We took a bus from our hotel in Ixtapa ( 9 pesos ), caught the water taxis at Playa Linda ( 20 pesos ) on a Saturday with the expectation that it would be crowded but it wasn't. This time of year is low season so we were pleasantly surprised . Since we didn't want to go snorkeling we stayed at the first beach the water taxi stopped at. We sat down at Lili Cipriani restaurant 15' from the water and enjoyed some cervecas and appetizers. The beach behind us was only about 2 minutes away (great for snorkeling) but we just wanted to swim and this was the best place. Beer was 25 pesos but their margarita prices were steep (120 pesos). They had some margaritas that were poured into pineapples or coconuts that looked wonderful for 150 pesos so maybe the prices weren't all that bad because they looked huge. Our waiter was named Erick and he was very friendly and helpful. For a long time we were the only gringos on the beach but everyone there was so friendly they made us feel right at home.

Watch the people that sell you beer. They also charge you for their service and then expect a tip. The snorkelling on the island is very good.

We paid $38 each to be driven and then via boat from Zihuatenejo to the island. A rather small lunch and one drink was included at Ciprianis. They were so disorganized we had to fetch our own drinks and got crowded out of our spot we paid for. It was hot, crowded and uncomfortable. The reef is pretty much overused and trashed, although there were a few nice fish. A waste of a nce day.

You must be there before 10 before the tours arrive. I have heard people say that the water gets churned up by all the people in the water but I think it is really just from the waves. We were there on a very quiet day and we found it much easier to see when we went in at 9:30 then when we went in a few hours later. You don't need a tour. Take the bus and then the water ferry from the wharf at Playa Linda. Bring snorkel gear from home. I don't bother with the flippers any more.
