Spent a week at the Hyatt Ziva (8/8 - 8/15/2014) with my wife and 2 kids (ages 7 & 8) along with another family. Having been to several AI resorts throughout Mexico and the Carribean, the Hyatt Ziva IMO is a decent value for the family vacation. However, there is room for improvement.

Pros:
- Beach location. Just steps from the pool is the beautiful Sea of Cortez.
- Food quality; A la carte dining offered for dinner. A nice departure from the buffet line.
- Pool is spacious. Nice swim up bar next to a gorgeous infinity pool.
- Hotel employees generally were very friendly. Eduardo Antonio Gonzalez always made our family feel welcome and was an incredible host @ the international restaurant.
- Good quality liquor offered, however you must request it by name (eg Don Julio, Absolut, Bacardi, etc). Otherwise the cheap stuff is provided.

Cons:
- Check in was a disaster. The room we were assigned to was occupied by someone else. Our bell boy made several attempts over the phone to remedy the situation but after being given the run-around and placed on hold for +15 mins, he conceded that it would be best for us to return to the front desk to resolve. Eventually we were provided a room with a better view and location.
- Rooms are a bit dark and dated. We stayed in Room 2127
- Air Conditioning everywhere throughout the resort was inadequate. Our room was damp and warm. VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. Consistently ~26 C / 80 F. We met several other families who also complained about this. Ditto for the restaurants/bars -- It's not cool to look like Patrick Ewing in the fourth quarter while sipping your miso soup. Would be wise to BRING A TOWEL.
- WiFi is insufficient. Regularly had problems connecting.
- Kids club could use some video games.

All in all, a decent place with great potential. The employees really do try their best, but they could use some additional training on how to better work together between departments to resolve issues (see above issue w/ Check-In).

I would consider going back again if they fix their air-conditioning issue for the sake of their guests' comfort.

Arriving at the resort was no easy task. Would never use Gray Line transfer again. From landing to resort took 2.5 hours. Had to wait for all other travelers before van could leave. Upon arriving, check in was easy, since we booked Premium room, private check in was included. This was a nice feature, since lines were quite long. They staff was not extremely informative about the resort. The weather there was quite hot and humid. I the only air conditioning in mainly in the hotel rooms and restaurants. I did not like at all, that the restaurants did not take reservations. At times, we could not even get into a restaurant at all in the evening and if we did, we usually ate around 9:00 pm or 10:00pm. If you eat at 6:00pm, there may not have been a wait. Dinner on average would take at around 1.5 hours. The pool area is crazy. Since, there is no swimming on the beach, the pool is packed. If you don't go down and put your towel out, between 7 and 8am, you will not get a chaise. The chaises are too close together. The adult pool was very very quiet. There is no view and too confined. It was so hot because, there was no breeze at all. My husband and I decided to try, even though a family resort, and will not be going back. Just too busy. If you are a family, it was great, except for the late dining. The food at all restaurants was very good. Drinks were ok, but had to wait a long time at the pool. The wifi was very slow to non-existant at times. Had the best luck with wifi at the pool area. Premium is probably not worth it. There is a private bar, if you can find it. Rooms the same.

Room Tip: Building C was nice. Any room will probably have a nice view. The Premium rooms are no different...

Hyatt Ziva absolutely met and even exceeded our expectations of what hotel hospitality should be about. The hotel is very clean, beginning from the room all the way to the hotel grounds. The staff is extremely friendly. It offers variety of food, buffet and specialty restaurants with great food choices. For our breakfast and lunch we liked to have a table in the area where Eduardo is helping guests. Eduardo is a very nice attendant, always ready to accommodate our needs. We had 6 relaxing days here complete with great service

The staff was absolutely amazing. Shoutout to Eduardo Antonio Gonzolos from the buffet - wonderful service and just a really nice guy! The food was excellent at all of the restaurants, and the shows every night were very entertaining. The views from the room were great, and I loved how it was right on the beach.

I stayed at the Hyatt Ziva from 8/9-8/15. During our stay, my wife and I had some issues with the hotel. The weather was extremely hot and humid. Not anything to do with the hotel but I would recommend visiting during cooler months.

Check-In

As soon as I arrived, one of the hotel’s employees was arguing with a guest of the hotel. This was awkward for everyone in the immediate area. I had read numerous reviews about the hotel’s front desk issues and now I clearly see the front desk is an area that needs immediate attention. The front desk experience was not a good one at check in. It took about 30 minutes for me to be told that the room wasn’t ready. The room not being ready was not the issue. The staff’s poor people skills were not impressive. This is not a blanket statement about everyone at the front desk. There were a few instances when the staff there was very helpful.

Room

During our stay, we were moved three times. The first room was too small since we were traveling with a toddler that needed her own sleeping area. The second room was perfect in size but had several maintenance issues. Next to the door there is a heavy table which was screwed into the wall. Neither of the two screws where into any wall studs. The table actually fell once and luckily for me my daughter was not close by when it did. The doors separating the rooms didn’t close properly and a metal bracket in the bathroom door fell off. After my wife brought this issue to Claudia, she was very apologetic and moved us to a room in Building 3 with an ocean view. The view from this room was awesome; however, this room also had issues. The air conditioner rattled and when it rained the master bedroom was completely flooded. The door to the master bedroom and terrace didn’t close properly.

Amenities

The hotel, grounds, pool and ocean are look very nice. You can’t swim in the ocean but you can relax in the sand and take picture. The pools were all very clean and well maintained. The pool side service was also adequate. I had read multiple complaints about that but I never experienced any problem there. The Wi-Fi was also adequate. Sometimes, it took a while to log on but for the most part it worked just fine. We ate at the Italian, French, Spanish, Japanese and international buffet. The food was very good. The service at the restaurants was excellent. At the buffet, Jesus stood out for excellent service. I used the gym quite a bit during my stay. It’s small but has a good mix of treadmills, elliptical, recumbent bikes and weights. We only watched one show which was also excellent. The hotel offers childcare for 20$ hour. We used it three times with mixed results. Room service food was okay at best. It was always available but not very tasty. The maid service was also okay at best. Sometimes, we’d call the front desk three or four times to get someone to show up.

All of the issues we had are very easy fixes for the hotel. The Hyatt Ziva is a very nice hotel. Some of the staff work very hard. In fact, almost all of them will go above and beyond to help whenever there is a problem. The others need more training and more of a sense of ownership when it comes to their responsibilities. If you carefully read some of the detailed reviews on trip advisor, you’ll see the same issues. This means Hyatt isn’t addressing them which is too bad.

All in all the value and experience you’ll have at this hotel are very good.

We loved the resort - and this is coming from non-resort people. We often turn our noses up at all-inclusive resorts, but this resort raises the bar. The food was very good - even at the buffet. Very fresh, lots of choice and we never got sick of it! The Spanish restaurant especially was amazing. We were there to relax, not think about anything and we got it. The room was very clean, though it could use an update (I think we were in an un-renovated room, but it was still nice). The pool area is perfect and service is fantastic. Overall, I don't have anything to complain about...and I normally do!

I came just with my husband, but I would come back again with the kids or with girlfriends.
