We have stayed here many times and it never disappoints. Excellent service and food as ever. We will return as soon as possible! The weather was fantastic ths weekend which made our visit even better, the first sun of a dreary summer.

Wonderful location matched by excellent friendly staff, fine food and reasonably priced wines. Pity about the weather it would have made it perfect.

Room Tip: Opt for sea view room, itw ell worth the extra

We stayed at this hotel recently on a three night break. Great location overlooking Hope Cove. We had a lovely comfortable room at the rear of the Hotel. The food was outstanding the dinner in the evening had a very good selection for each course. Also it was nice also to have a good selection of vegetables and potatoes. The menu was different each evening which was good as we have stayed in other small hotels and the menu has been the same menu throughout our stay which can get quite monotonous. The breakfast each morning was substantial in that it set you up for the day and again a good choice. The staff were all very pleasant and went out of their way to ensure everything was ok. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and we will certainly be back. Keep up the good work Lantern Lodge.

Having previously enjoyed a good stay here we booked to return for a 3 night stay. The hotel is great but we discovered it has 2 huge problems & unfortunately we encountered both of them.
First the good things. The location on cliff top overlooking Bolt Tail is stunning. Staff are exremely good & meals are excellent.
Now the downside. The first problem was that we were given room 12 which is one of their most expensive rooms. After checking in we were alarmed at a loud continous vibration noise that every so often became a knocking noise before returning to the vibration. It was coming from an adjacent room which contained the filtration system for the swimming pool.
We reported the trouble and this is when we encountered the second problem - a manager who graduated from the Basil Fawlty Charm School. He refused to come to the room to hear the noise, simply stating that he had received hardly any complaints before, that the filtration system was fine and anyhow it was only operational from 8.00 in the morning until 9.30 at night and most guests were out all day so would not notice it. For someone who had no previous complaints he seemed very knowledgeable about the problem from his remote position. His attitude was completely dismissive & he seemed affronted that one of his guests shold have the temerity to complain. We said we would check in the morning if the problem persisted.
By morning all was quiet, so we assumed things had been fixed. It transpires that the vibration problem seems to occur sometime after 4pm and varies day by day. The second day the noise was slight & if we were not listening for the hum we probably would not have noticed it. On the third day it was not as bad as the first but like living with a demented bluebottle buzzing around the room. Incidentally, the manager never bothered to speak to us face to face during our entire stay.
So this is a hotel you can really enjoy - it has so many good points - provided you take steps to avoid encountering Room 12 and Basil Fawlty.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms are worth the extra - except the dreaded room 12

We made this booking as a last minute change of heart as we were going to camp. The hotel was very good value - two friends in a twin bedded room at £55 per night each including an excellent full cooked breakfast and use of the lovely pool. The staff were helpful and welcoming. The decor is quite old- fashioned but everything was very clean, and the beds were very comfortable. The pool was relaxing and the other guests were delightful!

Room Tip: It was really worth the small amount extra to have a sea view

If you like a touch of unpretentious formality, sea views, excellent food and polite and helpful staff you will love Lantern Lodge. On the other hand, if you want a lively, anything goes base for your holiday, I suggest you go somewhere else. There is very much a mature, but very friendly atmosphere. Don't be put off by the reception - there isn't one, just a bell by the kitchen door. You hang your room key on a rack in the kitchen - that's the sort of place it is. Our room was sea facing, a good size with chairs (not always a given we find), 4 poster bed, T.V., phone (no mobile signal), modern en suite and completely quiet - smashing. Breakfast is all served at your table and covers all needs (minor gripe, no apple juice). Excellent fried breakfast and marmalade in a pot. Dinner is silver service, which makes a change. Three or four choices for each course. Wine reasonably priced. Oh, and a swimming pool you can swim in, not just play.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Lantern Lodge, Hope Cove, Kingsbridge. The Lantern Lodge is a small privately run B&B situated on the cliff top right next to the South Devon Coastal path and overlooking the secluded fishing village of Hope Cove with its Devon thatch cottages, clean, sandy and safe beaches. Nearby are the old traditional towns of Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth all offering their own individual character and all offering that little extra to make your stay in the South Hams that extra special and unique. Also close by are Thurlestone, Bigbury and Dartmouth golf courses all with stunning views of the area and fantastic and challenging courses. The Lantern Lodge has its own special extras to offer including an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, double, twin and four poster rooms all with en-suite facilities and some with sea views. 9 hole putting green and plenty of car parking. There is a dining room where breakfast is served. The Lantern Lodge is so named after its attractive leafily-clad 'Lantern window.' Local folklore would have us believe that this type of window was specially designed to hold and display an illuminated lantern which could be seen from all three aspects far out to sea, acting as a beacon to safely guide home all their boats. Nowadays, our Lantern window serves very much the same purpose in welcoming back our contented guests year after year. ... more   less
