a carribean island.

Guests
Cabo is almost all Americans and Canadians. Cancun has people from all over the world, but mostly from Europe.

Activities
Cancun has this one hands down, so much more to do in Cancun.

Theft
No problems here on the three trips in the last year. Remember, your going to always hear about the problems, what about the thousands that went with no problems. More crime here at home, promise !!!!

Overview
Both resorts are well worth the money and are both very nice. RIU has some of the best employees ever. Always smilling and hard working. (take some dollar bills for tips)

Stayed there for a couple days and was very dissapointed . The food was that of a high school cafeteria and the beach was NOT swimmable. To far from town to walk and we just felt trapped.

I just got back yesterday Nov.21st,was there for one week and the resort is very nice, well kept grounds, good food at the buffets and at the restaurants, ample room for everybody at the pools, one activity pool with music and one nice quite pool, no matter what time of day you get down to it, but if you want a good spot at the pool get your towel early and put it on a chair at first thing in the morning at 7am then go make your dinner resevations, about 10mins from downtown, great beach, water taxi's and seedoo's at your doorstep.
On the downside the bathrooms are a little away from the pools, there is only one towel shack for the pools, the beds are like sleeping on sheets of plywood,I noticed the room doors when your leaving can pop open when you try to close it so when your gone you think it is closed but is not,It happened to me and it happened to the people across from me and I had to shut there door for them,I read some other reviews on this and l so saw a video a person had on youtube showing this.
IMPORTANT IF YOU GO STAY THERE>lock everything in the safe, like your passports, jewlery etc..and bring a lock for your suitcase and more items in there that you can and I say this because you will have the person come in to load up your fridge and a maid.So the last 3 days we were there we found a maintance person in our room to fix are sliding door which we never had a problem with and WEREN'T NOTIFIED THAT ANYBODY WAS COMING, 2nd the maids we coming back in the evening to are room again when they were in there in the morning,so what do you think they are looking for? The staff hopes you leave everything unlocked when the room is done.
So lock up at ALL TIMES AND DON'T LEAVE YOUR SUITECASE OR SAFE KEY HIDDEN IN THE ROOM,THE STAFF HAVE TIME TO FINED IT,DON'T TRUST THE STAFF!!!

Room Tip: if you want pool side make sure you ask them which pool it is so that you can decide

Do NOT stay here! Serious inside job happening! We just returned early this am and I felt obliged to write as soon as possible! We just returned from a one week family wedding trip. On day 2, $500 cash was stolen from our room. Along with that all the drawers were rummaged through. We returned from a long day at the pool to this disturbing scene. Front desk was beyond rude and ignorant. While my husband grew irate they finally called security. They removed the lock off our door and found 3 separate entries were made during our time at the pool. 2 were the maid (clearly unnecessary as they were hours apart) and the other the fridge stocker. Or so they say. Who knows. I happened to walk put and see the maid and we exchanged words. They tried to make us sign a waiver in order to start an investigation....DO NOT sign this. The GM Victor called a meeting in his office with my husband and invited us to dinner....lackluster gesture as it's an all inclusive. We demanded to move rooms as I was petrified. We set up "booby" traps daily to see if anyone came in and we also took a daily inventory of our goods. A sad sad sad thing to spend you'd vacation doing. We were also concerned of someone entering our room in our sleep and hide to place beer bottles at our door to ensure we'd wake up if the door slightly moved. Disturbing!!!!! This place is a joke and the rampant robberies and careless follow up further point out what a major issue this is. We told the customs agent at the airport yesterday and she said a couple returning from the same resort earlier that day were robbed at knife point ---- on their balcony!!!! Do NOT stay here!!! Terrible!!!!!!

My husband and I and another couple just returned from a week at the Riu Palace and we loved the resort and our vacation!! I read some of the bad reviews before we left, but I can honestly say that we had no bad experiences or services.
The rooms were cleaned everyday and there was staff constantly cleaning the resort, from the bathrooms, to the lobby to the lamp posts. There are safes in the rooms, and yes they should be updated to electronic ones, but you have a key that you need to take with you when you leave the room. We all had iPads, cell phones, money, jewelry etc and had NO issues with theft.
All of the staff was friendly and helpful in answering our questions, making dinner reservations and even with getting us a cab so we could go to Cabo one evening.
The food was excellent at the buffets and ala cart restaurants (where you get a ton of food).
There is relaxation pool and an activity pool so you can pick the kind of day you want. When you are at the relaxation pool, you can't hear or see anything at the activity pool so you really can relax!
We would definitely return to the Riu Palace!!
