“The Goood, the bad and the ugly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2012

The Good: The resort is beautifully maintained, Rooms are spacious and clean, very good, 2 couples can comfortably stay in a room or a family of 6-8 with the pull out beds in the living room. The resort is close to Los Cabos, many resaurants, golf, has a beautiful beach. There are many deck chair and cabanas.

The Bad: A very small fridge, and with the price of food and drinks at this resort, you will want to stock up. Beds were quite hard and uncomfortable, but not terrible. the pools were quite cool especially the one closest to the ocean. You cannot swim in the ocean. We had one bad experience with a timeshare saleswoman who almost jumped into our vehicle when we were leaving one day but were not bothered again. Resort is dead as soon as it gets dark, this could be good or bad depending on who is staying, but with the resort prices everybody leaves in the evenings. Cabo San Lucas is a good 30 minutes away.

The Ugly: Drink prices were ridiculously expensive, even happy hour, you got one large drink instead of 2, but was still $10-15. Unfortunate, because if the drinks were reasonably priced we would have ordered most from the resort, but for these prices would go back to the room. Beer was $6 a bottle, so happy hour made it $3, much more reasonable. Went for breakfast one morning and my wife and I had toast and coffee, it was over $22, I did add a tip and later learned there was a gratuity already added and a line for a tip as well.

Tips and notes: Mega is a great place to shop for beer and groceries, prices are competative with wall mart and a much better location. Restaurants, Cynthia's behind Mega, great food. Guacamaya's, authentic mexican, awesome, cheap prices. Shooters, food was mediocre and slow but good to watch a game, $1 beers, bathrooms are gross, watch your step on the stairs. Rissellina (sp?) Sunset cruise in Cabo was awesome, We've done it twice and loved it both times $55 U.S. per person includes a good dinner and open bar, Highly reccommended.

One more note, Do not rent a car through Carrentals.com or FOX rent a car in Cabo, they wanted to add $18 per day above our online car rental rate even though our contract said"Full amount,No hidden charges" We went somewhere else, but we were extremely pissed off, never again.

Room Tip: We were on the main floor, and could hear the workers setting up in themorning. They say the resort...

The hotel and it's surroundings are beautiful. Looking out on the pool area and the Sea of Cortez, is breaktaking. We were there in Feb/Mar and, here's the "opps", the pools were very cold. Maybe not freezing but very cool. Even the "hot tub pools (2) were lukewarm. Very quiet except for the children that are in the hot tubs since the regular pools were too cold. At night it is extremely quiet. You can sit on the balcony and enjoy the beauty. As far as dining goes; go offsite. Not much to speak about at the property. Staff is "over the top" excellent.

Room Tip: If possible ask for the 6th floor. It looks out directly to the sea. All other rooms are on a slant...

This is our 3rd visit to this property (3/3-3/10/12). We do not own a membership here but during this visit we were ready to purchase. THis was our first mistake in that we devoted our precious vacation time to listen to the formal presentation from the onsite sales staff. What was supposed to be a 90 minute presentation turned into a 6 hour session of false promises, outright lies and utter deception. When returning the following day to ask questions prior to finalizing the purchase, we were again lied to, a familiar tactic reported by other victims such that the 48 hr. window would expire, and we would be obligated to buy. When these issues were brought to the attention of the sales manager, the hotel manager, and the corporate offices, there was no attempt to acknowledge the deception and we were basically told that they were collectively "sorry" but there was no accountability and no attempt to compensate us for 2 days lost of our 7 day vacation. It is truly a shame as there are so many wonderful people who work at The Mayan that take pride in their jobs, that the corporate office down to their sales force can diminish all their hard work. I would think in todays political climate where travel to Mexico is fading away daily, Mayan Properties and its representatives would go out of their way to make a visit to their resorts pleasingly memorable instead of one filled with negative memories. Adios Grand Mayan !

Room Tip: lock out rooms are ill equipped and poorly located. Doors are hollow and noise travels through doorw...

Pros - the staff are all kind, polite and considerate - they do try hard to please the vacationers at this resort. Nice size resort not so huge with so many rooms. Lovely clean rooms, pools and spa. Rooms are generous size and nicely furnished. Food was good quality and service friendly with a smile. Easy to take public transportation - to town, to big grocery store and down to Cabo San Lucas - no need to spend many dollars on taxis or rental car.
Cons - the so called PRC time share presentation took up 1/2 of our first day - they would not take NO for an answer - we traded our Worldmark credits through RCI to stay here and endured the whole sales ordeal for a free buffet breakfast for the four of us and discounts on activities (ie dolphin swim) and 1000 pesos! The kitchen was the most pathetically equiped kitchen I have ever seen in a two bedroom two bath unit - not even one mixing bowl - no oven only one dull large knife and a small serrated one - no paper towles, no salt and pepper! The pools did not feel heated at all and it appeared to be two hot tubs but only one was working and it was not even hot. Happy hour several times a day but instead of two for one like they advertise you get one larger drink with double shot! Food at resort was not a good value - other than the Wednesday night Mexican fiesta which included all you can eat buffet and drinks and entertainment - my 9 year old grandson danced on the stage for over an hour after the dancers were done. Best time to eat is brunch 11:00 to 12:30 cost is 180 pesos for buffet.
I have never seen so many people on any beach selling so much cheap stuff always approaching tourist same as at grocery store to buy time shares etc - really gets annoying but best to just say with a smile "no gracias or no dinero".
The beach in front of the hotel is not for swimming but several hotels to the south lots of people playing in the surf and sand. We spent several hours on couple days on the beach rather than at the hotel pools.
Take a horse back ride first thing in the morning quiet peaceful ride down by the estuary lots of beautiful birds and great contrast of crashing waves, sand, mountains and lush green growing by the water way - easy to walk to as well. Best deal in Cabo San Lucas on the Cabo Escape - for the four of us paid $125 (3 adults and 1 child) for 3.5 hour on boat, snorkling or kyaking and all you can eat food and drink and dancing - fun time!
Certainly not used to two maid services a day - we are used to going to Worldmark condos where we are basically left alone to our own "devices" :)
Last but not least - beds are very firm and the pillows are hard and not what one would think would be provided in such a plush place!

Room Tip: First level rooms are convenient to pools and grounds minus the views

We spent a week at this reseort, our first stay after purchasing in 2011. We had a 2 bedroom unit on the 4th floor, end unit facing west. The unit was huge as was the balcony area. The grounds were elegant and well maintained.

It is located right on the beach towards the end of hotel row on the east side of town. It is convenient to walk to the Mega store or into town. You can also wave down a local bus to take you into the town square for 8 pesos. A taxi is 50 pesos within the city. On Thursday night there is a "Art Gallery Walk" in town from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Well attended by the locals and tourists. We had dinner at Mi Casa before the Art Walk, which was very good. Be sure you sit in the garden.

The staff was very friendly and courteous at the Grand Mayan and the Early Bird Breakfast buffet at $19.99 is a real bargain.

We will look forward to our next visit to a Grand Mayan although our only complaint was "no dishwasher".

Be sure to visit the local cemetery across the street for a better insight into local culture and customs.

I have been a very happy owner of a timeshare in Cabo San Luca for over 20 years, I have not visit a timeshare deal since the original, but with time running short on my contract and the promise of a free car rental, we thought why not check out a snazzy new place in San Jose.

Rather than give you the play by play, I'll just say that my experience is similar to many others recounted here. Beautiful place, nice meal, presentation was interesting, but from the first mention of money, the aggressiveness began and escalated. The starting deal at $80k, the ending deal at 4k, so many different spins that you can't possibly keep them straight. Tried to take notes, but they wouldn't allOw it. At one point it, we were interested, but when we asked to take a contract with us to review, that was also forbidden. I don't know about you, but I don't buy a pair of shoes without at least a little shopping around, but a long term comitment, of thousands of dollars? Sorry but I need to at least consult my pillow for that,

I don't know what the story is here. Just seems to me that a normal business would have handed us a brochure and business card and let us do whatever research or review we wanted. After all it's a gorgeous place and they were looking to cut us a good deal. Just doesn't make sense that they try so hard and so aggressively to close you.

After a little googling, I know that half of what was said was not exactly true. They did however give the promised car rental voucher, after 4 hours of my time, on our vacation and I'd say we are about even.

Honest businesses do not operate this way.

Just home from a lovely week in San Jose del Cabo. We used our RCI points to book one week in a one bedroom suite. I had read that they put the RCIers on the first floor which was true in our case. I asked if there wasn't something higher that would have a better view - but of course there was not. If you stood in the corner of our deck - you could indeed see ocean. So we faced the courtyard, which was lovely. We were asked once at check-in if we'd like to book a presentation and take advantage of the discounts. We said 'not at this time.' We rec'd one followup call asking if we had thought about the presentation and we declined. And that was it. No more pressure.

The suite we had was spacious, clean with terrific maid service every day. Full kitchen including coffee pot and blender, but no oven. Our patio was a really good size and we took advantage of the full sun every morning, reading and having coffee. Our personal style is to buy a few things so we can eat a light breakfast in the morning and have coffee, then find a place or two to eat downtown the rest of the day. For us - the suite was great.

Access to the beach is very good...it's not a swimming beach, but lovely to watch waves and walk in either direction.

Pool area is lovely. Always seemed to be lots of chairs. The hot tub is - um - tepid. The pool is maybe on the cool side - compared to Puerto Vallarta's pools, but it was fine. There seemed to always be people swimming. Poolside service was just ok.

Security at the hotel was very good. Always checking for wristbands when you re-entered the hotel. Ensuring only registered guests were coming/going both at the front and beach entrances. Bellman services at the front entrance were very good. Always pleasant, always helpful.

Can't offer an opinion about the restaurants on site. We were less than thrilled with the menu(s) and pricing at the GM in Nuevo Vallarta and had made a conscious decision to eat off premises this trip.

There was very little by way of food supplies (in my opinion) in the gift shop on the premises. If you went left from the entrance of the hotel (South) a block or two there was a little convenience store across the street where you could get liquor, milk, water etc. Because we only need a few things in our room....I think I would skip Walmart or Mega and just get what we needed from this little store. We had walked to Walmart and took a cab back - which was $6. So, you pay a dollar more for the supplies, but you save an hour - depends on how much you need to buy. (We did not drink the water from the tap - we bought water for drinking and coffee making. They said their water is safe and treated; however, some people find the high mineral content upsets their stomach.)

Read the fine print and make arrangements with the conceirge before you leave home to have a ride waiting for you at the airport. They will be OUTSIDE with the name of the transportation company on a sign. It's free and very convenient. Our plane was an hour late - but they knew and were waiting for us and others to transport to the Mayan. The few minutes we had to wait till they gathered all the passengers meant we had time to have a beer and a marguartia. The return taxi to the airport will run you about $20 (260 pesos) plus a tip.

Taxis are plentiful, and relatively inexpensive. We chose to walk everywhere. No shortage of places to eat and where you end up will depend on your palate and credit card limit. A short walk towards town you will find a taco stand on the right hand side of the street - Los Claros. You order 1 or 10 tacos (or whatever)...they run around 20 - 25 pesos each. They serve beer, no hard liquor. It was clean fast and cheap and more importantly very good. Teo is nice little bar. We had good drinks and very good fish tacos there. Free wifi. Lots of upper scale places to eat. Very little in the way of happy medium though. In my opinion - eating out in San Jose is more expensive than PV.

Lots of tourist police out and about. It's very safe to walk around - never felt scared or threatened anywhere. Walk to town is about 10 - 15 mins.

Over all - the property is very nice - well maintained. Presents as a luxury resort.

Room Tip: Main floor was convenient - but not much of a view of the ocean. Try for higher up if that's im...
