“Very nice hotel with fabulous spa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 April 2010

Calcot Manor is very impressive and there is not much to complain about at all. This last visit was my second and I have to say though that I enjoyed it far more in the Summer two years ago when the sun shone. This is because the hotel is geared towards the outdoors.

By this I mean 1) There are lovely grounds with a 3+km trim trail 2) You can hire bikes to explore the local area 3) There is the most magnificent outdoor hot tub and relaxation area 4) There is a nice beer garden outside the hotel's very own gastro-pub 5) They have an outdoor pool and children's playground. Many of these can't be enjoyed if it is cold, raining or outside of the Summer season.

As well as these positives potential guests should be warned that most of the rooms (if not all) are in buildings separate to the main house. This isn't a bad thing but the fact that you have to go outside to go to the restaurants and spa (not a short dash) may not be for everyone.

Our room was in a row of cottage that backed on to the main tetbury road. The room itself (up some stairs) was lovely but the real stand out was the bathroom. It was huge, very well decorated and had an excellent shower. My only gripe is that these cottages back onto the main Tetbury road and there was a noise from cars and lorries that was pretty loud through the night.

One of the best things about the hotel is the spa. The staff are friendly and very professional, the range of products on sale (aromatherapy associates) are excellent, the relaxation area is spacious and the swimming area is beautifully done. As mentioned above the hot tub delivers the X factor to the spa.

The main restaurant has a great atmosphere and once again lends itself to the summer very well. The food was a bit inconsistent on this trip with my choices (sweetbreads and fillet steak on the bone) only average. However, the person I was entertaining had quail and then the duck which tasted beautiful.

In terms of value the spa package I was on was good value as the price (£350 per night) included money towards a spa treatment and dinner. There is no doubt however that Calcot Manor would not be within the average person's budget.

We chose Calcot for a family celebration because we enjoyed a previous stay. On this visit we were accompanied by our three children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and some friends.
The "highlight" was a dinner in the Garden Room on the Saturday evening. The staff went out of their way to make this a most enjoyable occasion.Excellent and thank you to them all.
Very well run hotel with clearly committed staff who enjoy welcoming and looking after guests.

My husband treated me to a stay at Calcot Manor for Christmas. We wanted to have a nice and relaxing break before our baby arrived. We made use of the deal to stay on a Sunday evening which included spa and evening meal vouchers.

The maternity massage was superb and I would recommend it to other mums-to-be, especially those in their last trimester who are suffering with aches. The indoor pool was very warm which was also nice and relaxing although probably not great if you wanted to do a proper workout. We also walked around the trim trail in the extensive grounds. It would be good to return in the summer and use the outside facilities such as the outdoor pool and tennis courts.

The staff were all very polite, friendly and helpful. The meal in the Conservatory restaurant was very nice.

We had a large room (Chester) in the manor itself. It was tastefully decorated, the bed was very comfortable and the overall we couldn't fault it.

The price means that we can't become frequent visitors but we were impressed with how well it was catered for families, so maybe we will be able to go again one day...

We have stayed at calcot manor before about 5 years ago before we had children and were looking forward to returning with our toddlers. We had a fantastic time - the best break we've had since becoming parents. The staff are very welcoming to families and make it easy - very tolerant indeed. The room was lovely and a good size, the girls were in a seperate adjoining room but there was plenty of room for them to run about in our room, really nicely furnished and decorated, big bathroom and lots of extras like changing mat and washing up liquid for bottles so you don't need to bring it from home. We weren't sure how our children would adapt to the creche - they really enjoyed it and had a great time- the creche is fantastic, its ofsted registered and has everything you'd find in a nursery. there were around 7 children and babies max in the creche when we were there (ours went in the creche between 1 hour and 3.5 hours per day - the 3.5 hours was over 2 sessions). they did lots of drawing, playdough, sticking, playing and one of our daughters was asking to go back for more playing in the evening when it was shut! NB you should book in advance for the creche at busy times as they take a max of 26 children including a max of 6 babies. We had some time off to go to the spa or just relax for once! We had babysitting in the evening from the creche staff. Spa is excellent, treatments are very good indeed. Childrens food very good not your usual fish fingers and staff very tolerant of little ones. We had dinner in the gumstool once and the conservatory twice. Food is good - its not michelin starred fine dining but nor does it pretend to be - its fish and meat wood grilled in the conservatory and more pub style food in the gumstool. All very tasty. Breakfast excellent.
Nice childrens play area outside, swimming pool is open to children for 1.5 hours per day, you can hire bikes but we didn't get round to it.

Overall - a fantastic time (we were meant to stay for 2 nights but stayed an extra one we were enjoying it so much) and a very welcome rest for harried parents! If you haven't got young children you will still have a great time here but if you have you will find it a real tonic. Not cheap but well worth it.

We came to escape London's hectic pace for a weekend and Calcot provided the perfect place to do so. Our stay was just beautifully relaxing, spa treatments helped a lot too and the snow provided a fairytale setting!
The team is fantastic, the property is beautiful, the spa is excellent and there is very little more you could ask for - there is even a choice of a country pub or conservatory for dining, so pack your swimming costume (we didn't brave the outside hot tub, something to do next time) and head for Calcot for a truly relaxing stay!

Went on the `stay four nights - pay for three` package from Monday night to Friday morning which is good value. Everything was perfect - lovely room good food & service that was first class. The staff were all so professional & helpful yet remained friendly as well. We ate in the Gumstool all the time because after a full breakfast we couldn't face a full formal evening dinner. There is so much to choose from in the Gumstool from light bites to full meals and all very well cooked and presented. And then a relaxing evening in front of a log fire-what more can you ask! Spent some time in the spa pool which was lovely & warm! There were babies & young children at the hotel but in rooms away from the main building (family suites) and so they were no trouble to us and they only have a limited time slot in the spa. Lots of interesting places to visit in the area although the hotel is four miles from the nearest town (Tetbury)
Can't wait for our next visit.

We booked this hotel as a couple to get away from the kids for the weekend and enjoy a spa break. However the hotel was full of children, in saying that they were all very well behaved and we had wished we had taken ours along with us. There are not many hotels that I have stayed in which are top class and accomodate children so warmly without taking away the upmarket atmosphere.

Our room was Smogen. A few steps away from the main building and in a converted barn. It was beautifully decorated and we could not fault it in any way (apart from our neighbors in the adjoing half who were not at all considerate and continued to have noisy conversations and slam the door outside our room).
We were welcomed with a beautiful array of fresh fruits and chilled champagne.
Unfortunately during our stay there was a problem with the boiler and we didn't have any hot water on the first morning, so I got a lukewarm one and my partner had a swift cold one! However the General Manager was quick to remedy the problem and we returned that day to find another chilled bottle of champage and note of apology - he also automatically deducted a sum of money off our bill.

The reception staff were very professional and made it possible for us to view some of the family accommodation (for when we return with the kids).

Gumstall - the food was ok, it didn't blow us away on our first evening. I had duck (a bit dry) in a very very sweet sauce. I think the more pub grub on the menu (fish & chips) rather than the gastropub food was better.

The Conservatory - breakfast was served here and it was all very lovely. A good selection.
In the evening it was delightful, we took drinks beforehand then enjoyed a most wonderful meal. The waiter was so helpful and friendly and actually new what he was talking about. The wine was wonderful - we couldn't fault it. Book beforehand - it was full!

We then went to the one of the lounges with a roaring fire and had coffee. It really is a lovely set-up, very warm and relaxing, especially as it rained all weekend!

The Spa - the girls on reception need to improve. The first day I didn't get slippers, which is strange as the changing rooms are downstairs, you have to walk through a seating area (where you can also eat/drink) up wooden stairs to the beauty rooms. I had an aromotherapy massage which was amazing, but I was covered in oils which I had to walk through the corridors, down the stairs....a bit slippery...
The second day we didn't even get anything given to us. I had to ask for a robe, towel and slippers! Not at all professional.

Indoor pool lovely and outdoor pool for the summer months in charming setting.

Overall this hotel is well run and welcoming. We really enjoyed our stay.
