Having heard so much for so many years about the landmark guest farm in the Karoo, Melton Wold, which so many children now adults have enjoyed, we finally got to visit, and graciously they accepted our booking for lunch (it was a Sunday in Winter and Father's Day). We were passing, so did not overnight, just wanted lunch and Tony who manages the guest house portion of this venue was warm, friendly and welcoming (we had booked in advance). We were the sole diners in the dining room, for a very pleasant farm lunch, and he kindly showed us around. The owners who have considerable business interests were on site but at a location in another part of the property entertaining a group of local residents. What can we say? Sadly the money has not been spent on the guest farm side, and is dated, clean, but completely without soul, spirit, warmth and character, in spite of the scenic location. Having visited many long established guest farm and country hotels over the years, this side of the business is obviously not their focus, and frankly those with happy memories, should enjoy them, but there are many other better options at every price point that I would recommend. Sad, but true. Were it not for Tony, we would have left immediately, and frankly as the owners appear to be doing very well in their other business interests, they should make a decision to either invest or close this part of the business. We can understand why guests loved it, wonderfully situated and thats about it.

Good Morning Lew! Thank you for your review. We regret that your brief luncheon visit to Melton Wold was not everything that you wished for, or expected. In order for you to experience the 'soul, spirit, warmth and character' of Melton Wold, we really urge you to return to Melton Wold for a longer stay in order that you can experience what a real gem our guest house is. In fact you need to experience what an awesome venue we have on the farm as a whole! I have absolutely no doubt that you will depart from Melton Wold having had a completely different impression of the 'soul, spirit, warmth and character' of Melton Wold, even in the middle of winter! I make an effort to interact with all our guests and can assure you that my personal experience is that our guests leave happy and excited about their visit to Melton Wold. The majority promising to return … and they do! We have a unique venue! Please return to experience it. I promise that you will leave with a difference impression compared to that when you came to enjoy your Sunday luncheon with us! Kind Regards - Tony

Beautiful place. Great food and very friendly staff. We stayed over for one night on our way to Cape Town. Awesome to see the stars at night. The Karoo sheep braai was excellent. Will definitely go back

We've been visiting from New Zealand, after a ~6 hour trip from Paarl, upon our arrival, Tony opened the door even before we've reached the reception with a friendly firm handshake. Tony lit a fireplace and paid particular attention to bar requests - after the trip - a well-understood entity.
We were just too late for dinner, real Karoo lamb, even though Tony left some portions aside for us. Unlucky.
The old wooden floors - perfectly polished - had a characteristic footstep echoing effect through the high lead printed ceilings. We soon realised it is much quieter to walk on socks. Never the less, this was only for a short while, before warm water baths were filled - well half. One does not need that much water...
We opted not to lid the private fireplace in our rooms, as the warm blankets - and electrical sheets - were quite sufficient.
A brisk walk over the first ridge, presented a vast expanse of springbok in the distance as well as a Nyala (?) a mere 50 meters away.
Friendly staff served breakfast, and similarly, the reception was ready with my part to pay.
Do not expect glimmer and gold, that is for the city; this is real warm heartiness, isolated from the rush.

We had a great visit on this lovely farm from 3 to 7 April 2018.
The rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean. It was great being woken up by a cuppa in the mornings.
If you like playing croquet, bowls, walks, biking and much more, this is definitely the place for you. The family were constantly busy having loads of fun as there is so much to do on the farm. Ideal place to get away from the hustle & bustle.
The breakfast, lunch & dinners were scrumptious and very tasty. The Karoo lamb was deliciously prepared and we were spoilt by the chef & staff in the diningroom, especially by Elsabe, who looked after us & our grandchildren at meal times.
Melton Wold's manager Tony, is an excellent host and him and his team made us feel welcome all the time. The owners, Ronel & Willem were very hospitable and welcoming too.
If you want a true Karoo farm experience, Melton Wold is for sure the guest farm to go to.

We enjoyed a few perfect autumn days at Melton Wold. Our stay was characterised and made special by the excellent food, early morning coffee in bed, afternoon naps, "stoepsittery", stargazing, huge crystal-clear swimming pool, game viewing, long walks in the veld, peace and quiet, hospitality of the kitchen and cleaning staff as well as Willem, Ronel, Tony, Brenda, Juan, and the friendly dogs. We plan to return in winter (to enjoy the many fireplaces) and again in autumn next year (always a special time in the Karoo!).

Room Tip: We stayed in #34 and the room exceeded our expectations! It was spacious and quiet.
