““Somewhat dated” - thank goodness it is!!!”
Reviewed 8 August 2013

We recently spent four days at the Lantern Lodge Hotel - our third visit in the last 10 years and it never fails to deliver. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed excellent food, service and comfortable surroundings from start to finish. If you're looking for a contemporary bijou hotel then this may not be for you. However, if you're looking for old fashion values, courteous service and an immaculately well kept, clean hotel in a spectacular location with a view which is 'heaven on earth' then the Lantern Lodge is for you. An earlier reviewer described it as somewhat dated but this is one of it's greatest attributes. Turn the clock back, relax and enjoy the Lantern Lodge for what it is - an unpretentious and immaculate small country hotel - so rare to find these days. We shall return.

Room Tip: Room 2 - Great, Great Views and a little better than Room 1 which doesn't have a balcony.

Just returned from our seventh or eighth visit starting to loose count now. Have been going there since 2002, and never had a bad time yet. The views are stunning and there are so many pretty walks and places to see close by. The hotel is not ultra modern, its like a cottagey homely place but thats all part of its character. The food is excellent and the staff kind and friendly. If you want nightclubs entertainment and noise don't go there. If you want peace and traquility and just want to chill out give it a try.

We were recommended this Hotel after telling somebody in Hope Cove about the awful experience we had where we had stayed the previous night and had checked out. We arrived at 7pm and was welcomed by very friendly staff especially the young lady who showed us around the rooms before agreeing a price (LIsa I think). Well what a gem. Perhaps not dated but traditional so is not to everybody's liking. We were shown several very nice rooms including the one we chose which had fantastic sea views set at a good price. It was a shame we did not arrive earlier so as to enjoy the facilities of the Hotel. But the weather was too good to come off the beach!
Breakfast was of a good standard,
What we did notice that the Hotel was spotless.
We took away tariff information to make sure we stay again.
Being shown around rooms before agreeing to stay is a much better way of checking in. Sometimes on line can be very misleading but if you looked at this Hotel on line you will not be dissapointed.

Room Tip: Excellent Sea views

From reading the other recent reviews you'd be forgiven for expecting a 5* luxury retreat but I'm afraid that wouldn't quite be accurate of the Lantern Lodge! Don't get me wrong, the owners/staff are very friendly and helpful and the location is fantastic but the hotel almost certainly hasn't been decorated since the 1980s and it is all rather tired. The breakfast is also, unfortunately, a throwback to 20 years ago... cheap sausages, dreadfully overcooked scrambled eggs, oily sausages etc. I stayed with two friends and we are in our mid-thirties but were at least 30 years younger than the next youngest guests. That isn't necessarily a bad thing but the hotel's decor and atmospehere does rather reflect that!

We had a four night stay at the Lantern Lodge Hotel, situated on the top of the cliff overlooking Hope Cove. We could not have chosen a nicer place to stay. The hospitality, food and cleanliness were all excellent. We would throughly recommend this hotel, and we would have no hesitation in making a return visit.

Although I have lived in Canada for over 40 years, I spent my childhood growing up in South Devon. My wife and I love returning to visit the area and we have tried a number of hotels over the years in Kingsbridge, Hope Cove and Thurlestone (I've tended to stay away from Salcombe - it's lovely to visit, but it's very busy and generally more expensive).
Based on this first visit in June 2013 to the Lantern Lodge, we think it is the best of the lot - a small hotel with excellent food and service. On our previous visit we stayed at the Thurlestone Hotel which is considerably more expensive and yet the food (breakfast and dinner) was better at the Lantern Lodge !
Be sure to get a sea view room - well worth the premium for an idyllic view !
And if you like walking, this is one of the best areas in the world - the South Devon coast path (right in front of the hotel) is truly amazing - walk south to Salcombe and take the ferry from South Sands into the town and then bus or taxi return; or walk north to Thurlestone and Bantham Sands.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room - worth the premium

Back again with our best friends to enjoy the lovely views, the superb food and the friendly service.
Nothing much changes which is all to the good. Visited RHS Rosemoor and several NT house and gardens during our stay.
We hope that the cliff top walk to Thurlestone will be fully open soon.
Be back next year , god willing.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Lantern Lodge, Hope Cove, Kingsbridge. The Lantern Lodge is a small privately run B&B situated on the cliff top right next to the South Devon Coastal path and overlooking the secluded fishing village of Hope Cove with its Devon thatch cottages, clean, sandy and safe beaches. Nearby are the old traditional towns of Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth all offering their own individual character and all offering that little extra to make your stay in the South Hams that extra special and unique. Also close by are Thurlestone, Bigbury and Dartmouth golf courses all with stunning views of the area and fantastic and challenging courses. The Lantern Lodge has its own special extras to offer including an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, double, twin and four poster rooms all with en-suite facilities and some with sea views. 9 hole putting green and plenty of car parking. There is a dining room where breakfast is served. The Lantern Lodge is so named after its attractive leafily-clad 'Lantern window.' Local folklore would have us believe that this type of window was specially designed to hold and display an illuminated lantern which could be seen from all three aspects far out to sea, acting as a beacon to safely guide home all their boats. Nowadays, our Lantern window serves very much the same purpose in welcoming back our contented guests year after year. ... more   less
