“A wonderful, unforgettable holiday!”
Reviewed 14 May 2012

We spent two perfect weeks at this wonderful hotel in April and it was everything we could possibly have hoped for and more. After a two hour flight delay, an eleven hour flight, and the long transfer journey, we arrived to a very warm, friendly welcome, and following cocktails and snacks, were speedily taken to our beautiful swim-up suite. Due to the flight delay, by the time we arrived it was dark, which was disappointing, but we were so delighted the next morning to find we had arrived in a little piece of paradise. The gardens are stunning, beautifully landscaped and we were fascinated by the amazing tropical bird sounds, and by the many iguanas.

The staff at this resort are remarkable, welcoming, cheerful, friendly and helpful. The food in all of the five restaurants is really good, always beautifully presented and with outstanding waiter service. I read in some previous reviews that it was felt that the wine quality had gone down, but I think the resort must have taken note of this, because the house red is now a very drinkable Tempranillo, and the white and rosé were very pleasant too. We used room service a few times, (no extra charge), there is an on-screen menu and your order is with you within 30 minutes. This was very handy when we had a trip with an early start, and also for a couple of lunches, and again, the food quality and service is really impressive.

Our swim-up suite was lovely with a huge comfortable bed and a great jacuzzi, and all kept beautifully clean by Antonia, who also left us some amazing towel art every day

We didn’t go to all of the evening shows as we tended to eat quite late, but those we did see were very good. Our particular favourites were the Mayan evening (wonderful costumes) and the Reggae Beach Party which was great fun.

The sea is so very shallow, clear and warm and you only have to wade out a couple of feet to be surrounded by shoals of fish. Take some bread in with you and feed them, it’s lovely!

Because this resort is relatively small, there is no need for those very unattractive bangles that have to be worn at many all inclusive resorts, which I was really pleased about. AI bangles are never a good look!

Just a few tips that might be useful:

I am always very fussy about taking my own (dual voltage) hair dryer and it worked perfectly well, but the hairdryer in the bathroom was so good and had such a powerful setting, that I didn’t bother using mine after the first couple of days.

I always take a small travel iron away with me, but there is an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe, so this is not necessary.

The toiletries in the bathroom are of really good quality (shower gel, body lotion, shampoo and conditioner), so you might want to save a bit of your precious weight allowance by using those instead of bringing your own.

Mosquitoes: We did get some bites – not sure if they were mozzies though, as mozzie bites are usually very itchy, and although these bites caused redness and swelling they were not particularly itchy. We used Deet spray in St Lucia a couple of years back, disgusting stuff, terrible smell and so strong it melted my nail polish! I couldn’t bring myself to use that again, so we bought some bright yellow citronella bangles from our Rep. We saw quite a few people wearing them and though they might work for some people, we found them pretty useless and gave up wearing them after a few days.

Trips: We went to Chichen Itza on a trip we booked at the V-Aquatic water sports centre, which we found to be cheaper than booking with our First Choice rep. Although it’s quite a long day, it’s a great trip, and well worth doing.

Collectivos: minibuses offering a great way of getting around, frequent and cheap. We went to Tulum, another really good place to visit, it is a very short distance away, and can be easily reached on the collectivo for 30 pesos (approx. £1.50). We also went to Playa del Carmen on the collectivo, interesting, but made us appreciate the peace and tranquillity of the EDSS!

Tipping: When we organised our holiday currency, we arranged to have lots of 20 peso notes, so that we had plenty with us when we arrived. Please do tip the wonderful staff, it really is appreciated.

Our time at this resort was absolutely wonderful and unforgettable. The setting of the resort is just beautiful and the ambiance of the resort is so friendly and welcoming thanks to the truly amazing staff. This has to be one of the best, if not THE best holiday ever!

After a fantastic vacation at EDSS last spring we returned this year and stayed from April 7 - 14. The resort is as peaceful and relaxing as we remembered and the service is better than ever. Once again they were able to accommodate our specific room request on very short notice. They have added a new spa and made some changes to the dining options that include the Sandwicherie, which now serves mainly burgers and pizza for lunch (both excellent), and a new beach BBQ (also excellent). The tequila tasting was a great opportunity to try some of Mexico’s finest and the nightly trivia at Guacamayas Bar was a fun way to get to know some of the other guests. We ate dinners at all the restaurants and once again found some menu items to be hit or miss. Sea kayaking or snorkeling right off the beach is a great way to start the day. We saw a manta ray and the big (~5’) resident barracuda this time. If you want a better chance of seeing some of the more uncommon wildlife head down to the beach a little early. Watching the pelicans fish offshore was fun to watch in the afternoons. We only did one day trip this year and that was taking the collectivo to the public beach at Akumal. 50 pesos for two vs a $20 cab ride one way. The collectivo was safe and efficient means to get around and Akumal is only 15 – 20 minutes away. Once in Akumal you can snorkel off the main beach and you are pretty much guaranteed to see sea turtles! We were there by 9:00am on a weekday and the beach was still empty.
As almost every reviewer before me has mentioned, the service at EDSS is exceptional. They maintain a beautiful resort and attempt to make everyone’s stay truly memorable. Thanks to all the staff for their wonderful service and it was great to see Fernando and Heriberto again! A special thanks to Heriberto for going out of his way to serve us a coconut in the traditional style. Gracias amigo! The fantastic service and beautiful setting at EDSS make us want to come back and we hope to return next year.

I loved everything at this resort. Since you can read lots of great reviews, I'm just going to give you a few tips. Go to dinner early, it can take you around an hour and a half to eat and you don't want to miss the evening shows. There can also sometimes be a wait for a table if you go around 7:45pm. If you want to see the fireshow, it's on the beach so get there before the pre-show activity (Name that tune, trivia etc) is over so you can get front row seats. If you get to the evening show past the start time, you'll have a hard time finding a seat with an unobstructed view. Ask for a lower level suite so you don't have to walk up and down the stairs each time. We stayed in the 1600 block which was great, close to the lobby, lap pool, 3 restaurants and a short walk to the activity pool/beach. Don't be pressured by your Sunwing or any other salesrep. You can buy the same excursion from Lomas Travel in the lobby of the hotel for cheaper. Example, our excursion to Xel-ha was $99 from Sunwing and $89 from Lomas per person. Vida Garden Grill is the BEST for breakfast and quite good for lunch and dinner too. Lastly, when I was checking out, I saw a promotion that allowed people to upgrade to the Hidden Beach Resort for free, it allows you to use both facilities and gets you a $200 USD credit. This is probably a limited time offer so be sure to ask if you're interested. This is the best vacation I've been on hands down, don't have any second thoughts about booking.

Room Tip: 1600 block was convenient to many things in the resort.

Well here i go again ! Been back a week and it's been so hard to get back into our normal routine, First the journey, Flew Thomson premium class not as good as febuary on flight out felt like they couldn't be bothered, return service excellent led by John , Thanks a credit to tui group.
Now the easy part, wow wow wow wow, fantastic reception by the staff, very quick and smooth check in by Camilla, Lovely room in 34 block with a great view of the sea,
Feel very lucky to have been able to come here for a 5th time and the 2nd this year. Even in the absence of 12 weeks so much as changed for the better, tables on the beach for drinks are a nice touch, and a beautiful gazebo , which looks great at nt lit up, Thanks to janet and rest of bar people by block 34 for amazing service,
Food! where do i start , Vida still our all time fav for breakfast, big thanks to Anna, fernando Alcantara, luis, nothing too much trouble, never went at nt, nothing to do with the food ( menu looked great ) just a little dark for us ,
Lunch, bbq on beach was good plenty of good food, excellent service by all staff, loved arrecifes , Ignaccio really looked after us anything we wanted he made sure it was there, grilled fish, chicken , stk , house wines were great and flowed freely!!
Evening, our personal favourites were Klay Talay big thanks to Miguel , the food is always consistantly good and perfect size portions, if only we had this in the uk !!
Arrecifes, fantastico muchos gracias Fabiola you are amazing and a huge credit to karisma hotels so much experince in customer service, you are 1 to watch !! food fabulous , very efficent waiters , and very friendly!!
Big thanks to management team ( you know who i mean ) you made us feel like royalty, it really is down to earth with a bump this week,
One thing i really liked this time was that there wasn't a scramble in mornings for beach beds, you could always get a bed, and plenty of free cabanas further down beach, beach kept really clean and free of sea weed , the guys do a really good job and are always smiling,
went to the spa again and it is just amazing , you really must go i love how tranquil it is and i just feel so relaxed by the time ive even got to the changing rooms, we had Rueben and Juan Carlos for a full body massage, just heavenly, and very discreet they make you feel so special, well done all at Naay spa !
Guacamayas bar we had fab service and always pleasant.
Gardens , again very neat and tidy and colourful, loved all the wildlife in them , especially the iguanas. i could go on all day , once you have been here it raises the bar, and makes going to other all inclusives so much harder, so go on treat yourself you will be amazed.
now just a huge thanks to Paula, Enrique, Lili, Janai, Alex, see you next year , adios amigos

Just got back froma week long trip here yesterday. Soooo many things I don't know where to begin.

This complex is reasonably small so everything is really easy to get to (even though there are golf buggies ready to take you anywhere on site with just a phone call). But as we all know ladies size doesn't really matter! The gardens are beautiful and everything is kept immaculate. We did hear from one couple that they had heard somebody complaining that there were too many trees...is there such a thing??? The hotel is working really hard to be more eco-friendly and to be honest they are doing a really good job.
There are plenty things to keep you occupied through the day if that's what you're into, but if you're anything like us and just like to do pretty much nothing on holiday then this is also the place for you. Everywhere you turn there are loungers, super-king beach beds, hammocks, seats to chill out on in the shade and in the sun.
The food is amazing. Some people on here say it's not true 5 star...well if it's not then it's a pretty good imitation of it that's for sure. Even on a two week stay you wouldn't get sick, the secret is to try different things! I like the a la carte service as I'm not a really big eater so I could enjoy three courses and not be stuffed afterwards. The longest we had to wait was 15 mins for the Italian (this is the moest popular) but the bar is two seconds away so we just went to grab a drink first.
I found beach beautiful, yes there are sand bags but they aren't an eye sore. You aren't allowed over the wall where main the sand bags are so you just move 100m or so down the beach and you can't see them. The service for drinks on the beach can be a bit slow but the waiters/waitresses take loads of orders then bring them all out at once. Anyways' does that really matter you're on holiday so what's the rush. If you get sick of waiting you can use those things called legs and grab you're own, look at the bright side when the waitress gets there you'll have two drinks :-) but honestly the wait wasn't long. The Mojitos are to die for.
The staff deserve A LOT of respect, they work so so hard all day and night. I've never met such friendly people, we got a hello or hola upon passing everyone, no matter how many times a day. Please tip, no one deserves it more than these guys.
This hotel is not voted one of the top 10 most romantic hotels in the world for nothing. It may be 5 star but it's so chilled out you wouldn't believe. If you are undecided on whether to book this trip stop hesitating and just do it! you won't regret it. It's luxury but you don't have to re-mortgage your house to go. The only complaint.......a week wasn't long enough!

My husband and I stayed here May 2-9, 2012. The resort is absolutely beautiful. We booked a "beachfront" room which we got although it's not that you're stepping onto the sand from your patio door. Because of all the gorgeous tropical plants and palm trees I don't think any of them do, so I can live with that! Everyone there was really nice and attentive. We loved laying on the beach bed cabanas looking at the ocean. Estela would bring us cocktails before we even asked. Marcella was the wedding coordinator and she did a wonderful job with my brother and sister in laws wedding, it was like a fairytale. The food was all good. I would suggest if you have a big group (more than four) to make arrangements ahead of time. I would go back. The beds are comfortable but the pillows are VERY thick! So, if you have neck trouble you might want to pack your own pillow.

we have just returned from the seaside suites, we had a seaview junior suite with jacuzi, room was amazing with 4 poster bed and lovely bathroom. spotlessly clean and you can have your mini bar filled to your own tastes. all restaurants where brilliant. the beach is really clean even the seaweed is collected daily. there are numerous seaside bars but you dont need to leave your lounger as the waiters will happily get you whatever drink you want i recommend the seaside margarita.. mmm delish.. we had great weather and the water is like getting into a warm bath. we never used the pools as the beach is so lovely. a must is the trainer for life trip, its $199 but worth every penny, swimming with dolphins, manatees, sharks and stingrays.. fabulous day. also the saan kaan trip to tulun is fabulous, rough jeep ride through the jungle then a boat into open water, we where lucky enough to see dolphins, manatees, turtles and even a croc, you snorkle on a coral reef and then drink tequila in the sea.. wonderful trip and our quide fred from france was amazing. just a small note get plenty of 20 mexican peso notes as tipping is a must, we never tipped at breakfast but for everything else tips are kind of expected but when you see the work the mexicans do its definitely a must. most things are priced in dollars we took pesos and they will do a conversion for you 20 pecos is about a £1.

Room Tip: seaview suites and swim up rooms are best, but all rooms are lovely. if you are going for the seavie...
