“Hot in July”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

We came here for a wedding and stayed three nights. What is not to like about a place when checking in the first question you are asked is, "Would you like some champagne?" Overall it was a good experience.

First the room we had was amazing. Having stayed all over the world I would rank the bathtub number one on our list. Everything in the room was nice including the balcony. We had breakfast delivered to our room every morning and ate listening to the feint sound of pounding waves. Breakfast in your room, included, is a must!

This was our first time to stay at an all inclusive. In my mind it is much like a cruise on land. Everything is included even drinks.

A word of advice given by many, always ask for a double or strong. Otherwise you will get a very watered down version of the drink you want.

We did not get to experience many of the restaurants as the wedding took many of our meal times. We did eat our last night in the Italian restaurant and I would simply say it was average. I would have low expectations for eating as the food while good is not outstanding.

Why go? To do nothing but lay in and around the pool with a cool drink in your hand served by wonderful staff. The ocean while impressive is disappointing in that you cannot get in the pounding surf unless you have a death wish. To swim in the ocean is a long walk on very soft and extremely hot sand. So, wear shoes if you try that.

On the whole, while very hot in July we had a good time. If you need a trip to simply relax and do nothing this is the place.

Stayed at SPLC from 6/21 -6/28. We were originally supposed to arrive on 6/20, but had a delayed connecting flight in Mexico City. We arrived at about 2am on 6/21. We avoided any timeshare presentations in the airport and at the hotel. Check-in was quick and easy. Becuase we were there on our honeymoon, there was a nie welcome letter and bottle of champagne. The 24 hour room service was super handy at this point, as we were starving!!! Every single employee at this resort goes above and beyond. PLEASE be sure to TIP. I can't tell you how many people we saw not tipping. Being a NY'er I find this highly insulting to the dedication and hard work of the staff. We started out in a garden view room in bldg 2 (which technically has an ocean view). We quickly upgraded to a swimout in bldg. 2 after spending a day at the main pool. The water-aerobics and volleyball get old after about 2 days. There were also several groups of people who in their mid 40's -50's who forgot they were in Puerto Los Cabos and not San Lucas, or Cancun for that matter. Each afternoon we enjoyed our swim out pool with no one around to bother us. The mini-bar was restocked daily and if you are present when they restock and tip a couple of $$, you will certainly get extra Coronitas & Pacificas! We also found that in order to have the room decorated for our honeymoon, that we needed to be preent for a phone call from either the Room Service Manager or Concierge. They had told us that they were trying to reach us, as we often had the "do not distrub" light on. We came back from dinner with a room decorated with roses and a banner on the door, it was so nice. Honeymoon breakfast needed to be set up with the concierge and it came within 15 minutes of our requested time. The rooms were great and room service wonderful.

BEACH:
The sand is very hot and coarse, and due to the riptide/"undertow" it is unswimmable. You can walk about 15-30 min (depending on how quick you move) to the marina and swim with the locals. We did this one day and certainly it was nice to get in the Sea of Cortez! But the walk back was brutal!

FOOD:
Breakfast - Market Cafe was wonderful - we sat in Solimando's section daily. He was wonderful.
Lunch: we ate at Seaside Grill- the food was good, but the service is slow. Barefoot Grill --- THANK YOU CRUZ! This guy hustles, he is constantly getting you drink refills and clearing your plates. This seemed to be more Americanized food: pizza, fajitas, burgers/hotdogs, chips.
Dinner: The first night we ate at Market Cafe for the Mexican Show- the show was great, food was good too. The only other restaurants we ate at were Portofino, Oceana, and Seaside Grill. Only ate at Oceana, and Portofino. You must try the catch of the day at Oceana! Portofino- everything on the menu is great. Again, with seaside - the service is spotty, which makes for a less than pleasant dinner experience.

POOL: The service goes above here: THANK YOU ABEL & JUAN. Seriously the BEST waiters at the pool. Never had an empty glass.

EXCURSIONS: We did a glass bottom boat tour of San Lucas - the Arches, for $40pp including transportation. I am glad that we saw San Lucas. The drivers try to push you to stay longer for "shopping time". We opted out, and took the 9:40am bus there and 1:00pm bus back. 1 hour of shopping/drinking/being harassed by people on the street was enough for us. The Amstar reps on property were lovely to talk to and did not try to push any excursions or upsell.

The only real dissappointment here is the lack fo a swimmable beach. I also think if the hotel is at full capacity, there will be a problem with the size of the pool, perhaps they will build another?
Overall, great stay at Secrets PLC --- it toook way too long to get to and from NY so not sure if we will return, but will definitely now only be staying at AM resort properties. I feel the need to keep saying this: the service was OUTSTANDING. Thank you Cruz(Barefoot), Abel &Juan(Pool), Santos(room service), Solimando(Market Cafe) & Silvia(Rendevous)

Room Tip: We upgraded to a swimout room bldg. 2, you lose the ocean view, but you will be grateful to swim in...

Stayed here 5 nights, service is 5 star in every way. Nice pools not crowded at all, swim up bar, plenty of chairs with bar service. Rooms are superb in every way. Huge soaking tub, separate shower and plenty of counter space, two separate lavatories with upscale toiletries. Bed are relaxing and comfortable. Turn down service, rooms cleaned twice a day. Everyone of the staff provided first class customer service. The only reason I did not give them a 5 star was the food. Breakfast buffet was great, lunches were excellent however the dinners were only average or slightly below. The food at the Italian restaurant was not very tasty, lacked flavor and not much variety. The wine (Merlot) was not good at all, low grade at best. That would not keep me from returning though. Overall a very nice, clean, service oriented resort.

Beach...yes the undertow is horrible and yes Doug we did loose a lot of things but came out of it with great new friends. See you in San Antonio or the next Secrets resort whichever comes first.
Cabo San Lucas... We did have fun partying at Cabo Wabo and Squid Roe the people in town were very friendly but when you return to resort don't mention Sammy Hagar owning Cabo Wabo because the younger people (Olivia) will make you feel old when they don't know who he is.
Spa.. Absolutely amazing I had the best 80 minute deep tissue message I have ever had. The entire staff within the spa were so friendly and helpful.
Room...our room was on the second floor I prefer the view over the swim out pool. The rooms were very clean and had plenty of room to move around. If you like to unpack all your clothes they have plenty of drawer space as well as hanging space.
Pools... The big pool was fine but you can't see or hear the ocean once your laying on your chair. We spent the majority of our time at smaller infinity pool which had an amazing view that overlooks the ocean. So even though you can't really hang out on beach because it's so hot and you can't get in water to cool off you still can have the beach feeling.
Great trip!

We taveled to this great resort back in January of 2014, the resort was very new (only around weeks open) so there were a few things that had not been completed. Overall this is going to be one of the top secret resorts soon. To keep it short I will list the best and the most disappointing things only.

Food - 4 star. Very tasty and good options. Don't waste money one a beach dinner.
Room - 3.5 star. We had the swim out room, it was nice but didn't compare to Maroma Beach.
Service - 5 star. Any place that can keep drinks and food flowing and poolside towels at the ready is great in my book.
View - 5 star. Ocean on one side mountain on the other need I say more.
Beach - 2 star. If you are looking to swim go elsewhere, that being said the sound of the waves hitting the beach were amazing.
Housekeeping - 3.5 stars. The room was cleaned 2-3 times daily...but at very different and odd times. No turn down service on most nights.

Overall this place is nice, worth the price but not ready for the big leagues of Secrets Maroma Beach or the Zoetry line.

Room Tip: Swim out rooms are still the way to go.

Our stay at Puerto Los Cabos could have only been better if we could have stayed longer. The rooms and food were great. They have a great gym as well.
Everything is clean and the staff...wow. Cruz always seemed to know when I needed a new drink and what a personality. He is one any company would be proud to have.
For a couples resort they had a ton of activities or "nothing at all" if that's what you wanted. Thanks to the activity staff, Danielle and Dave.
I beach bar isn't completed yet but it looks to be a great hang out place.

So here I am once more....In the latest playground from Secrets Resorts. We stayed here from June 19th to the 26th. Our resume includes Maroma Beach, The Vine, Vallarta Bay, Silversands, St James, Huatulco, Iberostar Grand Paraiso, Iberostar Grand Rose Hall, Excellence Playa Mujeres, La Perla, Sandals Whitehouse, Valentine Imperial, yadda yadda…..

First time in Los Cabos, the aero-puerto is a brand new and beautiful and through customs quickly. No time share hawks in the airport when we arrived we got in at 7:30ish so gone home I guess. Yes I can see them there though so head right out the area once clear of the customs area to outside where real transfers are waiting for you. We talked to one person who was kind of bothered so don't stop unless interested until outside. Flew with Sunwing out of Toronto, on time no issues, perfect!

San Jose Del Cabo {airport located in San Jose} looked to be a very nice place, definitely a picture perfect location being seaside with desert and hills for a backdrop. We didn't get off the resort but heard from others who had gone, all said both towns were good, no issues, people friendly and helpful with Cabo San Lucus being the more party/tourist of the two. Squid Row was mentioned as a really interesting bar and of course Caba Wabo Cantina.... Someone said something about the Pink Kitty but that's a different review I guess ;-)

Facilities: Wow! The resort buildings are beautiful, a traditional Mexican architecture with a mix of contemporary design blended together perfectly to impress at every turn. I thought the quality/design/materials/workmanship was over the top in all main building facilities, very impressive. Sitting in the Rendezvous {aka bird cage} bar simply looking around at the design is just amazing! Clean and beautiful restrooms situated all over the resort.

Rooms: Fantastic! We were in a swim out room 3105, a perfect location for us, used the swim out every day later in the afternoon {thank you Secrets Los Cabos}. Very comfortable bed, maybe a little firm for some but others would like it, no issues sleeping at all. Huge rain forest head shower and two person Jacuzzi jetted oval tub. 42" flat screen with channel 48 as the education channel. Pacifico and Corona in the mini fridge {maybe something else in there too I didn't look} ;-). Maid service/turn down was flawless all week. It was a birthday run, they sent champagne and a special cake to the room, nice touches.

Pools: Main pool very large, nice in the water sitting benches around the palm tree islands in the pool, different. Service was good here; however we did spend most of our pool time at the smaller quiet pool beside the Oceana restaurant. The service at the quiet pool was great from everyone working there. At the smaller pool Omar/Sonia behind the bar were a pleasure to talk with {Canadians bothering them while trying to work} :-) and Valeria had to be one of the happiest people in the entire country, again everyone working this pool was fantastic! Needless to say we spent most days here, we liked this spot and the views of the mountains and the ocean were over the top.

Grounds: As others have stated, fantastic landscaping, flowers, cactus gardens, tree's it was very interesting for us as these plants DO NOT grow around Toronto. And yes when everything matures it will be amazing I'm sure. Note here too, everything was constantly being maintained and manicured.

Sea Side Grill: Not too bad, We both had the grouper, foccia bread all good, we only ate here once for dinner and once for lunch, tacos at lunch were good not over the top but fine.

Himitsu: Soups were not too bad we have had better, California roll sushi was good, and tempura sushi would have been better if served hot but still tasted good. I ordered the Tepanyaki chicken and shrimp a la carte; it was very good minus the chef at the table. Chicken Satay skewers were just ok not over the top.

Portofino: We liked this restaurant a lot. Definitely try the Eggplant Parmesan for me the best thing I ate in any restaurant. Linguine pasta with garlic and olive oil and parmesan cheese, lasagna, ravioli were all good. The Filet Migon was ordered medium but came closer to well done so could have been a little tenderer.

Oceana: SEA BASS! ENOUGH SAID. The shrimp cocktail {silia or something} excellent, we ate here twice and enjoyed both times.

El Patio: We enjoyed this take on Mexican; I had the Chicken Quesadilla and the flank steak. Both very good, the steak was more tender then the filet in the Italian. Vera Cruz sea bass was really good as well.

Room Service: we did a lunch one day everything was fine. Loved the Lasagna, Cesar salad and Bruschetta all good, fantastic room service compared to some experiences at other resorts.

Bars/Drinks: Service was perfect in/at all the bars. Lots of selections and some top shelf. Absolute vodka, Crown Royal, Bombay, Stolli, Herredura Reposado at most, The Don and The Goose in the lobby, Modelo, Modelo Negra, Corona, Pacifico. Drink consistency was one small issue we noticed; just sometimes one drink would come perfect the next was a little different. All were fine to drink no issues at all, being new perhaps and or some more experience this will even out. No worries though, the drinks were all very good and enjoyable. They just opened the permanent beach bar the day we were leaving, swings and nice location down at the beach.

Beach: We spent one afternoon there, yes no swimming allowed unless you have your passports, cell phone, expensive sunglasses and expensive shoes on your person. Apparently only then are you allowed into the water. It is a rather expensive excursion, apparently the ocean takes everything and by the time some people we met there were finished getting new passports etc it cost about 1K, so we decided not to attend this swimming adventure and stayed on land. Definitely bring a friend and they can join you frolicking in the waves as long as they have good shoes to lose too. {Hola Kim & Missy} :-) Beautiful beach though, huge waves crashing in and wide open for walking, I would go and stare in awe. PS: seriously do not venture into the surf, the undertow is very strong.

Nightlife: The resort has some interesting low key events in the evening etc but we usually were eating late dinners so just caught the tail ends here and there. Guitar/Piano in the lobby at night was nice. For late night partying we recommend the swim out pool party in 2 block, it usually gets started around 1:30AM and goes until the last person leaves. {Hola Olivia} :-)

Gym: I was in around 8:00-8:30 AM always no issues not too busy, 5 treadmills, steppers free weights and fixed equipment, very nice.

Hello to Missy and Greg from San Antonio, Kim and Mike from Austin and Olivia from Memphis, Claude from Irvine. It was great meeting everyone and we really enjoying hanging out with you doing nothing but working on tan or in my case burn lines. To obtain a perfectly straight line, lay on your back on a floater in the pool for about 1 hour, fall asleep and when you wake up... voila a perfect burn line at the water line.

I would also like to mention Cruz and his manager Antonio. I recognized Antonio from Secrets Maroma Beach and asked him, sure enough it was him. Both wonderful gentleman and Tony made sure we were looked after. Again all the staff here are fantastic, thank you.

Over all, I highly recommend Secrets Puerto Los Cabos and would return without hesitation, although we like to check out different locations I will be back. Feel free to ask me any specific questions, if you’re thinking about it, pull the trigger definitely one of the best “secrets” out there.

Salute!

Room Tip: All good, everyone enjoyed their room locations.
