2 wks Christmas vac great!!. All staff friendly, warm and most spoke much more English than we did Spanish. If not happy with your rm ask to be moved (No issues getting moved to a king and reserving a king near us for family arriving later in the wk). 6th flr rm was very clean, spacious with a breathtaking ocean view. A/C was pure heaven in the +30 heat. TV remote controls and safety deposit boxes were available at the front desk. Pools were busy but clean. Never had an issue getting beach towels. More lounge chairs please! The buffet was standard, some days better than others-Christmas and New Years dinner buffets were delicious. The cafe served al a carte lunch-very good!! and we had wonderful dinners at the HACIENDA, again al a carte. Too bad this restaurant patio isn't open through the week, even for drinks-its street side and much quieter than ocean side. This is a very comfortable 3 star (as advertised) Mexican resort! Just what our family expected.

Room Tip: Request 5th or higher flr ocean view

I stayed at Fontan Ixtapa Beach and Hotel resort from December 22 2013 to January 5 2013 this is my own honest opinion of my stay there. Lets start with the positives overall the staff are great polite, friendly especially the Bartenders, servers and hostesses at the restaraunts plus the animation staff as well but there's one or two porter/bellboys who are money hungry, have bad manners and plenty of attitude to go along with it. The cleaning staff do a good job of keeping your room looking tidy and the Front Desk is very fast, efficient and courteous so no complaints there either. There is also free WIFI in the Front desk/Lobby area which is always crowded around with people with their Tablets,Laptops and smartphones at all hours of the day.The New Years Eve party that The Fontan Hotel put together with fireworks and meal was excellent
On Trip link e.t.c.Air Canada vacation states that you have a safe in your room this is wrong it's down in the Front Desk area.I have no problem with the honesty of the Front Desk staff but this situation made me and other guests from across Canada i spoke to feel uneasy i'm used to having a digital safe in my room with own pin for it i don't even mind paying a few Dollars a day just to have this piece of mind.AC also stated that you have a mini fridge in your room this will only happen if you pay $50 plus Dollars a day for a suite upgrade to a higher level penthouse so more misinformation. One of my Air Canada reps Eduardo Fernandez told me on January 2 2013 that there was an Air Canada Hospitality suite or room that was part of your all inclusive package at The Fontan where you could store your bags and have a shower before you were picked up to be taken to the airport for the flight home.I asked him about this on the last day he gave me a puzzled look and said there was no such thing..can i trust any information give to me by Air Canada online or a local employee representing them down there? I don't blame the Fontan hotel for any of these problems they aren't the ones who are giving the information i think Air Canada has a bit of catching up to do with Air Transit/Nolitours in terms of level of service.I was in room 321 on the third floor diagonally across from the Palapa with all the bashing and noise at all hours of the night i was lucky to get 3 hours sleep a night if you're on that side regardless of the level asked to be moved to another part of the hotel. The Hacienda Ala Cart is very good some is the food at The Miramar Restaraunt but the Palapa is the same recycled food at the buffet everyday they should maybe consider switching up what they offer in terms of menu there now and again it wouldn't hurt.
The entertainment was dancers every night they were excellent but even in Cuba where they love dancing they have Magic acts,Live bands e.t.c. a little variety goes a long way.The swimming pools aren't very clean and one of them has a old water fountain that doesn't work children e.t.c. dive off this trust me when i say someone will eventually get seriously injured by one of those big concrete steps. While we are on liability issues why isn't the pool are closed down between 5-6 PM while it's still daylight? The area is open until it's 8 PM and dark out with no floodlights this in my opinion is very dangerous and risky.
The loungers and deck chairs around the swimming pool are always breaking on guests and are of poor quality the worst of any resort that i've visited in the last few years.Let me state right now that this is a basic Mexican Hotel that offers few extras yes to some this is fine but when i've stayed at hotels in Cuba with a mini fridge stocked with soda, water and beer every day and a electronic safe way more swimming pools for far less money..where would you go?
I don't expect a 3* to be a 4.5-5* but for $2400 for two weeks i expect one or two things to be a bit better i don't want perfection just be a little bit more professional that's all aren't Mexican Hotels the bench mark that Cuban Hotels aspire to get to? I like most things about this hotel but that doesn't mean there isn't a little room for improvement if you wanting more folk to stay at your resort regardless of where they are traveling from.

Front desk: RUDE staff, i got there at 11am since my flight got there at 10:30am, they first didn't want to give me access to the room but after some arguments i got the room, they told me that i couldn't eat anything (i went with all inclusive plan) for the moment, if i wanted something they would charge me for it, they told me just after 1pm i could have the bracelet in order to get the "benefits" of the all inclusive plan. Also, i went there by myself since my partner was going to arrive the following day and we were going to switch to another hotel; i asked the front desk lady if he could get there at 9am the following day and just spend 2 hours there, just around the pool and she told me it was impossible, i would have to pay about 70 USD just for him to be 2 hours there with no access to my room!!

Rooms: REALLY REALLY poor, unconfortable bed, bad tv signal, poor "ocean view". The room's bathroom was really bad, it smelled like chlorine all day, ew, the WC water was kinda brownish...bad impression. In the shower it was some kind of courtain that if you opened it, everyone could see you from the pool, LOL. What's with that?

Pools: They were ok, some rust here and there but nice pools overall.

Food: The worst ever, if you stay here please DO NOT ask for the all inclusive plan, really really bad food and the worst drinks ever; not even the beer was ok. Really rude waiters, this waiter even told me i couldn't seat in a table that i was already sitted in, since it was reserved, of course i didn't listen to him and continued there since the restaurant is reservations free. They make no effort at all to please customers needs.

Location: Good location, just outside the hotel you can get on the bus to go to Zihuatanejo and other beaches. Also some nice restaurants near.

We stayed for the week of Feb 17-24 2013. We first of all upgraded our room to a suite which was great! They have a loft upstairs with another full washroom which was so ideal for my husband and I trying to get ready to go out in the evenings. Honestly I had never heard of Ixtapa before we pulled it up and saw the cost of it on Aircanada Vacations...1 week all inclusive from Whitehorse Yukon Territory Canada $1250.00 per person. Cheap Cheap Cheap (we pay $600.00 from Whitehorse to Calgary AB just so we can catch a flight out of the country) Ixtapa is absoloutly gorgeous and not completely commercialized is what I liked the most about it. Staying at the Fontan we were close to all the shops and if our feet were sore one day and we wanted to get to the other end of the strip we jumped on a bus which run every couple minutes or atleast it seemed that way. The buses I will admit were flippin crazy but we arrived everywhere safe for a fee of about 7 pesos (0.70 cents) . The beach in front of the Fontan is beautiful and they have parasailing along the beach which we all did for another meesly $30 US. After a couple tequilas its not even scary just rather a beautiful peaceful sightseeing tour in the clouds..lol. I read quite a few reviews in here and I was alittle worried but we didnt go expecting a 5 star, but we did get that for service most definately. We had brought toys and small gifts from the dollar store for our chambermaid and to distribute to the small children in Zihuatanejo. It was life altering let me tell you, lots of poverty in Zihuatanejo. Those kids face lit up like you wouldnt believe, it was amazing. We did a few tours such as the town tour of Zihuatanejo and visited the museums and a brick making factory in the countryside. We also went to swim with the dolphins and that was pretty amazing seeing none of us had done that before. Ixtapa Island was something we decided to do on our last full day and WOW we wished we had done it at the beginning because we would have liked to go back again. When you get to the beach that you catch the boat to Ixtapa Island there are tonnes of crocodiles and iguanas in an enclosure . You catch a water taxi over to the island. We treated ourselves to couples massage for another whooping $20 US Each and did some snorkeling. Get there early cause it fills up by about 11am. I loved this hotel because quite honestly the price we paid for our whole trip (1250 each) it was like we got the hotel and food free so we had breakfast and lunch at the hotel and ventured out and tried dinner at all the restaurants. So cheap for meals compared to what we pay up here in the great north. Already going to rebook for next February but this time 2 weeks!!!

PS - dont get cocky with the bar tenders because our hubbies did one night and they added a little extra to our hubbies drinks, which they called Mexican brandy and we ended up almost taking them to the hospital (absoloutly drugged and puking for hours) be careful. When we go back we will buy our own Vodka at duty free so we ensure this never happens again. We didnt let this ruin our trip or our view on the hotel itself but please do be careful.

Oh Yah one last thing...the fishing was amazing, this is me with my sailfish on the boat "The bloody hook"

Room Tip: Higher up gets you better views, palm trees block the lower rooms view. Suite was very nice size!!!

Stayed March 24 - March 31, 2013. Just got back yesterday. This is NOT even a 3 star resort.
The room - A/C did not work, beds were hard, toilet flushed when it wanted to, toilet shaked when you sat on it, tv had 2 english channels & no remote, terrace barely fit 2 plastic chairs on it, no safe in room, other couples room had cockroaches. The food - TERRIBLE. Exact same thing EVERYDAY! Never seen one shrimp the entire time, chicken, pork or beef and always cooked the same way. Only two types of fruit eveyerday papaya or pineapple. Ala carte was a joke, 5 entrees to choose from, caesar salad consisted of ONE leaf of romaine lettuce with dressing. Servers and housekeeping were fantastic though ecspexcially Alberto!! Front desk not friendly at all. Drinks were so so, asked for a bahama mama several days and they only had 1/2 a banana one day to make ONE drink. Our kids were never asked to participate in any of the kids games, all the Mexican kids were chosen. Swam in pool ONCE because it was too overcrowded. If you are not on the beach before 8 am don't expect a lounge chair or an umbrella! We figured it was not going to be a 5 star but we were expecting a little bit more of a variety in the meals and a room that was a little better than what it was. The only good thing about this place is the servers other than that spend the extra little bit of money and stay somewhere else!

Room Tip: Unless you want to sweat and sleep with cockroaches stay somewhere else!
