“2 day break in Hope Cove”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

We also booked too late to get a sea view room which was a shame as the views are stunning. But everything else was superb from the friendly staff to the fantastic dinners. Breakfast was pretty good too and we certainly didn't need any lunch. My only gripe would be with the one sausage with the full English breakfast which was a bit ordinary and one would have thought a good local alternative could have been sourced. But hey if this is the only gripe then one really can't complain. At the bar I sampled a locally brewed beer called Shingle Bay which was also excellent. We will be back. Would thoroughly recommend to anyone not on a diet!

We booked too late to get a sea view room but it was cheaper and as it happened we felt really at ease sitting in any of the general areas when we wanted to see more of the outdoors. We were in room 17 which is really spacious and comfortable and has easy access to the wonderful swimming pool. Even though we were there in May it was warm enough to have the sliding doors open on to the courtyard with sunchairs. Even sat out there once or twice.

Lots of choice on the menus and lovely friendly service from the staff. They work as a well oiled team and make you feel so at home. I don't usually feel at home at hotels. Great service without fuss.

I would love to go again but we are doing the South West Coast Path so have to move on until the final 170 miles are done......

Room Tip: Hope Cove is stunningly beautiful so get a sea view room if you can. If not, it is not the end of t...

We had a great little mini break at this lovely hotel on the cliff top. Friendly staff, clean rooms and great service. We stayed in Room 12 which has a lovely seaview, ensuite shower room and lots of storage space. It also has a four poster bed and extra seating which is great after a blustery walk to Bolt Tail. Love the heated swimming pool with the mural and greenery. There is also a seating area with books galore, an area by the window to have a cream tea, a well stocked bar and a pretty dining area. You can even play boules on the lawn!
Hope Cove is a beautiful spot - pretty harbour beaches, cliff walks and a great pub if you enjoy your fish and chips. We went on a little day trip to Salcombe as well, but was nice to come back to the quiet of Hope Cove after wading through the tourists in Salcombe!

Room Tip: Seaview rooms are definitely worth the little extra! We stayed in Room 12 which also had an ensuite...

Our stop lived up to all our expectations. We had seen this hotel when we were staying in the area a couple of years ago and thought we would try it for a last minute short break over Easter.
Spotlessly clean, friendly helpful staff, well cooked good food with lots of choice, great little swimming pool - situation perfect for stunning views of Bolt Head, Inner Hope and out to sea.
Only downside - we had to leave too soon; but before we did we booked in for another mini break later in the summer.

Room Tip: We stayed in an downstairs room this time, which was lovely and would suit if you didn't want to...

This was a really pleasant treat, to find a place in a beautiful location, right on the Coast Path, that offered old fashioned attention to service and friendliness. The room we had overlooked the Bay and was well appointed and comfortable, with a lot of space and good facilities and spotlessly clean. Dinner for £20 was nicely presented, again with attention to detail, very well prepared and delicious and they have a good wine list for reasonable prices. We will return to stay even though our journey along the Path is taking us away.

Room Tip: Sea view worth it

This is the third time that we have stayed at the Lantern Lodge hotel in the last 10 years. We have always booked a sea view room with magnificent views across the English Channel towards Plymouth, if your lucky you will see the Eddystone lighthouse on the horizon. The rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. The food is of high quality and freshly cooked and served piping hot. The full English breakfast will ensure that you last until dinner. The four course dinner is the highlight of the day with ample choice of dishes to satisfy all palates. The service is personal and efficient, with attention always ensuring a minimum of waiting between courses. The hotel does not accept young people under 12 years of age and pets are not accepted. As a result there is not an increase in the cost of staying during school holidays. On this occasion we met some delightful people who are also regulars at the hotel. On inspection of the visitors comments it is clear that there are a considerable number of regulars who come back time and again. This speaks for itself, the Lantern Lodge is a delightful small hotel providing excellent accommodation, food and service. Why wouldn't anyone wish to return.

Room Tip: Always aim for a sea view room the views are superb

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Lantern Lodge, Hope Cove, Kingsbridge. The Lantern Lodge is a small privately run B&B situated on the cliff top right next to the South Devon Coastal path and overlooking the secluded fishing village of Hope Cove with its Devon thatch cottages, clean, sandy and safe beaches. Nearby are the old traditional towns of Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth all offering their own individual character and all offering that little extra to make your stay in the South Hams that extra special and unique. Also close by are Thurlestone, Bigbury and Dartmouth golf courses all with stunning views of the area and fantastic and challenging courses. The Lantern Lodge has its own special extras to offer including an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, double, twin and four poster rooms all with en-suite facilities and some with sea views. 9 hole putting green and plenty of car parking. There is a dining room where breakfast is served. The Lantern Lodge is so named after its attractive leafily-clad 'Lantern window.' Local folklore would have us believe that this type of window was specially designed to hold and display an illuminated lantern which could be seen from all three aspects far out to sea, acting as a beacon to safely guide home all their boats. Nowadays, our Lantern window serves very much the same purpose in welcoming back our contented guests year after year. ... more   less
