“Weld Arms, don't let yourself down ...”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

Lovely pub, beautifully decorated and furnished. Our evening meal was excellent. Our bedroom was lovely .. however the bathroom let it down. Although clean, with nice fluffy towels and smart toiletries, the tile grouting in the shower cubicle was black and mouldy, nothing that a bottle of mildrew spray wouldn't sort in about 10 minutes. In fact if I stayed again I'd probably be tempted to take a bottle with me as it was pretty grim! Seems such a shame to make the room so lovely and then needlessly let it down for want of a bit of elbow grease. Don't let this stop you staying there though, the staff are lovely!

We are travelling in late July and after trying Weymouth, Preston, and finding everything booked we continued driving passing B&B's all with no vacancies. We saw The Weld Arms and stopped and enquired. 1 room left. Took it. Our room was fine, our evening meal, a delight, the presentation far beyond what we thought, an acoustic singer with guitarist entertained in the main bar, volume and tone in keeping with the surroundings and adding to the atmosphere. After dinner, looking for a short walk to left the hotel found an old school building and then a cluster of quaint and charming thatched cottages clustered together. A delightful walk. Bed comfortable breakfast the next morning was delicious, excellently served and presented. The staff were considerate, helpful and friendly. The total experience was exactly what we wanted. Thank you so much and if we pass that way again, we'll be there.

Room Tip: There is a small stair case leading to the top floor - without being asked one of the staff arrived...

From reading the other reviews I think we must have been staying in a different hotel. Admittedly we are Australians and we were looking for the typical quirky English country pub experience. We were also travelling in the winter off season and we were the only ones staying at the hotel. The Weld Arms ticked all the boxes for us - very, very old building, thatched roof, low doorways, narrow staircase, log fire, bedroom floors that sloped in every direction, stuffed pig's head on the wall, warm beer (I thought they all drank it that way!), great English breakfast, next door to a real castle and even the local squire having a drink while his rather large dog sat at his feet - exactly what we wanted. The rooms were quaint and very clean with tastefully renovated en suites. I find it difficult to understand the comments regarding the food unless they have a new chef - our evening meals were absolutely wonderful. I guess that the English locals would think this is just another old country pub - for us it was perfect.

Beer was warm, service slow and my steak was over cooked and positively dull. So sad as this used to be a fantastic pub. I would wait till it changes management and try again. The locAtion is amazing nod attracts thousands of people a year, so there is no excuse to cock this up. Grip it now nod make us all happy.

I have visited The Weld Arms many times over a long period of time. The management teams change frequently, they often go bust and standards vary dramatically. The pub seems to be at a very low ebb at the moment and heading downwards.

The food is of poor quality and ridiculously overpriced. We paid £15 for two very sorry looking sandwiches. The locals tend not to use the pub because of the high cost of drinks. Outside of the tourist season, East Lulworth is like a ghost town.

If you are heading for the coast, don't bother stopping here. West Lulworth, two miles further on, is not cheap but you have more choice.

We went their for my birthday; warm welcome with a live band, with plenty if seating (but still busy)we all thought that we would like a pudding, so we ordered six, we couldn't believe the quality of the food that was being given to us...simply amazing! And it was given to us in about 10 minutes, for six of us, outstanding! We stayed a couple of nights, we all had a really good night sleep. The breakfast was yet again lovely. Would recommend to any body!

Was disappointed with The Weld, we went for a belated valentines dinner with parents, as we hadn't been here before.
The position and interior is lovely, and we were given the table by the fire, which was lovely. Everything started lovely, nice waitress, starters was good - Baked Camembert, Spring Rolls & mushrooms, these were lovely, especially the mushrooms with garlic and cheese.
Then, is all went down hill very quickly - we waited 45 minutes for our main course, with no mention of apology for the long delay, we had to ask how long before we can eat. Nothing we ordered would take so long to cook, were we forgotten??? We ordered steak, rare, only takes 4 mins, baked camembert, only takes 4 minutes, Beef Bourguignon & mushroom stroganoff. The only dish that was nice was the baked camembert. The stroganoff we had to send back it was cold, it came to the table with 'skin' on the top, which obviously had been sitting on the side for a while, not good. Th e steak was so tiny was not worth the £14, and the Beef Bourguignon was cold.
My parents own a BB and would have liked to have recommended The Weld to their customers, but we will not be doing this now.
Such a shame, but we will not be returning.
