“Business Trip”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

This review is for a day business trip only, but it is always relevant.
We have used this venue for business for a few years now and i can confirm that the facilities are always excellent, lunch and drinks service on time. The venue is truly first class and i would recommend staying here.

We were staying at Calcot Manor's sister hotel near Bibury and decided to take a drive south towards Tetbury, calling in at Calcot Manor for a cup of coffee and early lunch. Very impressive buildings as we wandered round trying to find reception which we did and were guided towards the lounge area by friendly staff. This room was filled with rather comfortable looking sofas but also buggies, toddlers and babies making a fair amount of noise as little ones do at this age. The decibel level seemed not to bother the parents who were obviously enjoying themselves while their children played around them on the carpet. We then enquired where else we could enjoy a quiet cup of coffee, and were pointed in the direction of the Gumstool Bar/Restaurant. The fire was nearly out, giving only a modicum of warmth on a cold, wet and rainy day so much coaxing with logs of wood in a basket next to the fire place made a bit of a difference. No problem, the staff did not seem to have noticed. I love making fires. We were the only couple in the Gumstool as far as we could make out - just as our tray of coffee arrived -by now nearly midday, the doors opened and more buggies, babies, toddlers and young children accompanied by their parents walked in. Gulping our coffee down and leaving the warmth of the now roaring log fire, we headed for the door back to the car. Calcot Manor looks to be a good place to stay - child friendly is most definitely high on their agenda - not ours though. Neither was lunch in the Gumstool.

We have just had a lovely stay again at Calcot . Staff so so helpful, we had to change our booking twice (due to child care issues) and nothing was to much trouble. Lovely room , lovely food , great spa and treatments . We travel frequently and this is up there with one of the best. You feel like it is a real treat.

Room Tip: Had different rooms each time we have stayed all lovely. We were in a garden loft room . Lovely and...

We had a fantastic weekend with our kids. The kids were lively and the staff treated them really well!! Had the most fantastic meal we've ever had at the Conservatory restaurant. I gather the chef worked at the Fat Duck. We've eaten there before but I preferred this meal. I'm involved in Childcare and thought the playzone was excellent.

Myself and 2 friends decided to have a relaxing pampering weekend away without our husbands and I suggested Calcot as my family have stayed there loads of times before and had a wonderful time. Having booked 2 rooms with Calcot directly I booked a third through Pride of Britain. Instead of booking the third room for 2 nights, it was only booked for the Friday night (and I was lead to believe that this was impossible as a minimum 2 night stay is required at weekends). The unhelpful Manager on duty said that the hotel was fully booked and there wasn't anything they could do as it was all Pride of Britain's fault (and he seemed to imply mine also for booking through them even though this is what the Calcot website suggests). He did offer to book my friend into Barnsley House some 30 minutes away on the Saturday, assuring me there would be no problem with her checking in late at night (around 11pm).

She still had to check out of her room at 11am Saturday morning and so was effectively then homeless for the rest of the day (she had come down by train and so had no car to shuttle between the 2 hotels). She was of course able to use our rooms although having packed the chuildren off to the kids club we were all then deprived of the afternoon naps we had all been looking forward to - her in particular having a 6 month old baby!

A taxi collected her at 10.30pm to take her to Calcot's sister hotel - On arrival she discovered she hadn't been booked in to Barnsley House but was in the Village Pub (also owned by Calcot). No-one was around to check her in and she was left alone outside in the dark in an area with poor phone reception. When she eventually found someone to help her, they informed her that the bath and shower in the room didn't work and there was no hot water and the room shouldn't have been rented. Cleraly she would never have agreed to stay there had this been made known and would have chosen somewhere locally instead where she could easliy have gobne to in the afternoon and had that all important sleep and a relaxing time before dinner!

As a result the weekend was ruined for us all and she had a miserable weekend. I was mortified having booked it for her as a birthday treat - some treat! Although Calcot waived the price of her room on the Friday (at our request) and didn't charge her for the horrendous room on Saturday, it didn't really help as we weren't looking for a budget deal, we were looking for what should have been a lovely pampering weekend.

Will never book through Pride of Britain again, will certainly never stay at Barnsley House if they book people into rooms without working bathrooms. Such a shame as Calcot was my family's favourite hotel and it is now spoiled for me.

Our large room was in the courtyard with a large bathroom and a good shower (no shower cap provided) Our friends did not have a shower in their room so it is good to find out in advance what is available as my husband has had two new hips and baths are out. We had an excellent dinner in their private dining room which is just of the main dining room so not so private. It is important that it you want a relaxing time do not book at half term. I do not think that I have ever seen so many children charging around a dining room at breakfast. I had an excellent facial at the Spa but did not go to the pool as I could hear all those children!!

Room Tip: We liked our room in the courtyard

My husband and I have been on a number of Spa days at Calcot Manor and dined at The Gumstool many times. We only live 10 miles down the road so it wouldn't seem appropriate to stay overnight.

However my husband booked us in for a night for my birthday and we werent disappointed, in fact we didnt want to leave. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we received exceptional service.

We were placed in the Cambridge Room which is situated away from the main building. With a little patio area you walk into a porch and your bathroom is downstairs and gorgeous room upstairs. With beautiful natural beams and understated decor the room really had the wow factor. The bathroom had a more modern feel with a huge stand alone bath and large separate shower.

On the porch table was a birthday card and bottle of champagne which was a really thoughtful touch.

We used the spa facilities all afternoon and I enjoyed a hot stones massage.

We asked if we could change dinner in the evening from The Conservatory to The Gumstool. This again was no problem. We were also a little late for dinner as we were too busy enjoying the cocktails at the bar.

Thank God for the umbrellas which are at the entrance of every building. There was a proper storm the night we stayed and to be honest that just added to magic of snuggling in our lovely room.

Breakfast again was wonderful. Good quality locally sourced ingredients.

After breakfast we walked the Trim Trail before using the facilities once again. When you check out you also receive a little bag, complete with water, a brochure and chocolate for the journey home.

Everyone need a little Calcot in their life and even though it is only 10 miles away, we will be back!!
