I first stayed at this hotel in May 2010. Back then it seemed like a decent deal, nothing special, but a relative bargain at 475 pesos/night for a newish room and a decent location (a short walk from Juarez where there are lots of restaurants). I am not sure what changed, probably the management, but when we stayed here again last week, it was terrible. We had made a reservation by phone for 3 nights a few days before and had requested one of the newer rooms. By phone they said they didn't have a newer room for all 3 nights but they would see what they could do. When we checked in we were told they only had a newer room for the first night. We asked if we could have an older room (375 pesos per night) for all 3 nights instead because since we were getting up early to go to play in a hockey tournament the next day day, we did not want the hassle of switching rooms. The receptionist said there wasn't an older room available for all 3 nights so we would have to switch the next day. We said okay, got some dinner, and tried to get some sleep. Unfortunately that was impossible. The pillows were the least comfortable pillows I have ever encountered, which made it very hard to fall asleep. And as it was a Friday night, the other guests were being super loud until 4 in the morning. We thought about complaining, but even other guests were knocking on the doors of the loud rooms trying to get them to quiet down with no success.
In the morning, we got up with very little sleep, took our things with us in the car, as we didn't have enough time to switch rooms, and returned the key to reception, letting them know we'd be back in the evening to switch to a different room. During the day, we thought about switching to a different place, but as it was a very weekend in Puebla, the hotel where most of the people in our group were staying was already booked and we didn't have time to go searching for a place to stay.
So after a long day at an outdoor inline hockey tournament, we arrive back to the hotel at about 9:30 at night, and tell the receptionist that we are ready to move to the other room. The receptionist, the same mentally incompetent girl who attended us the day before, tells us with a big, inconsiderate smile on her face and without any apology that there aren't any rooms left. I begin to complain that we have a reservation, but in the end we decide it's not worth it. There aren't rooms and we shouldn't waste time begging for a room at a place where we won't get any sleep anyways. I have my suspicions the receptionist realized the first day that there weren't enough rooms for us, and was just too unprofessional to apologize and let us know then, but then again, maybe even realizing then that there weren't enough rooms might have been beyond her mental capacity.
So without any place to stay at 9:30 at night we have to go searching for a place during a very busy weekend. The first place we checked was the very expensive Best Western around the corner, and of course they had no vacancy. In the end we got lucky, and ended up staying at the Hotel Plaza Las Fuentes, which isn't so centrally located, but is a much nicer place. It ended up being 793 for the night, but the rate included a delicious breakfast for two each morning (coffee, choice of juice or fruit, and several dishes to choose from including enchiladas and chilaquiles) and we could actually get some sleep there, which made it more than worth it. The staff was actually helpful and competent which was a great change, and the atmosphere was much more civil (no drunks singing at the top of their lungs in the middle of the night). The shower also was nice and hot and had great water pressure which was perfect for me after coming back from playing a hockey game.
So unless you like terrible service, the bargain prices at the Panamerican are not worth it at all. Save yourself some sleepless nights, and go straight to Plaza Las Fuentes.
