We are hoping to hold our rehearsal dinner here when we return in October 2015. Highly recommend the eats and the drinks as well as the very hospitable staff!

“Great food but...............”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

I am a frequent visitor to San Jose del Cabo and spend weeks at a time here multiple times a year. El Herradero is one of our regular haunts that we like eat at when we want to spend $13-$30 US per meal. This recent trip to SJD, we had a lot of family and friends with us and we decided one night to go to El Herradero for dinner. As always, we were greeted by friendly staff. In fact, at El Herradero, it is typical to have more than your average number of wait staff hovering around you while you eat. This can be wonderful in some cases but, it also can be a hindrance when you’re eating or talking to your friends at the table and the wait staff is reaching over you to remove a bottle, can of pop or soiled napkin off the table. Most of the restaurant is an outdoor, open air restaurant that is rustic but clean. This time, we were seated in the small air conditioned room they have. As with any Mexican restaurant in the world, we were served chips and salsa (salsa was served in a stone bowl). Drinks were ordered and food was ordered. As we waited for our food, I asked if we could get more salsa since we had a table of 13 people with two small stone bowls of salsa. We were served more salsa to go with our chips. Food came and all was delicious (as usual). When it came time to pay the check, I realized I was charged around $6 US dollars for the additional salsa. It was explained to me that the first portion of salsa was free but, if you ordered more, you had to pay for it. I then realized that soft drinks we were charged 35 peso’s or $2.69 for a can of pop. Don’t get me wrong, El Herradero is a great place to eat great Mexican dishes. However, it is not that nice of a restaurant to charge an individual such high prices for salsa that in 90% of Mexican restaurants is free (when ordering a meal at a Mexican restaurant). I felt that the soft drinks and bottled water were abnormally high in this restaurant. I do recommend this restaurant however; I caution you to look closely at the costs per item and do not assume that some of their items on the menu will be comparable in price but actually much higher to other Mexican restaurants in SJD or even the states would charge. Maybe a person could over look being over charged if El Herradero was located in a major US city within a nice building with modern amenities but El Herradero is a rustic, open air, palm covered building located across the street from a large dusty parking lot for the local public transportation buses.

If you have never have had one of these and you are not on a diet, I recommend you order this from their menu. You will not be disappointed. Make sure you get plenty of tortillas

“Good service”
Reviewed 14 August 2014 via mobile

We went for lunch and initially it was dead but then 2 buses full of tourist got dropped off. I guess this place is popular with tours. But we still got good service. The molecajetes are the best I've ever had. However they don't have rice in them which I've had at other places none the less it was good. The ceviche was also delicious. And the lady making tortillas is just great! I'd definitely recommend for lunch but there's better places for dinner.
