“A Nice Place to Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2013

Stayed in the Rose room which did not have an en suite therefore used the shared bathroom right next door - not an issue at all. Whilst the room was a bit 'feminine' in decor to say the least it was not an issue, the pink room was even more so!. The room was clean and the facilities were OK, the bed was too soft offering little support and the TV was rather small and should be mounted on the wall rather than on a small table however the big bonus was having free wi-fi in the room which was highly appreciated. The bath robe in the room for use between room and bathroom looked as if it had seen better days, I'd rather not have one available than seeing it hanging against the door.!.The host was welcoming, the parking was adequate and the breakfast was good, the decor throughout the guest areas was done to a 50's/ 60's era but tastefully done which made a 'nice' change from other establishments but do be careful not going overboard too much more!.
Would I stay there again? - Yes of course!, overall a nice stay!.

Very warm welcome - we stayed in the pink room which had a shared bathroom right next door which was fine. Start of June and the wisteria just past its best but gorgeous none the less. No magnolia paint in this house - all vibrant colours or cottage style. If you want a faceless anonymous room then go to a hotel chain. If you want good value slightly quirky B&B then stay here. The home made yoghourt and home laid eggs were delicious as was the cooked breakfast. We chatted with the permanent resident over breakfast who we thought was interesting and perfectly pleasant even if a little eccentric. We also met the resident African grey parrot who seemed to enjoy perching on the landlady's shoulder!

Convenient for visiting Exeter.

This place is out in the country a few miles from Exeter, close enough for work but far enough for peace and quiet. I had the en suite family room (single occupancy) the double bed that I used really needs updating I did manage a nights sleep but the bed and frame have had their day. That aside the host was pleasant and friendly and made me feel welcome. I had to leave before breakfast was normally served even though the host did offer to make me some. All in all it was an enjoyable stay and will probably return next time I work in Exeter.

Even with not arriving at Culm Vale until 10pm after a long drive, we were still welcomed and settled into our room by the hostess. She showed us where everything was an offered us the code for the free wifi. Someone has mentioned the speed was slow, but we found it to be quite the opposite with excellent speed. We stayed in the Pink Room and had a fantastic night's sleep. Comfy bed, lovely pillows and fresh, clean linen. Plenty of towels, tea, coffee and biscuits were supplied. Unlike most hotel rooms, the room wasn't stuffy and was lovely and well-aired. We arrived for breakfast at 8.45am and were greeted warmly by the hostess. We were given a choice of freshly-cooked breakfasts, cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurts to choose from. Fresh tea and coffee was also supplied.

Culm vale is a traditional Victorian property with many of its original features. The decor really helps to create the overall charm of the property. People who don't like quirky and original decor are better off sticking to the magnolia and dull tones of a budget hotel.

Thanks Culm Vale for a lovely stay!

Overall, this is a great place to stay. We liked it so much that we stayed an extra night.

The service is both friendly and flexible.

The breakfasts were excellent, ALL diets are happily catered for. Yes: really, ALL diets.

The room was warm and comfortable.
Housekeeping was highly effective, thorough and very, very responsive.

Comments have been made here about the permanent resident. Yes, he is a little eccentric but he is certainly not dirty. If you do meet him, you'll find that he is polite and friendly but not intrusive.

Friendly but uninstrusive with an excellent breakfast. This is a good value B&B with plenty of character. There is also a community run pub opnly 5 mins away which serves food every evenening bar Mondays.
