We went here last night(15/4/14), on a recommendation and we had a lovely meal.
For starter, Anne had parsnip and cumin soup and I had whitebait. After a very slight confusion between soup and brie( very quickly sorted)we found both to be excellent.
For mains, Anne chose plaice and chips while I opted for pan fried skate.
Both were very nicely cooked and presented, and, most importantly, very very tasty!
We would most certainly recommend this place if you want good wholesome food with no pretensions of grandeur!

Lovely bar area with a large open fire in winter. Food in the restaurant is excellent. Interesting art gallery and jewellery cabinet. Very friendly staff. Best hostelry on Mersea Island. Good parking.

We went with friends one weekday evening, when the pub was not very busy. I was surprised when we were seated at an "OK" table, when one seemed to be free nearer the window. The menu was tempting, with sufficient choice. I liked my chicken pie (followed by treacle tart) but the portions were very large and accompanying vegetables unexciting. I couldn't have managed three courses. Service was friendly but sometimes not all that prompt (we waited for top-up drinks for a while). Worth another visit sometime.

Good food and a lovely atmosphere. It felt like we were on holiday sitting outside the pub admiring the views at the front. We ate in the restaurant, which has a nautical feel and had good fish and chips. We will be visiting again..

First good weather for ages... what better than a trip to the coast, some exercise, and pub-lunch. All went to plan until the pub. Food very average pub-grub. Staff generally good, but owner/manageress extremely rude and unhelpful... bizarrely using her own car to block in customers, then asking them to prove they had bought food and drink before lettting them leave! I've never seen anything like it. So, if it's busy... be warned, and watch where you park. Better still, go somewhere else.
