This was my first Club Med experience. Prior to that we had gone for many years to Hawaii. The 4.5 stars that the other Tripadvisor members gave this place are right on target.

Resort. It's a large resort; you can walk around without running into crowds of people. The resort is beautiful. Immaculately kept. Very tropical.

Rooms. We stayed in a club room. It's basically two spacious rooms with a large shared bathroom. We paid extra for an ocean view room (about $70/night extra) and it was absolutely worth it. One of the best ocean views I've ever experienced.

Food. There're two restaurants. One - the main one - is a buffet. The other is a sit down restaurant that requires reservations. We ate there only once. The rest of the time (breakfast/lunch/dinner) we ate at the main restaurant. Yes - it's a buffet. But it's on par with the top Las Vegas buffets. The food was delicious and the variety was superb.

The beach. Perfect in every way! Just what you imagine a tropical paradise would be. Much better than the beaches in Cancun; and IMO better than the Kaanapali beach in Maui. The beach is situated between two coves and feels very private.

Activities. There's something to do every minute of the day.

Helpful hint - there's a massage spa at the end of the beach. It's not a part of the club med property. They charge $40 for an hour massage, less than half of what club med spa charges. I would go every day.

Room Tip: If you can get an ocean view room - well worth the added price

We paid 640 dollars as an add on for the petit club for a week. Upon arrival we discovered you can pay for the club by the day for a rate of 1088 pesos approx 83 dollars. By that math we paid for almost eight days childcare. Considering you don't use the club the day of check in or the day of check out we paid for almost three extra days. On top of that our usually easygoing child did not at all take to the club. He protested going so much that we ended up only sending him four days. Nowhere on the website does it say that you can pay by the day for the club . It seems so dishonest and I am disgusted by it. I will never use another club med. I plan on trying to get a refund for the unused days, however I don't hold out much hope according to reviews of terrible customer service. I plan on updating tripadvisor regularly so that nobody else falls for the trap of pre paying for the petit club.

I had not been to a Club Med for 30 years but now I have a family and it was time to check it out. Overall the trip was great. We were met at the airport and wisked to the resort in a high speed taxi. When we arrived at the resort we were personally showed to our room by a GO (Club Med Hosts). The room was a lot bigger than we expected and had a great layout. There are two AC units that can be switched off at night if you need complete silence. The TV's worked well and no problems with changing channels etc...

There is NO free wifi and it's about $50 for the week. I think this is a rip off! Also, you have to keep signing into the wifi all week and it's hard to have multiple devices connected at once. There has to be a better solution from an IT perspective.

Lots of activities for everyone to do, including the kids. We had our 3 and 6 year old along with us and they went to the kids camp everyday. They have a very organized schedule. I normally went to tennis lessons every morning at 930 and then hit for another hour. I then participated in the noon water polo/water basketball, or water football game. Soccer was everyday at 5PM with a good turnout. The GO's are very helpful and try to have a good time with everyone.

The food is good quality and there is a good variety. It actually gets a little tired some of eating three full meals a day. Make sure if you eat outside you have bug spray. This is a must! On Thursday night they close down the soccer field and setup tables for an outdoor dining experience (this was a highlight). It is very awesome! There is a lot of work that goes into this and it's nice if you have a white outfit to attend.

Do you need a massage? Resort massage $80-100, on the beach in a hut $45 (I did this and everything was safe and fine), and over on the island $20.

The grounds are well maintained but I think that there could be more preventative maintenance on things like sink drains, balcony railings, bathroom fixture, pool tile and grout work, etc... Labour is so cheap in Mexico that things could have been better in this area. Staff are extremely responsive to your needs.

I would highly recommend this trip for a family. Things to bring; lots of sunscreen, bug spray, water shoes (the sand gets very hot), a good change of clothing everyday, or twice a day (it's very humid and nothing completely dries), and if your into sports bring the appropriate gear.

Second visit to Club Med Ixtapa, with 9 and 11 year old daughters. Weather was perfectly predictable, hot, sunny, blue sky. Beach is large, uncrowded. Our daughters couldn't have had a better time, esp. the older one who had some independence with her 11-13 yr group. The facilitator was exactly what this age group needed, my daughter loved being in the variety show, the nighttime trapeeze show, and having the option of going to the beach w friends rather than just being told to follow a schedule. My nine year old was a bit shy, she joined her group for circus and a few other activities but enjoying hanging out with us. We did the horse riding excursion and the kids were able to canter on a deserted beach (with rope reins!), for snorkelling, we just walked to Playa Linda pier and took the ferry, hired snorkel gear at Coral Beach-cheap and snorkelling was better than expected! Food, updated rooms and entertainment much better quality than our last visit 8 yrs ago. Loved: kayaking out to watch the pelicans dive for fish, seeing the smiles on my kids faces every day, sunshine, great staff. Gripes: rooms have no balcony, impossible to book a sit-down meal at the specialty restaurant. However, we aren't at Club Med for the rooms, we are there for pretty much super fun summer camp w beach & cocktails. My kids cant wait to go back!!

We just returned from Ixtapa with our kids 21/2 and 4 1/2 and had an amazing time. The beach is beautiful and the ocean is so warm, such a great place to swim! The pool is also very nice and we loved the shallow pool for the kids and the big pool for everyone. Plenty of chairs and palapas to go around. The food was really tasty with something for every palate and the Mexican fare was outstanding. Great vibe with friendly staff and GOs. Kids camp was really nice and easy and we especially loved Elie Boom Boom, Capt. Chicken Nugget, Fer, Genessee, and Morgane. All so very friendly and good with the kids. Idyllic location for all things including the fitness classes in the palapa overlooking the ocean. I could have stayed another week!!
The rooms are fine, not luxurious but certainly suitable (we had a family club room which was perfect). Though there is a night time group babysitting option i.e. "pj club" for the kids, we usually went back to the room with them and put them down around 8pm. No DVD players and very limited watching options in the rooms as an fyi.
Loved Club Med Ixtapa!!
