My girlfriend and I just came back from a week at Gecko Rock- feeling very relaxed! The resort is located in the small town of Santa Elena, in between the slightly larger towns of Puerto Escondido and Huatulco. The resort is very clean and modern, and the beaches are pristine and beautiful!

Mike and Aileen are very gracious hosts who have created a great product for those looking to get away from it all and relax. On vacations I usually hop city to city, with my nose in a guidebook. This is the first vacation I've been on where I was in the pool with my nose in a book most of the time.

Definitely take time to learn and play Kubb; it's a fun and highly addictive variant of bocce ball.

The food here is absolutely superb. We ate breakfast lunch and dinner here every day, each freshly prepared. Aileen also uses some of the time she spent in Asia to give some of the dishes a delicious twist. My favorite was the chipotle pork!

Traveler's Tip: Don't overload yourself with activities before you arrive; you'll end up canceling a bunch to hang around the resort and relax!

Very Peaceful location with nothing to do but savor Aileen's food and Mike's hospitality. These two aim to please! My husband and I, in our 60's, wanted a place to get away from it all and spent 5 nights with Mike and Aileen. The first day I had 3 naps! We are vegans and Aileen made the most incredible food for us..all with such fresh vegetables/fruits, hand made moleta's, a mexican dish, desserts and aqua fresco's. 3 times a day! Smoothies and fresh fruit juices hand made were included as well. We were in heaven. Take a walk early morning to see birds if you are a bird lover. Mike and Aileen will get you anything you want and make you feel at home. The views of the ocean from the roof are nice especially at sunset. We walked to the beach each day and enjoyed a long walk along the beach early morning or late afternoon. It is the Pacific ocean and known for a surfers paradise along that coast..which means unless you are a strong swimmer…you would need a surfboard. We never went to the main town as there was no need to leave Gecko Rock so we did not see surfers. The stretch of beach at Gecko Rock is deserted, which we appreciated. We used the pool several times a day. It is a good size, lovely and fresh. The grounds at gecko Rock are very special, gorgeous gardens with impressive rocks. It looks just the pictures. We came to relax, eat good food and made new friends. We have been in touch since and remember fondly our time at Gecko Rock.

Room Tip: We had the front casita but any one of the casitas would do. Views are from the rooftops of each bu...

We totally love that you enjoyed your stay and thank you so much for your review. Aileen really enjoyed preparing your vegan meals. It has opened our eyes to a great and healthy way to eat that we can now offer as an option to our future guests. We were super impressed by how often you two took walks in the area to make the most of all the amazing wildlife there is immediately around Gecko Rock. Thanks again for choosing us. Till next time.

Gecko Rock is a great place to come to escape from it all and find some peace and quiet. The rooms are all handsomely appointed with comfy king-size beds, beautifully hand-tiled (by owner, Aileen) bathrooms and relaxing roof decks with beach chairs and cotton hammocks. The pool deck and palapa are also wonderfully warm and inviting.

Down by the water, a short walk along a path adjacent to the property, the beach is virtually deserted. You may see a few people fishing if you head toward the small Mexican town of Agua Blanca where there is a surf hotel and some local restaurants, but otherwise you have the pristine sand completely to yourself. It almost feels like you have stumbled upon some secret slice of paradise that no one else has yet discovered.

Mike and Aileen are wonderful and gracious hosts always looking after their guests' every need. All the meals cooked and prepared by Aileen were fresh, delicious and filling. I loved the fruit smoothies that accompanied nearly every meal. During the day, Mike helped arrange for me to go on various excursions -- SCUBA diving in nearby Puerto Escondido, on a boat ride in a nature preserve lagoon, to a sea turtle center in Mazunte, horseback riding on the beach. However, if you're feeling a little less adventurous there are still plenty of ways to occupy your free time right there at the hotel.

This small, intimate resort is a great place to have a restful and relaxing vacation while still being able to explore all that the majestic Oaxacan coastline has to offer. You won't go wrong with booking a retreat with Mike and Aileen at Gecko Rock.

Note: The resort does not have a fitness center (aside from the pool where you can do short laps), but when I accidentally clicked on that category it wouldn't give me option of deleting the rating. That said, I had a great time going running every day on the beach. Right before sunset was the absolute perfect time to go for a run.

Although Cliché, this phrase comes to mind again and again, even though I’ve been back at work for 2 weeks. My partner and I spent 5 nights at Gecko Rock in December and found that it lived up to previous reviews and certainly exceeded our expectations. The room was clean and comfortable, the view from the rooftop deck was nothing short of amazing, and every meal was delicious. As others have mentioned, the resort is somewhat secluded down a long dirt road about 30 minutes south of Puerto Escondido. Since we did not rent a car, we were a bit concerned that we’d have enough to do for our stay. Turns out we had nothing to worry about. A taxi into Puerto was inexpensive and easy to get. We also took ½ day hikes up and down the beach. The town of Agua Blanca is about a 15 minute walk down the beach from the resort where we enjoyed a seafood lunch. But most of the time we just sat by the pool and enjoyed the tranquil surroundings.

Alieen and Mike were excellent hosts. You can tell they have put their heart and soul into the resort and wouldn’t rest until all of the guests were taken care of. It’s worth repeating that the food was magnificent! Aileen is an excellent cook and was very attentive to our dietary needs. She also made homemade Dulche de Leche for me after she realized my obsession with it while traveling in Latin American countries. It’s the little details like this that made the trip well worth the journey and certainly a good value for the cost!

We visited as a small family in celebration of a birthday. We were looking for an all inclusive on the beach with a pool however small and intimate hence Gecko Rock. Only 4 sparkling clean rooms each with a comfortable king sized bed, cascading shower heads and individual rooftop terraces complete with a hammock, chairs and a table. Perfect sunrise, sunset and ocean views.

The communication from the very first email throughout our stay was accommodating and clear. Mike and Aileen were interested in food preferences and diet restrictions to coordinate meals with special requests. A perfect family style birthday dinner and cake were so lovingly prepared. The pool is beautiful and ready for hrs of floating about. The beach is lovely, quiet and great for long walks. The water is a bit on the rougher side and many smaller bays great for swimming are within a drive away as well as a variety of other adventures and magical nature gems if you feel to explore the area.

As hosts Mike and Aileen are extremely dedicated to being in service. They are a small team available to support you in your needs. Their priority is the comfort and joy of each guest.

We were looking for a warm December getaway, as a 30 something couple that aren't into the party scene of the built up tourist areas. What we found was an Oasis of beautiful scenery, friendly hotel owners, and meals that were absolutely perfect. Anyone who is looking for similar will find a perfect vacation.

Just one tip, road conditions in Mexico are poor, this hotel like many in the area, is located along a dirt beach road, we recommend renting an SUV or Jeep in general for traveling the area. You can also take a taxi to the resort for a relatively minimal expense.

Thank you Mike and Aileen, we wish you the best and hope to visit again.

We were staying in Oaxaca City and were confounded by some unusually bad weather, so on the spur of the moment we decided to fly down to the coast and try to just chill out. We decided to take a chance on this little spot, and I'm glad we did.

Mike and Aileen have made it their mission to provide a haven that is far from the crazy crowds. Their resort is about 45 minutes from Puerto Escondido, so if you're looking for nightlife and restaurants, this isn't your place. But if you want a quiet spot with a lovely pool, comfortable room, and ocean breezes, you could do far worse than Gecko Rock. In fact, I think a sensible vacation would be to spend a few days in town, with the hubbub and vendors and restaurants, and then a few days here, to really get away from it all.

The resort currently has only four rooms, and when we stayed there we had it all to ourselves. It is far from the main highway, down a long dirt road, so it is very quiet. The beach is about 200 yards down a private path. Both days that we walked down to the beach, the nearest person we could see was at least a mile away. The beach is broad and sandy and beautiful. The surf was strong, with no lifeguards, but not too strong to keep us from getting wet.

The room's bed was particularly firm and comfortable - definitely a high end mattress. There was no TV, but the wifi signal was good throughout the resort (but not fast - this is rural Mexico, after all!). The

Aileen is an excellent cook and we enjoyed everything we ate, with fresh local ingredients, but not strictly Mexican cuisine! On the day of departure we had an early flight and they packed us a breakfast to take with us, which was much appreciated. Mike mixes up a fantastic passion fruit martini, and also brought us Cuba libres (rum and Coke with lime) on the roof deck as we enjoyed the sunset.

The peace and remoteness of this spot would make it great for a family or group of friends to rent several rooms together. We appreciated how our hosts went out of their way to be sure that we were comfortable.
