We spent two perfect weeks at this wonderful hotel in April and it was everything we could possibly have hoped for and more. After a two hour flight delay, an eleven hour flight, and the long transfer journey, we arrived to a very warm, friendly welcome, and following cocktails and snacks, were speedily taken to our beautiful swim-up suite. Due to the flight delay, by the time we arrived it was dark, which was disappointing, but we were so delighted the next morning to find we had arrived in a little piece of paradise. The gardens are stunning, beautifully landscaped and we were fascinated by the amazing tropical bird sounds, and by the many iguanas.
The staff at this resort are remarkable, welcoming, cheerful, friendly and helpful. The food in all of the five restaurants is really good, always beautifully presented and with outstanding waiter service. I read in some previous reviews that it was felt that the wine quality had gone down, but I think the resort must have taken note of this, because the house red is now a very drinkable Tempranillo, and the white and rosé were very pleasant too. We used room service a few times, (no extra charge), there is an on-screen menu and your order is with you within 30 minutes. This was very handy when we had a trip with an early start, and also for a couple of lunches, and again, the food quality and service is really impressive.
Our swim-up suite was lovely with a huge comfortable bed and a great jacuzzi, and all kept beautifully clean by Antonia, who also left us some amazing towel art every day
We didn’t go to all of the evening shows as we tended to eat quite late, but those we did see were very good. Our particular favourites were the Mayan evening (wonderful costumes) and the Reggae Beach Party which was great fun.
The sea is so very shallow, clear and warm and you only have to wade out a couple of feet to be surrounded by shoals of fish. Take some bread in with you and feed them, it’s lovely!
Because this resort is relatively small, there is no need for those very unattractive bangles that have to be worn at many all inclusive resorts, which I was really pleased about. AI bangles are never a good look!
Just a few tips that might be useful:
I am always very fussy about taking my own (dual voltage) hair dryer and it worked perfectly well, but the hairdryer in the bathroom was so good and had such a powerful setting, that I didn’t bother using mine after the first couple of days.
I always take a small travel iron away with me, but there is an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe, so this is not necessary.
The toiletries in the bathroom are of really good quality (shower gel, body lotion, shampoo and conditioner), so you might want to save a bit of your precious weight allowance by using those instead of bringing your own.
Mosquitoes: We did get some bites – not sure if they were mozzies though, as mozzie bites are usually very itchy, and although these bites caused redness and swelling they were not particularly itchy. We used Deet spray in St Lucia a couple of years back, disgusting stuff, terrible smell and so strong it melted my nail polish! I couldn’t bring myself to use that again, so we bought some bright yellow citronella bangles from our Rep. We saw quite a few people wearing them and though they might work for some people, we found them pretty useless and gave up wearing them after a few days.
Trips: We went to Chichen Itza on a trip we booked at the V-Aquatic water sports centre, which we found to be cheaper than booking with our First Choice rep. Although it’s quite a long day, it’s a great trip, and well worth doing.
Collectivos: minibuses offering a great way of getting around, frequent and cheap. We went to Tulum, another really good place to visit, it is a very short distance away, and can be easily reached on the collectivo for 30 pesos (approx. £1.50). We also went to Playa del Carmen on the collectivo, interesting, but made us appreciate the peace and tranquillity of the EDSS!
Tipping: When we organised our holiday currency, we arranged to have lots of 20 peso notes, so that we had plenty with us when we arrived. Please do tip the wonderful staff, it really is appreciated.
Our time at this resort was absolutely wonderful and unforgettable. The setting of the resort is just beautiful and the ambiance of the resort is so friendly and welcoming thanks to the truly amazing staff. This has to be one of the best, if not THE best holiday ever!
