“Exceeded my expectations”
Reviewed 30 March 2014 via mobile

I stayed at Santa Maria for 15 days and from the moment I arrived until departure the hotel and their staff exceeded my expectations. Like is mentioned by others it is not a 5 star however for the price and service what do you expect. Although they were booked you would never know it. Many days felt like it was my own private pool. The room was large, clean and comfortable. I would recommend and stay at Santa Maria again.

I was travelling alone and wanted a fairly accessible, safe spot to call home for a few nights, within walking distance to the beach and bus. This was it. Right across from the Mega (an awesome grocery store!!) and about 3 blocks from the beach. A very nice pool area that I enjoyed every day and excellent cleaning staff. I requested a quiet room so they upgraded me for free to the golf course view and my room had two queen beds, a safe, big TV separated from a small kitchen and bathroom. I also had a balcony which was great for the morning to sit out with my coffee. I seemed that I had a renovated bathroom which was very nice. My only complaint was I had no hot water, any of the 3 days. I didn't mind for two of them, after roasting in the hot sun a cold shower was acceptable, but not in the morning when I had to fly out. I notice that other tripadvisor guests experienced similar problems. I tried different times of day but no luck. Other than that it was a fabulous experience.

Room Tip: Ask for golf course view to have a nice quiet stay.

The hotel is located 10 minutes walk to the beach, 3 minutes walk to the local Mega grocery store complex, which includes Starbucks, McDonalds, etc. The room was huge, clean, and included a 2 burner stove, mini fridge, microwave, mini kitchen. Ocean view in the distance, private balcony. The pool was great. The site did have some construction in progress, but did not interfere with our stay. The private large 'gated' parking lot was another bonus. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Our room was southwest-facing.

Stopped here for one night of a Baja tour before flying out of SJD the next day. If you take it for what it is, the place is not bad. For three women travellers, we had a suite with kitchen, dining area and three beds (one in a separate bedroom). The pool was busy with loud kids when we were there, and waves at the beach were a bit big for swimming, so we found there wasn't much to do for our half day there. The hotel is located right off the highway, close to walk to the Mega and fast food. We walked about 10 mins to get to the beach. The suite was mostly clean, some squashed bugs in the corners, the bedsheets had odd orange stains. This place would be a decent option for longer term accomodations on a budget-kitchen was perfectly useable (with dishwasher), nice large patio (golf course view for us)-if you don't mind taking cabs or walking everywhere. Loud noise overhead at 5am, and again at 7 was a bit annoying. Not sure if it was other hotel guests, or maintenance/construction.

Santa Maria Hotel Y Suites is a perfect place in a great location! The rooms are large and comfortable. The kitchen is fine for small prep meals. With Mega supermarket right across the street, it's easy to save $ by fixing small meals in the micro or 2 burner stove. There is a small frig, blender and coffee maker also. There is limited pots and pans etc so don't plan to make a big meal. Try to get a room facing the golf course. There are no elevators so you may want to stay on the 1st floor.

TIP: Mega is the best place to get great exchange rate! Just pay in US and they give you Pesos back ! They also take CCs even Amex !

Be sure to go to Shooters and say hi from Robert ti Mckinnsey and Shelly, the mother daughter owners from Vancouver. Also get the Monday Night steak special !

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the golf course. There are no elevators so you may want to stay on the 1st...

I have always (15+yrs) stayed at the now Best Western,(and would again). However my dentist told me of Santa Maria,; I'm glad she did. Managed smoothly by a gentleman from Mexico city area, and located conveniently across the street from "The Mega", favorite gringo shopping plaza, it has secure parking, clean efficiency rooms, w/ a pool, gym (albeit quite warm), and soon a reading room/library. There's lavenderia, about 3$ for wash/dry,

So the wife and I booked this through Booking.com where it's described as a five-star property. That's not why we booked it, and once you get over the fact it's definitely more like a 3.5, it's perfect! If you go here expecting a "real" five-star, you'll be disappointed but if you adjust your expectations, it's awesome.

The main reason we booked this hotel was price. It was something ridiculous like only $65/night which got us two weeks in Cabo over Xmas for the price of what we'd have paid for one week at any all-inclusive, which made it an easy choice.

**DO NOT STOP INSIDE THE AIRPORT TERMINAL FOR ANYONE OFFERING YOU A RIDE**
They are all BS time-share salespeople who will outright lie/cheat/scare/scam/overcharge you for a ride. It's like sharks smelling blood. You've been warned! Just simply keep walking outside and decide if you want to get a cab/shuttle/or bus. All cabs are apparently one company, should be same price. It WILL seem shady how things work and you do need to pay up front.

Location was also very good...for us. Again, it's a matter of what you want. If you want to open your sliding glass door and walk out on the beach, this is not for you. If you don't mind walking maybe 10 min to a gorgeous beach that no one ever seemed to be on, it's great. You are literally a 45 sec walk across the street to the Mega, where you can buy all your groceries/booze. In the same plaza are a also a Starbucks, McDs, and other stores. There's a good restaurant called Cynthia's about 7 min away which has great salads and you're about a 25-30 min walk into "downtown San Jose". You'll start passing another strip of restaurants about 10 min along the way. We liked the walks, so didn't mind not being right on the beach.

Hotel is right off the highway, no more than a 5 min walk, with bus stops in both directions. WAY cheaper than a taxi to Cabo or Airport, just wish we knew that before we took a cab in from the airport. Would've been 64 pesos for 2 or about $5 instead of $45 cab. Taxi took only 15 min on new direct highway. Took bus to airport when we left for 22 pesos or about $2 total. It stopped a bunch but still only about 35 min total, though there is a decent walk to get to terminal. Frequent buses. No hassles, drivers will always say DOWNTOWN going or MEGA coming home.

Rooms were fine for what they were. Clean, spacious enough with table and chairs, kitchenette with just the basics which allowed us to make breakfasts nearly every morning and some lunches. Booking.com site said came with coffee maker. Ours didn't, so we just asked at the front desk and got one no problem. We also wanted a big pot instead of just the pans the room came with. Same thing, no problem. Mini-fridge held a decent amount and had a mini-freezer big enough for one big bag of ice from the Mega. We were in 507 and faced the golf course which was ultra quiet. Flat-screen tv we turned on twice in two weeks worked fine, though not many channels and mostly en espanol, if that matters to you. Had AC which we never used. Bed was fine, though sheet did have a burn hole one time. Shower pressure was good, water was hot.

There is a pool, unheated, which is chillingly refreshing and nice once you're in, big enough to swim laps in, and, during our two weeks, had four people maximum around it at any one time!

A quick thumbs-up to some of the people working here. Michelle, especially, on the front desk was extremely friendly and helpful and we dealt with her for most of the questions we had. Alajandro was also very nice and helpful. We placed two wake up calls and both were made promptly on time. Marie, our housekeeper, was also always happy and our room was always spotless and fully stocked. Groundskeepers seemed to take a lot of pride and were always out raking or pruning.

A few minor negatives:
--Booking.com says "soundproof rooms". Ha, just no. Walls are paper thin and you will definitely hear people above/below you dragging their chairs in/out. Or, um, other in/out activities. Acoustics are also bad outside in the hallways so you'll hear loud conversations, people calling to each other, doors loudly slamming, etc.
--Several areas of hotel are currently under construction, including the new gym just outside our door. We were told construction wouldn't start before 10 or 11, but some days definitely way before that with saws and banging.
--If you're booking here because it has a gym, the current "gym", while they build the new one, is basically a 50 sq. ft closet jam packed with old equipment off a storage room full of boxes upstairs of the check-in desk. Trust me, you will not use it. Ever.

All in all, a great little hideaway and we'd definitely stay again.
