“Stunning Property”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

The physical location of this property is gorgeous. The hotel is perched atop oceanside cliffs, with panoramic views of the sea from all common areas and nearly ever single room, including the bathrooms! My husband and I stayed in a room in the Cocotales wing and my mom stayed in a room right across the way, so we were able to see two different room types, both of which were very deluxe. Our room had a shaded plunge pool, a king sized bed, a walk in closet/bathroom area and separate toilet and shower area. My mom's room had a larger private pool in the sun, and a larger guest room, closet, bathroom area. Navigating around the property can be a bit tricky until you get the hang of where everything is located. There is a funicular that takes you up and down, but not all floors connect across the property, so navigation from our room to the lobby or restaurant took some getting used to. The spa was really pretty but completely empty while we were there. Upon our arrival, our bed was made up with beautiful fresh flowers spelling "Bienvenidos" and a tray of dried fruit and bottled water were waiting for us. The mini bar is stocked daily with bottled water, juices and soft drinks and they're all complimentary which is a really nice touch - especially for Americans who are weary of drinking non-bottled beverages. Food options at the hotel are tasty but quite expensive. We ate everything offered and had no tummy trouble at all! Everything feels very clean and fresh. The hotel offers beach cruisers, which we took down the road one afternoon because we were urged to check out Isla Ixtapa. In our opinion, this tour is totally unnecessary and a waste of time and money. Stay on the property at Capella for peace of mind, stellar scenery and relaxation. The staff is all very gracious and helpful and make you feel at home!

Our goal for our 10th anniversary was utter relaxation. Is there a word more definitive than utter? This place is beyond amazing. We've traveled to much of Mexico and the Caribbean and stayed at several "5 star" hotels in the States and none compare to Capella Ixtapa. In order of how my mind works:

Communication-I was in contact with Margarita and Andres (the personal assistants) several times from booking to the week prior to arrival. Their responses were always prompt and informative with exactly the information I needed to make our stay perfect including arranging an anniversary dinner with menu prior to our arrival.

Transportation-We did the suburban to and from the resort. It is a bit pricey, but the rep was right there after we cleared immigration and we were on our way within 5 minutes completely stress free. It was also stress free (if not just a bit sad) when we returned to the airport. We also had a very pleasant cab ride into Zihuatenejo with Chef Miguel for our cooking class with him.

Room- We had a capella deluxe oceanfront junior suite (#62). As you enter the room, you are greeted with the view from your front porch with plunge pool down to the Pacific waves crashing onto rocks below with the resort spread below you. Utterly amazing. We never tired of hanging over the plunge pool with drink in hand and absorbing that view and that sound. The main room was decorated with roses, a native flower decoration of a heart with butterflies on the bed and balloons. We also had a bottle of champagne chilled for us on arrival (as well as a small bottle of Don Julio 1942). None of that was requested, just arranged by Margarita and Andres. The room has a king sized bed that was quite comfortable. 2 nice sitting chairs, fridge with water and soft drinks and a large flat screen TV on a wall mounted swivel. The bed faces the sliding glass doors so you can stare at the ocean from the bed. A/C kept it nice and cool along with a nice, quiet ceiling fan. The bathroom is all stone and marble with a ton of storage and safe. Double sinks. Separate toilet room and shower with half windows made of wood/shuttered that can be opened to look out onto the ocean while showering or...well, you know.

Food- Breakfasts on our plan were included. Daily it consists of a huge fresh fruit plate with granola and honey drizzled over it, 2 eggs any style, refried bean in a crispy tostada and grilled veggies as well as toast, coffee or tea and juice of choice. You could also have a different choice including pastry basket and granola with the fruit plate. So fresh and filling. I believe you can sub for their other breakfasts, but when I perused the menu, our choice gave us everything I would have wanted for breakfast. Lunches by the pool or in the poolside restaurant were equally tasty and filling. Try the Capella burger. Trust me. We did dinner twice at A Mares. Air conditioned. Gourmet prix fixe menu with 4 choices for cold app, warm app, main course and dessert each. They were all so good. Nothing but the freshest ingredients treated with respect. The talent of the chefs is clear in their preparations and use of ingredients. The bread, oh my, the bread-so fresh and tasty! We also did dinner twice at the Seafood Market. It is just below the main pool, open air and right above the crashing waves. You pick you seafood (ex-shrimp, fillets of snapper, ronco, sea bass, lobster or whatever the fishermen brought in that day) and its preparation (3 choices) and your sides. It is then prepared right there on the deck and brought to you after an arranged appetizer for the day. We ate once in the terrace bar-tapas and such. Also quite good. Large appetizers both hot and cold with a large variety to choose from.
As I mentioned, we did have a dinner arranged prior to our stay on a private deck even closer to the water. Rose petals led us to the table. Candles lit all over. Our waiter was dedicated to us only. We were the only ones on the deck. The food was exquisite and the service was impeccable. It was as romantic as you can imagine.
On our last night, we were asked by Chef Rurik and Julian if we would be interested in a private dinner of the chef's making. We would have no idea of the menu-completely up to him. We agreed and were so happy to have done so. The dinner was 6+ courses. Each was introduced by the chef. We felt like Andrew Zimmern tasting exotic foods or simple foods prepared exotically, depending on the course. Head and shoulders the greatest meal we have ever experienced.

Experiences-We did a cooking class with Sous Chef Miguel that included a trip to the Zihuatenejo market where we picked our peppers, fruits and fish for 2 ceviches and 2 salsas we would make with him. Quite an experience. He is one of the friendliest people we have ever met. So informative as well. He is very dedicated to his craft and taught us some very simple ways to create some amazing food. We had a blast. She did a spa experience that she thoroughly enjoyed-a wrap with a massage of 80 minutes length. At the same time, I got to to a tequila tasting with Fernando, one of the food and beverage managers. He gave a fine history of how tequila came into being and then allowed us to taste 6 different tequilas with background into how they were made and kept us engaged by asking us what we tasted. He killed us at the end by giving us a mezcal to taste-yikes!

The staff-We have the utmost respect for all the staff, from the waiters to the housekeepers, to the managers. They all work LONG days-some 18+ hours. An example as to how invested they are into making your stay magical: by the third day, our waiters at breakfast and the pool knew I did not drink coffee and knew our room number. Same for the bartenders and waiters at the bar. Also, once they noticed we were drinking Pacifico by the pool, it became the beer that showed up in our room at 5:00 with the daily chips and salsa/guac. We have to personally recognize Margarita and Andres for making the arrangements stress free and for always going the extra mile to make sure we had everything we wanted. We would also like to thank Julian and Fernando for their constant concern to making sure our food and drink experience was what we wanted. Finally, thanks to Chef Miguel and the Chef Rurik for their tireless work into making this place a true gourmet lover's heaven.

There are other little secrets/treats that the staff provide, but I'll leave that for you to experience. I don't want to spoil all the surprises!!!

Room Tip: The higher you are, the better the view!

This is by far the best hotel in Ixtapa for couples. The hotel is very intimate with less than 60 rooms, each with fantastic views and its own pool.

The quality of the room is very high and the size is just about right, with a very big wardroom and bathroom combined. There's no air conditioning in the bathroom so it does get a bit hot at times. I really like the ample spaces for suitcases and clothes.

The downside of the room is the stone floor which might not appear to be as clean as say timber or marble floors. Also the day bed on the balcony is very difficult to keep clean and collects debris during the day. So we ended up moving a chair from inside the room to outside to sit, there's only one chair otuside normally.

Do note that as the hotel is situation on a cliff, at night there is a low background noise of waves crashing against the rocks, even if you close all doors and windows. This could be very harmonise for some people, but may cause light sleepers some inconveniences. We didn't find any problems though we did wake up once or twice during the night.

On the service side, there's really nothing to fault the staff. We went at a low season and there seems to be more staff than guests which meant you get a lot of attention from everyone. We didn't make any special requests or met any difficulties that may have challenged the staff.

From the food point of view, we tried the Rockus restaurant on the first night and passed on the Fish Market and Mares on the subsequent nights and opted for room service. Note that not all restaurants are open every night so you will need to plan your restaurant visits if you want to try them all. The quality of the food is good, but the same dish varies day to day and not always consistent.

We had American breakfast included in our package, but the staff were very accomodating and allowed us to swap for other items on the menu, should you get bored of the same items very morning.

In term of prices, the room service menu is very reasonable in pricing and on par with any 4-star hotel in a major financial hub, e.g. London, New York, Shanghai. In my opinion, it was perfectly reasonable as long as you only drink moderate alcohol, but that is the same in all restaurants. I certainly was not shocked at any of the prices.

The most expensive restaurant is the Mexican Mares restaurant with a 4 course fixed menu at 79 USD/person.

For the 3 nights we were there, we never left the hotel and was happily relaxed in our room and the pool.

On the transportation side, we took a shared shuttle from the airport at 135 peso/person paid by credit card. Just buy a ticket at the taxis desk on the right of the exit door. A private taxi is about 450 pesos/car. On the return, the hotel called a taxi for us and we paid the taxi directly for 350 pesos.

For those that need to stay connected, Internet connection is average, but can be unstable at times. For some reason, the speed was faster at the library, could be coincidental.

Overall, I found the property perfect for the purpose, which is a totally relaxing holiday.

What an amazing hotel. The rooms are large, comfortable, and you are pampered from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave.
Let me first say that I was unfortunate enough to go there the weekend the tropical storm Manuel hit the Pacific coast of Mexico. It literally rained nonstop every moment of our stay, very disappointing. Needless to say, it's nobody's fault. Despite the harsh rains and floods, the hotel staff dealt with it the best they could. It's hard running a hotel when you have Mother Nature's wrath. Yet, they tried to make everybody's stay as pleasant as possible despite the lack of sun and drenched public areas. Every single employee went out of their way to accommodate the guests and make them as happy as possible. This was noticed and greatly appreciated; thanks Capella staff.
The bathrooms are very functional, big and don't have A/C, which didn't bother me at all because when you are wet from the pool or the shower, the temp is just right.
Margarita is an angel sent from heaven. What a nice and generous woman. So nice to talk to and she is genuinely happy to help out. We appreciate all her effort and for organizing all our activities. Fernando, the tequila sommelier, is also super nice and we enjoyed our tequila tasting!
The food is really good in every restaurant, and you will pay generously for it... If you order cocktails or alcoholic drinks, the bill adds up very QUICKLY. Keep this in mind.
Gorgeous spa, too. I had an amazing massage, well worth it.
Loved Capella, and I hope I return someday, hopefully without a massive tropical storm next time. :)

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe rooms and ask for the fourth floor. They have the infinity pool and more outdoor s...

Where do I even begin....This place is amazing. The views, the staff, the food, the rooms and ammenities were all 5star. From the moment we arrived till the time we left, we were made to feel like we were a part of a family. The friendlyness and knowledge of the staff made us feel right at home. This resort is all about the views of pacific ocean that you get to see every morning from your room. It is an extremely romantic place and perfect for couples. I can also see coming here with my girlfriends for a relaxing girls weekend. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for superb service like no other. If you are struggling with a decision to book it....Go for it, you WILL NOT be dissapointed.

I am a very fussy traveler, and must have the "best" room in the "best" hotel. It's why I choose destinations and hotels. (Annoying right? Try traveling with me). Point is, we really liked this place...really, really liked this place. The view is so unsurpassed, the typical details that bug me rolled right off my shoulders. (Again, that's saying A LOT).

We traveled in early August, Room 42. We splurged on the "private suburban," which helped my husband feel safer driving thru a new City. Easy airport pick-up, I recommend it.

The front desk staff & valet attendants were so cool. Always willing to chit-chat and give travel tips. The wait staff of mostly young men were such nice guys, we started feeling "weird' asking them to bring us stuff. The hotel has such a bed & breakfast/boutique feel, it felt like a private luxury home at times.

In early August the hotel was 40% full. Traveling Tuesday-Saturday means a lot of photos with nobody but you in them. Main pools to yourself. Only couple in the Terrace Bar. Last ones to leave the A Mares 4-course restaurant.

I had two spa appointments, while my husband enjoyed a class with Chef Miguel. Same fantastic experience as others, shop, learn, cook, eat...ridiculously amazing experience. My husband was even able to take me back into the Zihuatanejo Marketplace like he was a local. If you're a foodie, do this.

We used the Meal Plan for one day. $110 each allowed us to splurge on breakfast, enjoy a hearty pool-side lunch, and order to our hearts content at the Fish Market. A glass of wine each and I'm certain we came out ahead.

We never turned on the TV, but the phone addiction continued. Wi-fi was always up. We checked out the library a few times (okay every afternoon for complementary cookies). The library also has morning pastries. Even with lowballing the breakfast & snack budget, we spent more money here than at any other hotel. (Also, saying a lot). Infinity pool, spa appointments, chef experience, unsurpassed food, yummy drinks...hard earned dollars well spent. We'd do it all again in a heartbeat.

So why Capella over everybody else, anywhere else?
Serene and spectacular infinity views of the ocean, rocks, beach.
Infinity pool in your room.
Two large infinity hotel pools. Most days with just us in them.
Stepping into pools with bathwater temperatures.
Clean beach & rocks to explore.
Healthy delicious filling meals.
Unique Fish Market dining experience.
Complementary home-made chips, salsa, guac, and beer. DAILY.
Cuban cigars.
Being lulled to sleep by a mariachi serenata who played for a nearby guest.

Go. Book today. Go tomorrow. Just go.

Room Tip: Rooms with view of main the pool are more private. Rooms on smaller-pool side can be seen from the T...
