“The jewel of Ixtapa!”
Reviewed 2 June 2011

We just got back from our 5 night stay at Capella Ixtapa. We choose this resort because it was featured in Conde Nast magazines hotels around the world with the sexiest pool views. We stayed here for our 10 yr anniversary and this resort exceeded our expectations.

A few things to know about the resort: Upgrade to a deluxe suite where the private plunge pool is in the sun. Our room was up on the higher floors with a terrific view. The bed was comfortable the pillows soft and the air conditioner keeps you cool at night. Everyday at 5 pm happy hour is delivered to your room! Friday night is manager’s night and you get free drinks and a continuous flow of appetizers. Monday night is all you can eat Tacos by the pool. Tequila tasting every night in the library. The rustic outdoor seafood restaurant, Las Rocas, below the pool, which also hugs the cliff, allows you to choose your dinner from a display of local catch of the day. This is a 4-course meal and you will not be disappointed.

Getting Around: We rented a car, for the same price as transportation from the airport. We could explore at our leisure. We drove to the beach, the artesian markets for souvenirs, the store for snacks and we were able to enjoy some of the local restaurants. I would high recommend a romantic sunset dinner at Villa De La Selva, the waiter was attentive and the food was delicious. And for a very affordable dinner under the stars we ate Italian food at Che Mangiano in the Marina. The food was hand made and just melts in your mouth, yummy it was sooo good!

The hotel is truly a jewel. The staff makes you feel right at home. Christian the personal assistant will help you with anything you need, Victor the server at the terrace bar makes sure your drink is never empty and Miguel the bartender will go out of his way to please you. Excellent customer service will make this a vacation you’ll never forget. Thank you for making our 10-year anniversary a memorable one.

We just got back from a week's long stay at Capella, and couldn't have been more pleased. It exceeded all of our expectations. The room/plunge pool was incredible (we hardly left the room our first couple days), the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and willing to do anything to make our stay enjoyable, and the property was jaw-dropping gorgeous. We have nothing critical to say, except that we were sad to leave. I recommend this to anyone, and take the margarita making class! We had a blast!!!

One thing to note. We had read in other reviews that the plunge pools had too much chlorine. This problem must have been fixed, because the chlorine levels were just fine!

There is nothing I can add that has not already been written but to say GO!!!

This resort is amazing but it's the attentiveness and warmth of the staff that make you feel so special and cared for.

All of us who participate on Trip Advisor have had the good fortune to travel the world and experience the best. Well, place Capella Ixtapa at the top of your list and experience another level.

The Capella Ixtapa is a fantastic place for a quiet, romantic getaway. From the picturesque setting, to the sophisticated architecture and attentive service, it is hard to imagine a better spot to reconnect with your significant other. Though relatively small (59 suites), this hotel has all the features one would associate with a larger resort hotel, such as multiple pools and dining options, spa, well-appointed fitness room, etc.

Facilities aside, it is in the individual suites that the Capella Ixtapa really shines. Unlike some other Mexican resort hotels I have stayed at, the beds here are super comfortable. The bathrooms are huge, with luxurious showers. Lighting is controlled by a very high-tech (maybe too much so) remote control device, and the rooms have complimentary soft drinks, cold water, milk, etc. In-room coffee brewing is done with a french press, and with the organic coffee provided, you can make some darned good coffee in your room. Not that you need to, as room-service here is very good too. But the best feature of our room was the generous (and private) outdoor living area with a large day-bed and plunge pool. I suggest splurging on the deluxe suite, as it has a bigger uncovered outdoor space, which my wife really liked for private sun-bathing.

The hotel has a few bikes available for use by guests which we rode through the nature preserve near the hotel and to nearby Playa Linda. We also spent part of a day wandering around Zihuatanejo and doing our souvenir shopping. Thursday is Posole day in Zihuatanejo, so by all means make a point of eating Posole while you are there. But mostly we hung around the grounds of the hotel, as our primary objective was to relax.

If you are looking for a place with an active night life, this may not be best choice. Likewise, this is definitely not a good place to bring kids. But if your goal is to have a romantic getaway, Capella Ixtapa is a very good option.

Room Tip: Go with the deluxe suite!

this is by far the most amazing place I've ever stayed! I'm sure my wife will write a review as well because we were both in shock from the moment we got here at how amazingly beautiful and well maintained this place is. the rooms, the view, the serenity, the people. It was our first anniversary and we had the most incredible time. our concierge was always available. Victor in the bar always made us feel welcome and always had a huge smile on his face. he was a blast to talk to had tremendous insight about the local food and sights. the food was always great and fresh and size appropriated. and our room and the view....well what can someone say. You have to see it. We will definitely be back. I highly highly highly recommend Capella!!!!

Room Tip: get the deluxe room with the exposed plunge pool

I'm writing this review literally from inside my plunge pool, overlooking the infinity pool, restaurant below, and the ocean beyond. Oh how we are going to miss those two rocks that are a beacon of serenity (you'll know what I mean once you get here).

My husband (of one week!) and I don't "do nothing" very well. We usually spend our vacations skiing, surfing, snorkeling, golfing, etc., so I was nervous that we'd want to jump out of our skins after 5 nights here. Oh how wrong I was! We have two more hours here and I swear I could stay here indefinitely. Sure, we'd miss our friends, but we'd make new ones!

We played scrabble with another couple here, and they spent their last night on the phone with airlines extending their trip. Last night at the tequila tasting, we met another couple who were on the Internet extending *their* trips. So many people doing the same thing doesn't lie. Come here. You will want to extend your trip too!

Things we loved.
- we called down for more water and ice on our 1st and 2nd days, and the 3rd day on the cleaning staff left 4 liters of water and a cooler of ice, unprompted
- the fish market, just below the plunge pool. Getting dessert there on the 3rd night made us wonder "why have we not eaten here every night?!" Trust me, skip the tapas and the super fancy restaurant (unless you don't get a lot of "gourmet" food at home) and eat on the railing at the fish market. The staff is incredible, and the fish is SO fresh! We went to the Villa de la Jungle (not sure the Spanish word) last night for the view and ended up sending back some terribly metallic tuna and rushed back here for a second dinner. This is way better!
- agree with most of the other reviewers, a couples massage in the outside room is SO essential. The male masseuse is one of the best I ever had!
- sorry to Capella for this one, but I'd highly recommend going to the big supermarket in town and buying rum, tequila, beer, etc. We made up the $100 we spent on booze on our 1st day here, and never had to leave our room!
- swim with the dolphins (they will arrange for you).
- don't go into town. It's touristy and depressing. Instead, go to the market where the water taxi to rhe island leaves from. It's the same stuff, AND there are seafood stalls where you can get raw bar! We spent $17 for 2 beers, a dozen oysters, 6 scallops (they call them clams, but ask for only the "centro" and you will get buttery scallops), and ceviche.
- definitely splurge for the deluxe suite. We spent probably 2 hours in the cabanas, 2 hours at the spa, and 5 hours in the library playing cards and tasting tequilla, but the rest of the time we stayed in our room. Even after our spa teatments we rushed back because - with the plunge pool and couch on the deck, the room is like your own private spa!

We absolutely love it here and will be back!!!

We booked this hotel on a whim because of a great deal on jetsetter.com and could not have had a better experience. Ixtapa/Zihanejo as a whole was a fabulous place to visit. The people were nice and helpful despite some language barriers. The Capella was the quietest most romantic hotel I have ever been too. I have traveled the world and stayed at The Ritz, Four Seasons, Excelsior and others of the same level. We never heard the other guests and occasionally saw them by the pool or in the tapas bar. Our favorite thing was the happy hour guacomole/salsa, fresh chips and iced beer in our room. The views were breath taking and the sound of the ocean can be heard from every spot. I would recommend splurging on the Deluxe Suite as the plunge pool is not completely covered and gets sunshine which is helpful if you want to get in it and not freeze in the water. The food was wonderful and priced in the range you would expect for a 5 star luxury resort. Christain our personal assistant made great recommendations for places in town when we went shopping. He recommend the Fat Mermaid in Ziahnejo as those were the best Fish Tacos ever. The Villa De Selva was wonderful for our last night with a sunset dinner on the terrace with ocean views. Capella made reservations for us and arranged for the cab anytime we needed one. The Spa was top notch and I highly recommend a Aloe Sun Wrap at the end of your trip if you are a bit burned from all the relaxing by the pool. We also took a day out in the Pacific with Juan (Jaopnese of the boat Duceasa) Morning Sport Fishing and Swimming/Snorkeling at Ixtapa Island in the afernoon where we had our catch cooked for lunch. It was a great day and I would do again. Overall I have nothing negative to say about Capella and we will return another time as well as check out the other Capella properties. One thing to consider is do not bring travelers checks as no one would cash them. Best to exchange American Dollars at the Airport Money Exchange for a good rate or at the hotel upon arrival. We did not have a chance to take any of the classes while we were there but def. plan to do so on our next trip especially the Mexican cooking class and the Margarita class and the Tequila Tasting class. The Basil Margaritas were wonderful....Seriously nothing was a disappointment. If you are a person who likes lots of music and loud people and intermingling of guest this might not be for you. If you are traveling with children this is probably not the place for you. This resort is a tranquil place for those who want to escape and feel like they are the only people on that magical cliff. Very much a honeymooner, anniversary escape to peace and quiet.
