“Gem of a classic English B&B”
Reviewed 4 April 2013

Even with not arriving at Culm Vale until 10pm after a long drive, we were still welcomed and settled into our room by the hostess. She showed us where everything was an offered us the code for the free wifi. Someone has mentioned the speed was slow, but we found it to be quite the opposite with excellent speed. We stayed in the Pink Room and had a fantastic night's sleep. Comfy bed, lovely pillows and fresh, clean linen. Plenty of towels, tea, coffee and biscuits were supplied. Unlike most hotel rooms, the room wasn't stuffy and was lovely and well-aired. We arrived for breakfast at 8.45am and were greeted warmly by the hostess. We were given a choice of freshly-cooked breakfasts, cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurts to choose from. Fresh tea and coffee was also supplied.

Culm vale is a traditional Victorian property with many of its original features. The decor really helps to create the overall charm of the property. People who don't like quirky and original decor are better off sticking to the magnolia and dull tones of a budget hotel.

Thanks Culm Vale for a lovely stay!

Overall, this is a great place to stay. We liked it so much that we stayed an extra night.

The service is both friendly and flexible.

The breakfasts were excellent, ALL diets are happily catered for. Yes: really, ALL diets.

The room was warm and comfortable.
Housekeeping was highly effective, thorough and very, very responsive.

Comments have been made here about the permanent resident. Yes, he is a little eccentric but he is certainly not dirty. If you do meet him, you'll find that he is polite and friendly but not intrusive.

Friendly but uninstrusive with an excellent breakfast. This is a good value B&B with plenty of character. There is also a community run pub opnly 5 mins away which serves food every evenening bar Mondays.

I can clearly reinforce the opinion of ramz_2011. It's still old and dirty here, the rooms have a smell, the urin-spot is still there, the old shower is dribbling softly and we had several clothes moths in our room (the golden one). We thought, we booked ensuite, but hadn't. Our mistake, so we had to use the facilities with a (sorry) dirty old man. The toilet had spots of, I dare not tell, on it, and of course the hostess could not go in there every hour if, well, this person had a go, but it still was repelling. Maybe the ensuite room is clean, we cannot tell.

The hostess didn't introduce herself at our arrival, but was apart from that friendly enough. The breakfast took a bit long and the fried egg wasn't properly done. I don't know why this is a 3* B&B. Maybe someone got dazzled by the nice surroundings - the garden, the pool, pictures of the rooms. We were, that's why we booked and wouldn't do it again.

this place has central heating but it has no effect, we we freezing the whole time we stayed.
and that was at the beginning of may.
we were given the rosey room its like a time warp- 1970's sink and furniture and no en suite
you could put up with that, but the beds are terrible(all three of them in in this room) and should have been scrapped years ago.

the place is clean and the breakfast was ok we booked by internet for two nights but left ASAP and stayed in a premier inn in newton abbott.

the lady who runs culm vale seemed pleasant enough but the room/bed experience is my worst
in 30 years travelling round th UK

do yourself a favour spend a few quid more and use a premier inn

A very warm welcome, we stayed in the Chalet, which actually is over the garage, it was clean and comfortable, my wife loved it," very quirky". The breakfast was excellent and set you up for the day. The pool was clean though weather wasn't up to much, so never actually had a swim......
