“Peaceful beyond belief”
Reviewed 25 March 2013

Booked the all-inclusive plan through Orbitz. It was very warm (almost 90F) and humid beyond belief BUT the room a/c worked just fine, day and night. The location could not have been better, literally next to the beach. From the outdoor bar one only had to go down four (4) steps and you were between palapas on the beach. Wading out a ways you finally got ocean water above your ankles. The food was very good, at least two entrees each mean and plenty of variety with side dishes and salad bar. Especially liked the beer (Model clara and negra) ON TAP. This is an older hotel but changes and updating have been made. We experienced only one toilet problem but a call to the front desk brought swift (for Mexico) response. Front desk staff and the bartenders spoke fine English. Ixtapa-Zihuat is not an exciting place so if that is what you want, travel elsewhere. There are a few tourist things to do and there is fishing. Bring 2-3 novels with you to lounge by the pool (natural solar heated) or under a palapa. Like MacArthur, "I shall return" but I will not let three years go by. For rest and relaxation, this is a good place to visit.

Room Tip: Get a room with ocean view and balcony/terrace.

We stayed at this hotel from 03/03/13 to 03/10/13. We had booked a Deluxe Ocean View room and AI thru funjet.
We were in room #611. We did not have a coffee/tea maker, iron, ironing board or alarm clock which was advertised for this type of room. There was a refridgerator which was stocked, but locked. Unlock it and you are charged. There was a leak by the bathroom from the air conditioner. You needed to put a towel on the floor to avoid falling. There was a lot of mold in the room on the ceiling. The good thing was that the bed was comfortable.
All Inclusive:
Advertised:
Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Nothing advertised about having to pay for a la carte.
"Discover Ixtapa" Dine out program. When we requested the coupon, we were told this had been discontinued. This is still advertised.
1 Bottle of water in the room per person (stocked daily). This happened 1 day. I called the front desk on the other days and received 1 bottle for 2 people.
Room Service 7 AM to 11 PM It is not advertised you have to pay for this.
Bogarts - Excellent.
When I talked to rep about these problems he had me talk to a manager. Her response was I am sorry. I asked her since nothing would change and if I vacationed here next year and booked AI I should stay somewhere else the reply was SI.
Buffet in AM Excellent. Other wise food was cold and not good. We ate out.
Wait staff is very hard working and friendly.

Room Tip: Check the room before accepting it.

We have just returned from our annual Ixtapa vacation. This year we decided to stay at the Krystal because we were given the option of not going all inclusive. A few things that should be known before booking:

1. VERY IMPORTANT: This hotel does not exchange money! Any of the other hotels that we have stayed at in Ixtapa change at the front desk....Krystal does not. If I had known that, I would have gotten pesos from my bank here in US or at an ATM. Also, they tell you that you can exchange money at the bank...WRONG. You need to go across the street to Intercam Financial Services which is at the end of the alleyway past Gloria y Inferno. Bring your passport and they will exchange at the highest exchange rate available. (we got 12 pesos to $1 USD)

2. There are no activities for children at this hotel. Other hotels have Activity Centers for the children and special daily events. I did see a few hotel staff playing a game or two of volley ball on the beach two out of the seven days we were there and then they disappeared.

3. WIFI - You may be able to access in the lobby area...sometimes. Very hard in the room even though they have a few networks that you should be able to connect to.

4. Food - The best meal is breakfast in the lobby. There is a buffet and a la carte service for lunch near the beach but the food is mediocre to awful. You'll find many good restaurants across the street...La Malinche was one of our favorites.

5. Beach Club - these are the palapas on the beach. It was not very busy when we were there so we had our pick of spaces. No need to get up at dawn to grab one. You must really check the lounge chairs though as most are broken. Also, they serve drinks on the beach but no food. You must go to the restaurants.

6. Lobby - Needs some sprucing up and maybe some type of background music when you enter. It's very dark and uninviting. The lobby staff sat at their desks and rarely interacted with people.

Ixtapa/Zihua is a wonderful, relaxing place to regain your sanity in today's environment. It is the total antithesis of Cancun...which is a good thing...and we have been going there for years but we're not sure about next year. If we go back, we may have to choose an AI and then go outside anyway since this is fast becoming the only option.

This is not a new hotel, it was built in 1980 and is in need of renovation. I've stayed in one of the junior suites, which will cost you about $70 USD mora than the standard room but will give you the space and the view you need. All the rooms have a waterfront view, which is cute but not the best in Mexico. Ixtapa is not Los Cabos, Cancun, Acapulco, Huatulco or Puerto Escondido. It's a small and quiet little town for the traveller that is looking to relax. The hotel is located within walking distance from stores, banks, many restaurants and a few clubs, so everything is close and convenient. The hotel staff is friendly, but very slow. The food is average for those of you that enjoy great gastronomy, but venture yourself to the town and eat tacos, the place by the burger place is very good. There is not that much to do around here so bring a book!

Room Tip: If you are going to stay in this hotel, get the junior suites on levels 8 and up. Otherwise, go to t...

Hotel is nice. View from room was awesome. Food was not the best. We always go all inclusive and this was the first time ever that we've had to pay for a bottle of water!! When we were there in Feb 2013, we noticed that most people did not do all inclusive. Ixtapa does have a lot of good places to eat and most people may have known that. Two wonderful restaurants were Villa de la Selva and Momma Norma and Deborah's. The swimming pools are very nice. No swim up bar tho. But staff was always making sure you had a drink and it isn't far to walk to the bar area! Very friendly staff.

We booked our vacation through Funjet. The Krystal was advertised as being all-inclusive. It is not. There were extra charges everywhere.

The snack bar by the pool offered hamburgers that looked like hockey pucks, hot dogs and fries. One day they had fish tacos, that I had heard were really good. When I asked for one, they asked to see my bracelet and then told me I would have to pay $13.00. They advertise 5 restaurants. There were two. Bogarts is in front of the hotel. We were allowed to go there 2 nights and had to eat at either 6pm or 9 pm. There were two other eating areas on the property that served the same thing everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food was cold and very limited choices. We ended going across the street 3 nights to get something decent to eat.

There was a locked refrigerator in our room. We had to give them a credit card to get it unlocked and then pay for anything we took out of it when we checked out. We had a coffee pot in our room, but no coffee. We had to repeatedly call the front desk for coffee packets and then did not get them on some days.

There were no activities or entertainment of any kind, except for one day. They had water aerobics one day and they had some dancers one night. They were at only 34 percent capacity, but yet, it was very difficult to get an umbrella by the pool. It was obvious that the people who were not wearing any bracelet (probably inclusive people) were getting preferential treatment over the rest of us. Chairs, umbrellas, etc. we're being moved around as early as 4:30am.

My husband and I had an ocean front Junior Suite that was wonderful. The friends that were with us had a standard room that they were not happy with at all. They had problems with the shower and the room hadn't been updated in years.

We have been to Ixtapa on many other vacations but this was our first AND LAST stay at the Krystal!!

My third trip to Ixtapa, and my former hotel has gone all-inclusive, so preferring to take most meals in town, I tried the Krystal. It suited me just fine.
Ixtapa is, still, a less glitzy, more down-home alternative to the faster pace found in Acapulco, PV, Cancun, etc. During the week, at least during winter months, Ixtapa hotels are filled mainly with American and Canadian visitors, often from the Midwest; the nearest airport, Zihuatanejo, has direct flights from Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, even Calgary. On weekends, Mexican families drive over from the interior, and the hotels become melting pots . . . a good way to practice your Spanish!
Ixtapa has an excellent 3 km. beach, good restaurants, inviting shops, a little nightlife, and hotels with blue swimming pools and palapas anchored in the sand, facing the sunset. I like it there!
The Krystal Hotel is not deluxe, but it provides what it's supposed to: A clean room in which to rest your head and let the surf-sound lull you to sleep; a roomy pool with plenty of lounge chairs and a beverage bar; beachfront location; friendly staff; easy access to various beach activities (parasail, jet ski, massage tents, volleyball, jogging or strolling on the sand); on-site restaurants (try the dazzling Bogart's if you want to splurge); and walking proximity to the shops and restaurants in town. Our room showed a little wear, but was well within expectations.
In a more prosaic location, the Krystal might rate three stars; due to its beachfront location in marvelous Ixtapa, I give it four.
